I think Mahershala Ali is pretty deep into pre-production on Blade right now. He just helped bring in the writer for it so a script should be coming soon.

Seems to be a decent casting choice on paper. Will withhold any further judgement until I see her on screen.

I'm curious how well she can pull off the snark Ellie has. Her character in GoT was fairly dry.

Ewww. I've already seen his fake southern acting style in kingsmen. Not interested in that one.

I feel like the ones there were meant to be a bit on the exaggerated side. Guess we'll see. Of course, I feel like just about anyone they casted would have a hard time beating Troy Baker's drawl from the games.

I was hoping that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau would be cast as Joel, but I'm good with Pedro Pascal. Ironically Joel is really close in character to Mando, both of them are tasked with keeping a kid out of danger on a long journey.

They don't have to keep Joel being from Texas, it's such a small part of the story that it's a non-issue if they wanted to have him be from somewhere else. He doesn't have to do a fake southern accent.

I just finished The Last of Us Part II a few weeks ago, easily the most emotional video game experience I've ever gone through between the two games, nothing else like it. Anyone with a PS4 should get both games, really enjoyable.

More importantly, who's gonna play Tommy? That one HAS to be a native Texan, right?

Joel's brother.

Real question in my mind is who plays David.

Sorry, thought you were responding to the post right above you about Tommy. The picture is Robert, the guy Marlene originally wanted to smuggle Ellie until Joel and Tess got involved...

That's Robert. Early levels of TLOU1. Tess and Joel (pre-Ellie) had to get their guns from him. The character model for Robert was literally Sir Bronn of the Blackwater since HBO seems to be casting everyone from GOT.

Never had a PS4 so once my boys unwrapped their PS5 Christmas morning my first priority after platinuming Miles Morales and Astros Playroom was to tackle Last Of Us & part II.

Absolutely the most emotionally involved I've been in a game series. Wow. So beautifully written and done. It makes me a little on the fence about a series though, because how could they improve on that? Hell, how could they even match it? I'll still watch but I'm a little wary. Cherynobl and HBO combo has me with some faith though.

I just finished Part II a couple nights ago so my thoughts:

I think anyone who has any issue with the lesbian or trans angles in the game is just searching for something to complain about. They were natural and simply part of the story. They weren't shoved in anybody's face. I think they were great examples of what LGBTQ inclusion shoots for, to just be characters in a story, to not have their queerness necessarily BE the story.

When it switched to Abby my initial thought was "Wait. It looks like there are pills and tools and upgrade paths. Does that mean I have to plan as this girl for a long time? No!" But I quickly got engrossed in her story. It did a great job of showing that both sides were the same, yet enemies. The climax of hunting down Ellie was so tense and emotional. You got to know Abby but still, Ellie's my OG, I didn't want to kill her!

I will say that not sing Return Of The King has there been more endings/not endings. I thought the farm would be the ending, with the setup for Part 3 being Ellie hunting down Abby. Then it switched back to Abby and I thought once she got captured would be the end, setting up the pony tailed guy as the baddie for Part 3. Then again it switched back to Abby. I kept thinking I was almost done and it kept going.

At first I didn't like Ellie going after her. I mean she spared your life TWICE Ellie, what are you going for??? But the climax I think was a good one. Ellie needed to end it on HER terms. She had zero control in the first encounter, and in the second she got her ass kicked. She didn't need to actually kill her, but she needed to know she could. That she was in control and it was her choice that Abby live.

Yes Part II was bleak as hell, but I would say overall was a better game in a lot of ways. Either way both masterpieces. What a story and what execution!

Summed up my thoughts about part 2 as well. I've never played any games like these. I just finished playing Uncharted 4 last week, it's fun, but not engrossing like TLOU.

I was so worked up after being forced to play as Abby that I almost quit the game. That's how vested I was in Joel and Ellie. I enjoyed the Ellie gameplay more than Abby, but still appreciated the Abby story. I still didn't get vested in her though, Joel killed her dad because he was going to kill Ellie. Ellie basically became his daughter, there was no way he was going to let her die without a fight. I could have done without Joel being beaten to death, I was pretty upset after that. Had a similar feeling when Negan beat Glen to death, and I quit that show not long afterward. However after seeing what condition Abby was in when Ellie found her on the beach, it was obvious she had been through absolute hell, I pitied her.

I have high hopes for the series with all the parties they have involved. I really just hope I get a part 3 to the video game series. Whether it's more of Ellie's story, or a completely new character, I just want more of that world.

Ellen Page was a shoe-in for Ellie - I think she even considered suing naughty dog for ripping off her likeness? - but that casting... well, it ran into a snag.

The most prestigious cable network, responsible for many of the greatest all-time shows, has re-teamed with the writer/creator of the phenomenal, Emmy-award-winning Chernobyl miniseries, for their first-ever video game adaption, enlisting a fantastic cast in the process, yet your enthusiasm is "basement level" because the actors don't look exactly like their video game counterparts? Seriously?

I'm definitely concerned about this given the game director's involvement and how he moved the story forward in the game's sequel once he got full creative control. Will be interested to see how it turns out but have reservations.

Excellent write up. Thanks for putting into words what I couldn't quite do myself.

I enjoyed 2 more than 1, which I think then elevates 1. Just both, so so solid.

I have a little bit of "what could the show do better than the game?" but I'll probably be there on day 1 just the same.

There was oversight on TLOU. He had full creative control of the sequel. Druckmann did not lead development of the first game.

The other director was in charge of things like gameplay. Druckmann was in charge of the creative direction, including the lone writing credit. The narrative side of Last of Us is 100% his brainchild

Straley was the overall game director, full stop. Druckmann was writer that reported to straley. Feel free to look up the credits.

I did. Druckmann was credited as Creative Director in addition to writer. It would also take only a quick search to show that they were co-leads on the project, as is indicated in pretty much every interview about it.

I also have the benefit of over a decade in the games industry, and can explain to you that a Game Director, while having input, is very much going to defer to the Creative Director in terms of the overall creative direction, especially in a game where they need to be concerned about things like combat, gameplay, multiplayer, etc. A Game Director's job is to figure out how everything fits together and provides a consistent experience, not to say what the story beats are.
