i haven't seen the first episode yet.....but played both games....

and my educated guess will be they will end season 1 either right where the first game ends....OR....due to the extreme gut punch the beginning of the second game was....we will end on that note.....

and i say that due to just how long these episodes appear to be and there are 9 of them.....but again there's a lot to cover in the first game and this whole season 1 could end with joel helping ellie escape the cannibals after he gets injured....which that alone would be a hell of a climax cause there's a lot to flesh out here and i sincerely hope they take their time....

edit: keep in mind from the first game, there were 2 sections of DLC that were amazing! one was some of the back story with ellie and her friend when they spend time together in but then get bit in the end....and also the other DLC where it shows more of her trying to help joel with getting medicine in the snow after he's been injured.....just those 2 DLC's alone could be amazing episodes and most assuredly we're going to see them......dangit ive got to get this streaming service......crap.....

id also go ahead and put this out there it's great to see the level of respect from us gamers keeping things under wraps here......same way y'all did such a nice job of keeping things quiet when i was going through the MCU because there are some big time plot points that are gonna rock y'alls world with this story and i can't wait to see some of y'alls reactions to them!

For where this season ends, I believe they have said it goes to the end of the first game.

I work in the games industry, and something publishers like to do with mature rated games is nerf the scariness or level of violence from being too gratuitous so they reach larger audiences. Reminds me of Resident Evil 4 -> 5, when capcom decided to dial down the horror while dialing up action. EA did this as well following Dead Space 1 -> Dead Space 2 & 3.

I don't think HBO will be as willing as Sony was when it comes to telling the story in TLOU2 with all the brutality that comes with it. TLOU2 gets darker and has probably 3x the violence TLOU 1 has.

I selfishly hope I'm wrong and HBO goes all in on TLOU2 when we get there

Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 were both action games with horror elements to begin with (Dead Space was spawned from RE4). If anything RE4 was the departure because it completely changed everything about the series, from the gameplay to the types of enemies. Their sequels leaned heavily into this, not because of expanding the audience, but because they were both such runaway successes.

I also feel like Dead Space 2 in particular doesn't fit. The action is more fluid because of improvements to the combat mechanics (and a much improved zero G experience), but any game that has a scene like this (don't watch if squemish) is certainly not shying away from horror.

And on the Resident Evil side, if anything, RE7 and Village returning to the horror roots of the original three show the exact opposite.

Either way, Last of Us 2 100% did not follow that, and judging by this first episode, the showrunners are showing they want to stay true to the content. And HBO doesn't really shy away from that kind of thing.

Yeah, I mean look how gruesome GOT was in certain aspects, particularly in regards to anything with Ramsay. I would expect anything in TLOU being fair game, as shock value gets more people talking, and I'm assuming the storyline is pretty low on sexual activities.

Sorry for the slight derail, but that Halo show came and went and I never heard a thing about it, even from my gamer friends. For being the first adaptation of such a popular video game franchise, I found that surprising. From what I could tell there was ZERO hype for that thing.

Did anyone actually watch that? I assume it must have sucked since it didn't make the slightest impact as far as I could tell.

And how do they convert a Game into a show?

They have a plot and you have to do what you're supposed to accomplish to move to thd next plot point?

I haven't played a video game since Tiger Woods 2003 and Madden 2003 so forgive me.

i watched it....the reason no one talks about it is because it was Terrible.

Just goes to show how far ahead HBO is in terms of quality.

Just saw a YT video where Druckmann was quoted as saying there are some liberties that have to be taken when doing live action. Like no spores sections and no gas masks in the TV series. I assume it's for the acting side of things similar to how in Top Gun the pilots never had visors down and seldom had the O2 masks on. So that would explain in episode 1 where Tess and Joel see the infected on the wall and didn't really panic or put on mask.

Watching the series with my non-gamer wife is going to be fun. She's all nervous watching and is like "somethings going to happen here, right?" and I'm all...just watch...ready to hand her a tissue!

Spoiler/Game talk

I went back and watched trailers. You can for sure see them in Pittsburgh for first human/human combat. You can see them in what looks like the Rockies so possibly the University or all the way to SLC. You do get a quick glimpse of a fully HAZMAT suit person so maybe the hospital. That would take TLOU series all the way to end of game 1. But the whole game 1 switch from playing as Joel to playing as Ellie during the winter could be several episodes in itself.

