Finally finished watching all the Best Picture nods. In my opinion, the no business winning the award movies on the list are Call Me by Your Name, 3 Billboards, The Post (similar to Lincoln, I think this film is highly overrated and I love Spielberg) and Dunkirk. Enjoyed all of those but just think they are closer to good movies than great ones. The middle category is Get Out, Lady Bird and Phantom Thread. Best category is Shape of Water and Darkest Hour. I'd prefer that Darkest Hour won but I'm thinking Shape takes it.

Missing nomination is I, Tonya. Best pic I saw this year it was not but it was a top 5 film this year. The concept of the storytelling was brilliant for the subject given what we know about it and Robbie and Allison Janney were both terrific in it.

It's funny, my tiers would be the exact opposite of yours, almost to a t.

I wanted to go see Shape of Water when I first saw previous opening weekend I made the mistake of googling for reviews and read Rex Reeds brutal review. He said it was an idiotic pointless movie that stole every film noir technique and that it was a movie made strictly for critics. After seeing all the critics and Hollywood praise I'm guessing he was right.

I don't think that will be the case. It was a really well done movie for its' genre. And it was a movie that appealed to a subject matter in a lot of intelligent and subliminal ways that a particular segment of people are sensitive to... but I've not heard even a lot of black people either in the media or just people I know call it hands down the best picture.

It absolutely deserved to be nominated but nobody thinks it was a runaway best picture this year. I don't think it should win but wouldn't be surprised if it did.
