I will ferment it inside of a corny keg w a floating dip tube. All dry hops inside of nylon sacks. And I'll pressure transfer it off of the hops before serving.

First all grain brew day today ended with 1.40 OG vs expected 1.60. The mash was hot (159 F vs 150 F) and efficiency was down at 25.4.

Would the mash temp. delta account for that or did I mess something else up?

In my experience (and I have a lot of it in terms of missing OG!), yes, that is likely the main culprit.

I added likely because there could be other process issues outside of this. But if you fix this first then the other stuff can be easier to diagnose. In theory.

If your mash is 159, then there's a good chance your strike temp was above 170. When the strike water gets above 170 it denatures enzymes needed to make sugars. Hence, why your gravity is so low.

I have a propane system. Starting to look into hybridizing my HLT and MT to electric.

Brewbuilt has some new options, spin off of MoreBeer.

Still 3 vessel. I have too much sunk costs, so the only option is sinking more in.

I'm at a point with my equipment now where I want to get some good solid use out of my current brewing setup before I change anything major. Next upgrade would probably be a stainless fermentation vessel. But, I am mulling over just buying another keg or 2 instead and fermenting slightly smaller batches in them for ease of pressure transfers!

That'll work for sure. I have 2 14g older more beer conical. They're at least 12 years old and I picked them up used. There's so much crazy new gear out now. I have a Spike Flex+ about to arrive. I still have to buy some fermentation gear for it.

There's a ton of people getting out, keep an eye on CL/eBay/offer up in about a 100mi radius. Best part of used SS is you can always sell it at zero loss.

Let me know what you think of the Spike Flex+. I considered buying one but the cost was too high for me. Maybe one day!

I ended up going with the Anvil Fermenter and have enjoyed it, especially after I supplemented with a dip tube bung.

I have fermented in kegs and enjoyed using them, but be absolutely sure to include a dip tube screen, otherwise you will be in a world of pain, especially if you dry hop frequently or do anything fruited. It also helped me to cut off 1/4 to a 1/2 inch of the dip tube to keep it off of the trub, but YMMV.

Maybe if I win the lottery and can build a whole separate brewing building, I will get some SS Conicals. But in the real world, I am very happy fermenting in corny kegs. Easy to move, easy to transfer, easyish to clean. I just wish I had some 6 gallon ones.

Flex+ arrived. Good build quality, pretty light without any attachments on it. Which is good for cleaning. Different style of gasket than the older MoreBeer/Blichmann conicals, I already prefer the look and feel of this type. Unfortunately it's not backwards compatible with the other lids due to the lid having a groove where the gasket fits on. I already know this one is so much better.

Got some weight when all the attachments are on. It'd be heavy with 5.5gallons of wort.

Upside: so much more durable, closed pressure transfers, can carb in it. Shiny.

Downside, pretty expensive. With the pickup tube and squeeze clamp on it, I'm pretty sure this won't fit in a dorm fridge for fermenting. The fermentation package, heater/neoprene insulation, ss coil, pump etc...is another $300. Making this pretty expensive overall. I haven't bought that yet, but I know I probably will.

I am going to get rid of all my carboys, plastic and glass. I probably wouldn't have bought this without the MIL discount, but can't say I'm unhappy.

It also came with the new 4 port lid, 1 4" and 3 1.5", very happy I didn't get any of the older models after waiting 3 months.

Overall first impression: it's pretty sweet.

Just remembered I had a couple hundred bucks in gift cards from an automotive survey I did. Wasn't sure they'd actually be good, but just converted them to Spike gift cards and ordered the rest of the crap for the Flex+. Cards expire in August, so why not just blow it now.

I already had some extra hardware like Ranco controllers and an extra heater around, so was able to not have to buy their $360 package.

I haven't brewed in a year. I suppose I need to get the factory back online making yeast farts.

Need 1 thermowell from Brewers Hardware. Had the sample port already as a leftover part.

So you're doing 5G batches now?
AlaskanAg99
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I have enough kettle sizes to drop down. I split most of my of my batches with my dad, but he doesn't like anything SRM>7. If it's not a pils, APA/IPA I have issues. Dumping 5g just sucks.

Never sell your smaller gear. 26g MT do not work for a 5g batch.

Interesting experiment with not boiling the wort. Not sure if I want to try it, but maybe one of you will.

Well, after 15 months I dusted off and spent a LOT of time cleaning out my entire brewhouse, and over the last 9 days I've knocked out 2 batches for 20gallons. Czech Pils was first and it's fermenting away at 53F, a week later I brewed my house IPA and it was fermenting away at 65F, just raised the temp to 68F on it to help it finish out.

Both wyeast pitches, so I'm about to have a TON of pils and chico yeast. Will harvest both.

Next is another lager: German Pils (1/2 harvested yeast) and then rolling into a small APA around 4.3% which is based on one of my favorite worts, which is geared more toward a Golden Ale, but with a hoppy charge. Lots of late hops and dry hops to make it punchy.

Between the two yeasts I'll be knocking out lagers and West Coast APA/IPA for awhile.

Awesome!

I brewed a blonde ale with my dad a little over a week ago. Can't wait to keg it and try! First beer I've brewed since January. The last beer I brewed I completely messed up. Mashed too high and just didn't get enough good fermentable sugar on it.

By all signals, the blonde ale should turn out exactly how I wanted it.

That's funny, I brewed both beers with my dad. He takes 1/2 of my 10g batches.

Next round will be an 16g batch split 3 ways, the APA, and then 10g of the German Pils. I'm going to ride this yeast for awhile and keep knocking out lagers and WC APA/IPAs. Might even squeeze out a baltic porter (lager) in there. I do have the 1 5g fermenter I haven't used, and I just bought the thermowell I need for it.

After so much time off, locating and cleaning/replacing parts has been interesting and I've come in high on volume twice, so I need to figure out what my problem is there, it's all the same equipment that was dialed in for years, so it's 100% operator error.

Kegged my blonde ale on Sunday! Ended with a FG of 1.004 for an ABV of about 5.3%.

S-05 is always a monster for me. I got about 90% attenuation on this one. Anyone else have that happen with this yeast?

I think the end result will still be just fine, but the last 2 times I have used S-05 I have really shot over the prescribes 78% - 82% attenuation. I like the yeast, so maybe I just need to plan for higher attenuation on other recipes with it.

Safale US05?
I'd say your FG looks low, how's the body and mouthfeel? Only concern is with it being too thin.

I've got to clean and sanitize kegs this week so I can package Thursday, really clean Friday and prep to brew Saturday. .ami g a German pils since I've got a massive amount of lager yeast now.

I'm about to brew a rauchbier and a stout that I'm going to soak oak cubes in bourbon and let that sit until December.

Yes SafAle US05. I sampled the beer when I kegged it. I'm not great at taking that and being able to say "hey this is thin" or not. I'll have a better idea when I tap it soon.

Mash temp wasn't super low or anything, so I am not sure why the rip roaring effect is happening. Oh well, should still be a fine blonde.

Pretty neat. Would love to do a small batch of a big beer with some aging like this.

If you have a spot to age, it's worth it. I try to brew a big stout in July for the winter.

Kegged Czech Pils today, brewed a 5% Pre-Prohibition Lager, reusing the yeast.

Tomorrow morning kegging my IPA onto dry hops.

Next week a 4.8% APA. Repitcing onto 1056. Easiest way to drop per batch cost is to repitch.
