No problem. And yeah, I'd put The Master a close second. It's only gotten better with time, but I just think ZDT is a bit more accessible for a mass audience.

You found TSN boring? How? Either way, I'd agree with Living Legend. It's one of my absolute favorite movies of the century so far.

Yep, Moneyball definitely should have won that year.

2010-2012 were all misfires, IMO...

2010 - The Social Network should have won over The King's Speech
2011 - Moneyball should have won over The Artist
2012 - Zero Dark Thirty should have won over Argo
Agree with first two. I love Argo though.

It's been awhile since I've seen it, but from what I remembered I hated Eisenberg's performance. Especially all of the wordy monologues.

How about 2008?

Slumdog Millionaire
Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader

Of those, I think Benjamin Button is far and away the best movie. Though Milk was pretty solid as well. Slumdog was just a mediocre movie at best, imho. (The Reader is the only one of that list I haven't seen.)

But, I think most would agree that The Dark Knight was THE movie of 2008, and has made a larger cultural impact than any of those.

Out of those listed I enjoyed Slumdog Millionaire the Most.

Sorry, meant to say I'd agree with GiveEmHellBill, but you got my point. Eisenberg didn't blow me away or anything, but the wordy monologues were some of the best parts, IMO.

Ooof. That was terrible year. I still can't believe TDK wasn't even nominated. And man, I'm the biggest Fincher fan there is, but Benjamin Button is not a good movie.

I enjoyed The Reader, but that might be because I enjoy WWII and seeing Kate Winslet naked...

At least the backlash is the reason they expanded the BP category to 10.

What's wrong with Benjamin Button?

Good point.

As for BB, Brad Pitt's character does absolutely nothing in that movie. He simply exists from scene to scene, pinning after a woman. But there's no real plot or agency. That, and there was a hilarious video I remember around that time showing how much of it is borrowed from Forrest Gump, as the same screenwriter wrote both movies. It's weirdly similar in a ton of subtle and not-so-sublte ways. Overall, I just thought it was incredibly boring, though. It looks amazing, and has a some cool sequences/effects, but man, I don't know what Fincher was thinking.

You kinda were supposed to hate him, which is why I found him perfect for the role (even though he didn't do a Zuckerberg imitation).

That's funny, when you mentioned Fincher above I could have sworn Robert Zemeckis directed Benjamin Button.

i agree with that list except for 1994 I would take Shawshank instead of Pulp over Forest Gump

I mean, couldn't you say that about most romantic movies?

Similarly with Call Me By Your Name. (Which I know you found boring, but I was riveted from beginning to end.)

It's also one of the most influential I would argue. After that period EVERYTHING looks like Fincher and a ton of scores have sounded like Reznor/Ross.

This is a fair criticism for this particular movie because it was in essence a character study. The movie is literally named for the main character.

However, I do find that people place an overemphasis on the idea of "character development" and "arcs". Not every movie has to have an origin, conflict, resolution for its actors or actresses. I saw someone earlier in this thread apply this same criticism to Dunkirk. Dunkirk isn't that kind of movie. I seriously can't name one character in it and that's fine. It wasn't about them or their history or development. The plot device was was the event. Everything else was peripheral or supplemental. And that's okay.

Some movies are made to focus on the character motivations (ex. The Godfather). Some movies are made to focus on the events unfolding (ex. Dunkirk). Some movies are in between (ex. Boyhood).

This was a fun article discussing the movies that should have won since 1976. Some of their picks include:

1979: Apocalypse Now over Kramer vs. Kramer
1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark over Chariots of Fire
1985: Back to the Future over Out of Africa
1988: Big over Rain Man
1989: Field of Dreams over Driving Miss Daisy
1990: Goodfellas over Dances With Wolves
1994: Pulp Fiction over Forrest Gump
2005: Brokeback Mountain over Crash
2012: Skyfall over Argo

79, 81, 85, and 89 I 100% agree with the article. While I agree with the choices of the article for these two years, you can see the reasoning in 88 and 90 for the actual winners. As much as I thought the movie was slow, 05 I agree with.

1994 was a no-win situation. Pulp, Shawshank, and Forrest Gump each would have topped most years, they just happened to go against each other.

2012 there were 3 favorites movies of the year to me, and a Bond movie would always have trouble overcoming the stigma. But ZDT should have edged out Argo.

Good article though

94 was insane with Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump and Shawshank. Hell, even Lion King didn't get a nomination despite Beauty and the Beast breaking the animation barrier three years earlier.

I was the prime demographic for Jim Carrey movies that year (13 years old) and I honestly had no idea those three movies came out in the same year. Holy sh*t. I knew they were basically back-to-back-to-back, but I assumed that was over two or three years or so. That's insane.

Jim Carrey was a God in the mid-90's. To think he went from an unknown tv actor to the biggest star in the world in one calendar year is insane. As a kid in the 90's, there was just nobody bigger than him for those years.
