In 100% agreement, but this looks like a train that won't be stopped. For whatever reason, people/pundits are really clinging to it, and I'd be shocked if it didn't get a Best Picture nomination at this point.

I still need to see Dunkirk, but I haven't seen anything this year I've enjoyed more than Logan, I just really loved that movie.

I thought Get Out was great, but give me a break... Best Picture?

And that tweet is garbage

For context that tweet was in reference to the news that the Golden Globes decided that Get Out will compete in the comedy/musical category, which is the real garbage.

Didn't the Golden Globes put The Martian in that same category when it came out?

Oops! I did not realize that even a little bit. Definitely thought he was trying to make a statement about this movie and current social temperature and racism.

My bad. I am fake news.

Yep. Golden Globes are a joke for that, and many other reasons.

Why are they a joke? Just curious to hear from your perspective

Don't they basically just nominate stars who they think will help their ratings? Or their votes are easily bought by wining and dining.
Jim01
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes. While they do largely nominate most of the main Oscar contenders they are notorious for star****ing and nominating names. Plus they constantly throw weird crap in the comedy category, i.e. Leo winning Best Comedy Actor for Wolf of Wall Street.

Exactly. Both posts above sum up exact what I was going to say.

THe Lady Bird buzz seems pretty strong right now, will likely at least be director nod for Greta Gerwig
Agreed, I could see a Lady Bird or The Florida Project making a push this year among a relatively weak crowd. Still probably a long shot but who knows.

no matter who wins...it wont be better than announcing the wrong winner...then having that wrong winner have to correct the record.

I peed next to Jordan Horowitz at the movie theater the other day. He's the guy who was accepting for La La Land and then had to say it was Moonlight. I've been around a lot of celebs, but it was a uniquely strange feeling being around someone like that who isn't necessarily famous, but was at the center of a very infamous incident.

Lady Bird is phenomenal and will definitely be nominated for Best Picture, but as of know I don't think it'll win. I could see Gerwig winning for Best Original Screenplay, but probably not being nominated for Director. Don't get me wrong, her directing is flawless, I just don't think it's a super splashy/noticeable feat, but who knows. For a first-timer, it's stunningly good, though.

Overall, if I had to give a gut prediction right this moment, without having seen it but based on the buzz, I'd say I, Tonya takes Best Picture. Maybe. I think either Margot Robbie is going to take Best Actress, or Allison Janey is going to take Best Supporting Actress (both in I, Tonya), and along with pulling in a few other nominations, this movie is basically going to become the darling of the awards circuit. But again, that's just a feeling based on the buzz that's really starting to build.

I will say for sure it'll be one of these five for Best Picture: I, Tonya, Dunkirk, Three Billboards, Lady Bird, or The Post. With an outside shot from The Florida Project or an even further outside shot from The Last Jedi. But really, it's still just too early to tell. No one has seen The Post, Phantom Thread, or The Last Jedi, and we just don't have a complete picture yet.

Just watched Wind River and loved it. Tyler Sheridan is on an amazing run. Renner and Olsen were both really good as well. It's very early and I haven't seen a lot but this is definitely on my short list right now.

I can't imagine a world where Wind River isn't in contention as best film of the year. It was the best movie I've seen all year, and amazingly acted. The standoff scene and Renner's performance were great.

I know I am a cynic when it comes to all of this, but the current political climate and #metoo movement makes me think WW and The Post walk away with all the hardware.

There always seems to be an Oscar theme and the strong female protagonist of WW and The Post will be too attractive of a political statement for the academy to pass up.

Wind river will unfortunately be snubbed due to this, but TLJ may grab some attention with its female protagonist

It's the same world where Hell or High Water wasn't in serious contention for best picture. That was the best film of that year by far

I've seen 7 of their 9 projected Best Picture nominees (missing Darkest Hour and Florida Project). I would like to see I.Tonya, Wind River, and The Big Sick on that list.

Same here. 7/9, haven't seen Darkest Hour or Florida Project.

Though, next up for me is probably Molly's Game.

Watching live. First half of nominations reaction:

1. I could do without these shorts before each category
2. Darkest Hour looks on track for Best Picture nod with all it's racking up so far.
3. Why the lame break in between?

Second Half:

- Armie Hammer didn't make it in

- The Big Sick for Screenplay. Hell yes!

- James Franco didn't make it for Best Actor. Bit of a surprise. And Denzel made it in? huh.

- No Big Sick, Blade Runner 2049, I, Tonya for Best Picture. Would have like to see those.

- Phantom Thread with a couple surprise nominations for Director and Picture. I know it was on the short list but I thought something like The Florida Project would beat it out.

I've see 7 of the 9 Best Picture nominees. I need to see The Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread. Thanks to MoviePass that should be easy enough to knock out.

Spielberg and Hanks out and Jordan Peele and Daniel Kaluuya in as Best Director and Best Actor?