I wonder if there will be an inside joke, call out to gamers...for Ellie's inability to swim!

Not at all. I think there might be some deep dives, easter eggs, gamer appreciation call out...but if you just want to watch as a story it will be be clear.

Joel and Ellie are two if the most iconic VG characters of all time. I can't think of another game that builds such a relationship with the characters and tugs on so many heartstrings like TLOU and TLOU2. It really felt like playing a blockbuster movie vs just a shooter/survival game. I put down the controller and/or teared up numerous times playing them.

No. The reason why TLOU lends itself so well to adaptation is that the story is so good. I'm really glad it was turned into a series and not into a movie. There are a lot of memorable characters that come into Joel and Ellie's experience and it really is kind of episodic to a degree. The good thing about it being a series is that the showrunners get to explore some character backgrounds that were only exposited or hinted at in the game because in the end, it was still a combat survival horror game. Remove those video game elements and there should be plenty of time to help non-gamers follow the plotline. They laid out a pretty good bit of foundation this first episode and I think the rest of the 8 episodes will just make this first ep even better once we all get to the finish line.

Same, I've always heard about the game but not a PlayStation user. It was easy to follow, and I actually think it was really straightforward because of the cool little intro with the epidemiologists. It was an interesting dialogue.

To kind of keep the story in context..the first episode was only about the first 20-30 minutes of gameplay from the game. There is A LOT of story left to tell in the next 8 episodes.

Seen several mentions that in the game the fungus is transmitted through the air so they have to wear gas masks. Do they wear gas masks the entire game? Is it a minor plot hole in the show that the old lady was infected through the air, yet the majority of the infections in the show are bites? And they aren't showing gas masks because they don't want the actors to wear gas masks the entire time?

It doesn't affect my enjoyment of the show by any means, simply curious.

The girl who played Sarah was just perfect and had the hardest job in the first episode, make you fall in love with her, and then rip your heart out. For the non-gamers it's not a beat for beat remake, there are changes that were made but they make sense. I thought they amped up the horrific nature of the zombies. I thought they did a good job of showing how bleak the world is, being in a city is effectively being imprisoned. Had a very Soviet feel to it, not hard for the show runner of Chernobyl to pull off.

I'm glad they're really reinforcing how rare and impactful music is. Closing the episode with 'Never Let Me Down Again" was so good, one of my favorite Depeche Mode songs. The game is almost devoid of music so when you hear it, you notice it.

There was a question about whether season one will be the whole first game, I don't think so. The game is too big to do that without sacrificing some of the story IMO. I also think they'll need to add to the story of some of the characters we're going to meet. I think they'll cover about 75-80% of the first game.

I'd say there are hardly any kid actors cast who don't earn theirs roles with legit talent. No one's going to cast a kid actor just because they're so-and-so's kid. They need to be able bring the goods. Where they have an advantage, obviously, is getting the audition in the first place, having grown up on sets, with parents in the industry, etc. I think it's a massive advantage just to be so ingrained in that culture from such a young age, and to see your parents treating it like any other job.

Yeah, I agree. I think it gets them in the door easier, but wouldn't sustain a career if they weren't legitimately talented.

For example, Carpenter said part of the reason he cast JLC in Halloween was because of the connection to Janet Leigh, but that could've easily been a one-and-done (or a short-lived horror career) if other directors didn't cast her in their movies.

Something I'm really curious about for the non-gamers here, or those who haven't played TLOU, is if at any point while this series is running, if it gets you to buy a PS5 and/or the re-release of the game on PS5, PS4, or PC.

The developers behind the game have been working on a large player vs player multiplayer video game set in this universe, seemingly set in the Bay Area that will weave together both new story and multiplayer elements. It is allegedly the most ambitious project they have worked on to date. I wouldn't be surprised if it launches either with a season 2 of this show or at the end of whenever it is that HBO/Sony finish telling the story of TLOU2.

A themed board game has also been released, as has a themed limited edition beer and scotch whiskey.
This franchise is just getting started

We watched last night and had no idea it was a video game until I read this thread this morning. We enjoyed it but yes, the middle got slow but wasn't unbearable. Can't wait for more.

If it was on Xbox and I haven't played it, I for sure would purchase and play. But I'm not about to go buy a PS5 just to play this game.

It doesn't. I don't play games on PC. I don't really play many games on Xbox either.
