Really surprised they spoiled that detail about Ellie in the trailer.

Ehhhh, it's bound to come out pretty early on so why not? It's not a mystery why they're headed west. That's not the point of the story. No sense trying to make it a mystery and change the driving force behind the story. So put it out there now and let people unfamiliar with the story know the stakes.

As for the trailer, I'm now convinced they truly have captured the game. My most anticipated show in a very long time.

Trailer looks incredible.

Question…. as someone who hasn't played the game, and hasn't read this thread yet either, just curious to know if this will be a video game spoiler thread or not?

Do we need two threads? Is the game even "spoilable"?

Sorry if already addressed, I just didn't want to risk being spoiled by reading anything prior to now.

People have been good in this thread about using the spoiler tag. It definitely can be spoiled. Some fairly major early points are revealed in the trailer, but the ending of the first game (assuming they stick with it) is absolutely something you want to experience spoiler-free.

Just like a book or other source material, there are huge plot points and spoilers that already exist - should they follow the original story. And every indication so far looks like they are going to be following it to a tee.

There's a few things that are massive spoilers, and I would hope nobody would throw those out there... but this is the internet. I imagine once the discussion gets going - and if this is as big a hit as it appears it will be - the video game players are going to enjoy dropping that they have played the game and will be making comments that might annoy nonplayers... just like GoT readers would do.

Unlike GoT and those books, this has much less material and is a much more straightforward story... And I don't think it's going to veer very far from the original story like GoT did.

So I dunno, I think two threads is overkill but I could see it being wanted by a lot of people

Ok, thanks, good to know. Personally, I don't mind being spoiled by minor things, but those major story points are ones the rest of us obviously want to avoid. As long as people put anything that hasn't happened yet behind spoiler tags, hopefully we can just keep it to one thread, at least for now, and then just play it by ear. Because this definitely looks to be a huge, event series that will be fun to discuss week to week.

I rewatched the trailer, damn. The main thing that jumps out at me is how much detail they're going into transferring the game into the story. They're not just using the name, they're bringing the whole experience. Even stuff like hiding from the hum-vee while it's driving around. The gold-domed building, the horses and the snow, the sounds the clickers make and their movements. Gives me a lot of confidence they'll nail the claustrophobic feeling and intensity when they're in a building or underground. The creators know what this show is supposed to be, I'm super psyched about this show. And tears will be shed, there's really emotional material, big moments that stick with you.

The game starts off in central TX, I'm curious if they shot any of it there.

I was a HUGE fan of the first game and the sequel was decent….big fans like me will know why we all pretty much got a bad taste in our mouth from the start of the sequel….

But the ending of the first game was definitely unexpected and was an ending that really made you think about what you'd do in that situation….and also have had the experiences that Joel had….

Also….for those that haven't played the game or know the story…..I REALLY hope they capture the….uh…."weight" of how the game starts because…..oh boy that one nailed me….

I have nothing to add other than that trailer just blew my balls off and the A-ha at the end was amazing. I wonder if it was the band doing another rendition or someone else. Anybody know?

It truly is. I'd almost encourage everyone reading this thread that has any time to kill between now and January 15th to at least play Last of Us 1 as fast as you can on beginner mode to get a feel for the scenery, characters, and themes. Then after you conquer it, play the sequel as fast as you can.

It can be done. It's been said many times in this thread that you don't have to know the story line or have played the games to appreciate what's about to be dropped on us but it will make the watching experience that much better.

I do understand not everyone has 35 hours to kill or in my case 300 as it took me to finish.

Go check out https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastOfUs2/. It stemmed off the early rumors and basically turned into a circlejerk about hating the game, even this long after the fact. Not sure if you remember, but it was being review bombed within hours after coming out.

I absolutely loved it myself, and think it sets up well to have a third come full circle on the first. I do hope we don't end up with a GoT situation where the show finishes the story instead of the games.

Three HUNDRED?? What took up that time? I've played both games 3 times each, which equates to about 100 hours total.

all of the aspects that make a game truly incredible were there….the controls, atmosphere, gameplay, immersion, acting, music, tension….all that top notch…..

You know what I'm referring to as far as what happens in the first (taking a guess) 30 minutes of the game….and while I get it was center to the story I equated it to not wanting to watch Terminator: Dark Fate after I watched the first 5 minutes tear my heart out….was just too gut wrenchingand this while not as jarring as that still was too much a bummer to FULLY overcome all the other epicness that game was….

This trend of putting in "epic" versions of old pop songs in every trailer is getting super old.

Just in the last month we've had John Wick 4, Ant-Man, and now this.

First one I remember was Gary Jules's cover of 'Mad World' by TFF used in the Gears of War commercial. It had been featured in Donnie Darko previously.

Mine is probably that awesome version of Blue Monday that Wonder Woman 84 did.

But I think it's WAY overdone at this point. It seems like every single trailer does it now.

Yep, I agree with Sex Panther. TLOU2 is my favorite PlayStation game of all time. It is that good.

I like dark, grisly games and movies, though.

There is not a better high production single player narrative game out there. Nothing else comes close, including the recent God of War games.

Zelda doesn't count, entirely different experience

Pretty cool. Was wondering if that song had any significance, since it otherwise felt somewhat random.

It was just a random number I pulled out of my ass making a joke. It did take me quite awhile on higher difficulty levels though. Some of those clicker battles are so tough to get through.

I did probably spend 300 hours trying to figure out damn puzzles in the Uncharted series though.

I basically went from a PS2 to a PS5 so when I got the PS5 at launch I immediately played all the "classic" PS4 games.

- TLOU 1&2
- God of War
- Uncharted 4
- Horizon
- etc.

TLOU 1&2 are far and away the most amazing story and experience of any games I've played in the last two years. Both masterpieces.

I know TLOU2 gets some criticism, and I'll admit when it switched perspective I didn't like it at first, but I ended up loving it. I thought the other side of the story really played with your emotions and filled out the story. You went from being destroyed by Joel's death to seeing, that on many levels, he was paying a price he earned. The confrontation when Abby finds Ellie was great, you could see both sides of their struggles, anger, fear, etc. I was so engaged and was talking to the screen "No. No. Please don't make me kill Ellie." No other game as made me that emotionally involved.

The only question to me is do I watch the episodes as they air, or do a replay of the games first?

This reminds me of when I first played the original. I had been laid off, but had found a new job that wasn't starting for a week or so, so I picked up Bioshock Infinite and Last of Us (both recently out) and played them back to back. Probably one of the best periods of gaming I've ever had between those two. Still have framed posters for each of them hanging in my home office over my desk.

I would definitely recommend a different thread for show-only discussion. There are or will be plenty of spoilers out there especially once the show gets rolling. I think discussion of game elements will be unavoidable, very much like GOT. Perhaps not always rising to the level of spoilers, but I'm surely plenty of people will want to discuss the show just based on the show without comparisons to the game
