Ooof. That was terrible year. I still can't believe TDK wasn't even nominated. And man, I'm the biggest Fincher fan there is, but Benjamin Button is not a good movie.
Man if you think that was a terrible year then you and I will never agree on movies.

This was a fun article discussing the movies that should have won since 1976. Some of their picks include:

1979: Apocalypse Now over Kramer vs. Kramer
1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark over Chariots of Fire
1985: Back to the Future over Out of Africa
1988: Big over Rain Man
1989: Field of Dreams over Driving Miss Daisy
1990: Goodfellas over Dances With Wolves
1994: Pulp Fiction over Forrest Gump
2005: Brokeback Mountain over Crash
2012: Skyfall over Argo
I love Pulp Fiction but Forrest Gump is better. I agree with some of those, but definitely not Gump being worse than Pulp Fiction.

Crash edges out Chicago as the worst movies to win best picture

Both are complete garbage

I hate both those movies so damn much.

Maybe the only thing cool to come out of the Grinding Nemo win...

My choice is Pulp Fiction, but any of the three are legitimate choices for BP.

Michael Shannon is one of the stars of The Shape of Water. But because he's doing theater in Chicago he couldn't get away and instead is watching the Oscars at bar. It's just cool to see the star of a Best Picture winner watching his movie win while randomly hanging out in public with a beer in hand.

It's just a nod to a guy who is an actor through and through. Not in it for the glory but for the craft. He's a Chicago theater disciple who still performs and teaches there.

So it's a cool moment that on the biggest night with stars and media attention, instead of being in Hollywood sharing in the success of the BP winner he was in, it's just another night after work for him.

Or.... DDL is retiring, and clearly he sees the upcoming need for a new most meta actor in the world ">

Looking back at some of the years...man 2011 was thin.

2011:
The Artist
The Descendants
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
The Help
Hugo
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball
The Tree of Life
War Horse

I'm not a fan of any Woody Allen movie except this one. I've watched it multiple times.

I love that movie so much. It'd get my vote from that group... but man that is a weak field.

A DDL and Michael Shannon staring contest might be too much for celluloid to handle. Those two are intimidating as F!!!!

2011 has been brought up before, and always has me wondering about Crazy, Stupid, Love. It was a great movie, with some quality acting. Why can't a rom-com win an Oscar, or at least get nominated? Steve Carroll and Ryan Gosling were both really good in their roles also. I know people will argue that anyone could have done those roles (which I don't agree) just like I wouldn't say anyone could have played Winston Churchill.
Crazy, Stupid, Love is a really enjoyable film. Great acting, great story, nice twist, some feel good moments.

I love these way-too-early projections. Lots of good stuff in here about all the awards contenders we'll likely be buzzing about toward the end of the year...

Personally, I've heard that the scripts for both The Favourite (pictured above, starring Margot Robbie) and First Man (Damien Chazelle directing Ryan Gosling in a Neil Armstrong biopic) are flat out amazing. But going through that list, there's a lot of other stuff to be excited for later this year as well.

Mary Queen of the Scots not The Favourite

Maybe he'll be nominated along with Woody Allen and Hollywood will implode.

this will probably be the biggest movie ever released straight to Netflix. Already considering a trip to LA at the end of the year to see it on the big screen.
I've asked this in a couple of other threads but don't think its been answered.

Its kinda unclear to me if this is going to be released just to Netflix subscribers or if its being distributed by Netflix to movie houses? Which one is it?
Bunk Moreland
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think I read that Netflix owns distribution everywhere but Asia and will open it in select US markets then put it on streaming for the masses but that may be wrong.

Also, I'm equally excited as I am nervous about this one due to Marty's propensity to not be able to edit a movie in a succinct enough fashion. Hope it's a bit cleaner in that regard but I'm game no matter what.

Can't wait for Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Bobby Cannavale, Harvey Keitel and Ray Romano. In terms of budget, hype and awards potential, this will probably be the biggest movie ever released straight to Netflix. Already considering a trip to LA at the end of the year to see it on the big screen.

Love Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer), looking forward to seeing how his unique style translates to somebody else's script in The Favourite.

Chazelle's First Man is my most anticipated awards contender of the year, while Mission Impossible: Fallout is the big budget blockbuster I'm looking forward to the most.
Can't wait for a movie called the Irishman that is 100% Irish free in your cast listing

I don't know. I had trouble watching Verdi's opera Aroldo set in Scottland but sung by Itallians in Italian with red beards. There is something to be said for authenticity.

DDL pulled off Lincoln better than any American could. And the person the movie is based on is Swedish / Irish. Name one actor that fits that.

Netflix seems inclined to stick with their strategy of releasing everything globally on their streaming platform on a single day. To qualify for the Oscars they'll do a limited run in theaters in LA and NYC, but that's it. They did this a few months ago with Mudbound and a lot of people thought it hurt it's awards potential, so it'll be interesting to see if they can eventually break through using this strategy.
Its pretty stupid of the Academy if they can't fix their rules to have straight to Netflix movies qualify for awards without a gimmick.
