Because it keeps getting talked about in the other thread and it would be rude to spoil the series for the other people.

If you haven't read the books and do not want the series spoiled, quit reading now and press the back button.

No complaints, you've been warned.

So, thoughts just to get things started.

1. It is rather funny to hear people think Bran is dead. I also recall the push being more of Jamie holding onto him, then just letting go
2. I said this when I saw the cast, but I imagine Catelyn being a bit more attractive. Overall though, the casting was great. My personal favorite is probably Viserys. The actors nailed him. I can't wait to see his crowning.
3. I realized today that I didn't even notice Theon, though I wasn't looking. I'm interested to see him now that I've read through the other books, just to see if there are any sort of hints, because his POV chapters in the later books pretty much blindsided me when I read them. Definitely paints him in a new light when the first two books are revisited
4. The wall looked amazing. Can't wait to see the scene where the wilders attack it
5. I like this Ned guy. Hope he's there for the whole series

Oh, and apparently the series is racist

Wow.

Just read that link and that's all I can say, wow.

I thought the blogger you linked to responded to it very well, though.

What's funny is the dothraki in some ways are more "civilized" than the rest of the characters. At least the Dothraki are honest about what they do.

Just bought the first book about a week ago. I'm a fifth of the way in. Reading the book makes the show much more enjoyable. Easier for me to understand who's who.

I'm re-reading the book in tangent with the show (not on purpose, just it's happening to sync up). The book gives you so much more detail and character growth than the show.

The marriage ceremony was kind of odd and had several things wrong with it that weren't faithful to the book. The eggs were green, black, and cream, not green, gray, and gray. Makes them look dead already, which is what you're supposed to believe but still seems like an obvious oversight.

Also they never showed Daenarys having fun with her horse. In the book she rides it and goes back and thanks the Khal for 'giving her the wind'. The Khal smiles and, to me, that was important for their relationship and his acceptance of her, which leads up to the next scene that they cut off short in the show (maybe continuing it next time?) where she accepts him. Currently in the show it seems more like rape than her actually accepting him.

But yah the show is still pretty awesome.

They don't have enough time to portray the books exactly as is.

I dont mind the fact that they make changes from the books but the series didnt have the feel that Boardwalk empire or even true blood did...

Im concerned that it isnt going to be THAT good. Or good enough to generate the hype to overcome it's pigeon holing as a genre.

a couple preview clips for episode 2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFcwyNDVy4k&feature=feedu

this one i'm really excited about, the dialogue is basically straight from the books. i love the "It is known." that line, along with "You know nothing, Jon Snow." are two I was excited to hear spoken

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPrW3Swrp4E&feature=relmfu

this one was an interesting addition, i don't think Jaime and Jon ever really had a conversation in the book. but this definitely shows Jaime's arrogance and foreshadows the status of the Night's Watch when Jon gets there

also...pretty sure that's Needle being forged while Jon watches at the beginning

Where's Theon?

He was a major character in the book and right now in the chronology he's supposed to be a ward of House Stark...

Was he in the premiere and I just missed him?

I wonder if they will show the Red City made of all bricks where, IIRC, the dragons 1st go to battle. The description of this location creeped me out for some reason.

I am also forgetting some of the characters. They mentioned the tournament but I hope they detail it well with the different knights especially the Mountain. Wasn't he beat by poison tipped cuts from the conniving knight?

Shiet I am going to have to reread the series.

Then again there is a dedicated wiki for this series.

theon was in episode 1. he was the one holding Ned's sword and wanting to kill the direwolves when they found them. he was also in that shaving scene with jon and robb

I started out really liking the books, but GRRM has no qualms about killing off characters. Made it tough for me to invest much interest in plot lines where the participants would be killed before the plot played out.

I really liked the show last week and look forward to more episodes.

wait...that made you like the books less?

first time i've heard that

That makes me like the books more. A lot of books you're reading and the characters are in a hard situation and you know they will get out, because they're one of the main characters, so it takes away all suspense.

Well, I thought that too up until the slaughter at the Twins. IIRC those were the first major characters to be killed off. Though that was in Storm of Swords, I think, so it seems odd that they're the first two to die off in the third book. Probably some happened before and I've just forgotten about it.

First episode did very good job. Almost always disapointed with movies done on books I've read, but not so far on this. While the length between books has been aggravating his willingness to kill off main characters I agree with.

I assume you mean Eddard? I guess you're right. I remember being surprised when he died, and a bit sad, but I reckon I haven't considered him a major character for so long lol.

Edit: Wow. A cryptographist I am not.

I forgot a LOT of the characters, their roles and their allegiances.

BUT...I know I did not forget that Arya, Tyrion, John Snow, Dinaryaes and a few others are my favorites.

Linklater is just FANTASTIC as Tyrion. I can't believe how pleased I am with the casting.

Episide 2 >>>>>> Episode 1 and it's only going to get better.

Posted in the other background thread as well...

If you watch the opening credits closely and look at the engravings of the spinning armillary sphere/astrolabe thingy you see the following images. The first thing you can make out is a volcano and then a dragon which is maybe roaring over a city. The next time we see the rings we see Direwolf, Lion, and Stag attacking each of three heads of a dragon. In the final image you see Stag triumphant, haloed by the sun, with Lion kneeling to the immediate left and Wolf, and maybe other animals also kneeling/watching in the periphery of the image.

Finally got to watch last night's episode (this is what happens when you don't have HBO).

1. It's funny how you can know exactly what's going to happen and still be shocked when it actually does (Ned killing Lady)
2. A complaint: they've made Jamie a bit too likable. I loved in the books how I went from absolutely hating him in the first book to liking him a lot in the fourth book. I shouldn't start out liking him here.
3. A scene I am really anxious to see after tonight is Joffrey's death because the little **** deserves it

Its been a while since I read the first book, can someone help me out with Cersei's story? Did she have a first kid that died as an infant in the book? I don't remember that at all.

No, that was added in. Or more of, extrapolated (or back...polated...whatever). She had mentioned before that she killed off some of her kids that were Robert's via poisoning herself while pregnant so the assumption is that this is just a modified story of that. She killed the kid, but is modifying the story to elicit sympathy from Catelyn.

Have been dying to see this series since it got announced. Need to go re-read the books though to get ready for No. 5 (it has been a while)

1. Also agreed that Catelyn is not as attractive in the series as I'd pictured her being in the books. Pictured her as a red head babe.

2. Also didn't notice Theon until you mentioned it

3. The assassination scene was visceral and awesome. Grabbing a knife and a direwolf tearing throats out? EXCIITE

4. Shot of the Wall was amazing.

Super excited that S2 got green-lit and ready to watch the rest of this season!

The title clearly says Books, not Book and I clearly say if you do not want the series spoiled, don't read in the first post. If you choose to gloss over that, that's your fault. There's a spoiler free thread elsewhere on this board
