Wow. What creativity in that list. I hate when BP, BD and BSP all are the same movies. The actors this year seemed to come from the same films too. Just dumb.

Who should be in the spots and who should be taken out so it is more creative?

I mean there has to be some correlation among those categories, right?

Yeah, why would the Best Pictures be directed by the Best Directors?

Makes no sense.

**** yeah.

Though, does anyone else think Zimmer should've gotten it for Blade Runner 2049 instead of Dunkirk? That one stood out more to me.

Has anyone seen and can recommend any of te documentaries?

I've seen Icarus (it's on Netflix) and it is one of the better "movies" I've seen this year but am not familiar with the others.

Lol at Get Out and Daniel Kaluuya getting nominated.

Those over Wind River/Blade Runner and Franco are a complete joke

Agreed, but we know why it wasn't Franco.

No. the score from Dunkirk was unlike anything I've heard or experienced in a film.

It was fantastic, no doubt. Felt like it was your own heart beating at times.

But I feel like Blade Runner was even more out there. The crazy industrial-sounding stuff he was doing at times was pretty interesting.
israeliag

Blade Runner was more enjoyable. Both, IMO, were equally emotive. But, Dunkirk's was more like sound effect than score.

A rare time where I will be actively cheering for a movie to win a specific award. Last time i did was for the revenant (leo for best actor)

Glad Logan got some love, but was really hoping for a nom for Sir Patrick Stewart.

Just watched this again the other night and totally agree. I have a feeling people couldn't get over it being a "superhero" film despite the fact it was pretty much a Western.

Kinda forgot about that... would've loved to see Patrick Stewart get nominated but the Supporting Actor field is absolutely loaded. That's as strong a group as I've ever seen.

I've seen all of those except for Florida Project and I believe Dafoe is actually the favorite. All the others were absolutely great though. Hoping Rockwell can pull it off.

Patrick Stewart's performance wrecked me. Due to the combination of his skill, having had family go through dementia and Alzheimer's (and the fear that I am most likely going to be afflicted by that, too), and the influence Cpt. Picard has had on shaping my personal ethics and ideals, it's not a portrayal I will forget anytime soon.

I also avoided all trailers and spoilers for Logan, so I was taken by surprise that they would do that to arguably the most powerful and benevolent superhero.

Kind of crazy. If Del Toro wins Best Director (which is likely), 4 of the last 5 years will have been Mexican BD winners.

I'm betting that Three Billboards is the big winner this year: Picture, Director, Actress and Supporting Actor.

I've just got this gut feeling that this movie is unstoppable right now.

Of that list, I'd go with Dunkirk or Darkest Hour.

Dunkirk may look like the type of movie that Hollywood likes to honor with all kinds of awards, but I'd be genuinely surprised if it wins pretty much anything. Wide-spread favorable reviews, audiences seem to really like it despite its unusual format, lots of people saw it ... Oscar typically responds with "meh" ...

But having watched it on BluRay recently, I no longer rank it as my favorite of the year. It loses something from the theater to the living room (I think it was all that stress the score/sound generated that unless your living room has a gigantic screen and a sound system that will have the neighbors three streets over calling the cops, you just are not going to replicate at home).

I do find it interesting that two movies set around the same historical event are nominated. Darkest Hour was a fantastic movie, and I think I'd just take it as a literal guarantee that Gary Oldman gets an acting award.

My favorite from last year is Blade Runner 2049, and those dipsticks couldn't be bothered to include it in their list of nominees.

He was a hell of a lot better than Denzel was in that dog**** Roman J Isreael Esq movie. That's the one that shouldn't have been there

Do we? You realize Oscar ballots were out for weeks before the claims right? In fact, those claims didn't surface until 48 hours before ballots were due. It's highly doubtful those allegations had anything to do with him missing out.

But that doesn't fit the narrative i guess.

Yup, I think a lot of people could really relate to the character's struggles and how it affected those around him, and he was just nails in the role.

The fact he's never gotten an Oscar nom is mindblowing.

That would suck because it doesn't deserve any of those, in my opinion. It was a good movie, nothing more. Maybe Frances, but I thought Sally Hawkins was marginally better in her role this year.

Franco got screwed over on this one. He was absolutely amazing in the Disaster Artist and without him that movie is no where close to as awesome as it was. The award should be based on the best performance. Whatever the Oscars is a Hollywood CJ anyways
You're tearing me apart- Tommy Wiseau

Yeah, why would the Best Pictures be directed by the Best Directors?

Makes no sense.

Then why give separate awards? I'm not a frequent enough movie watcher to catch everything in a year so wouldn't venture other suggestions (ask me in 2019 and I can make a decent list for 2017).

But, can a directing performance not be separated from the writing and fundamental story?

I thought, for example, that the directing in Logan was superb because so much was pulled from the actors (including a young one) but that story/type of film was never going to get a best picture because it is "a superhero movie."

By creativity, I mean the ability to separate those different aspects and judge/award performances on their own merits.
