Mine is with Cirro right now.

If it's that common, we should start a running list of good unpublished rates and let everyone benefit.

The rate I got is on this page - lower than I have seen anyone post.

I'm in Victoria, kinda in the Houston market. They have me with Cirro

The VP also told me that march/April is the best time to buy for the summer, and get in a 6 month contract. Then go month to month in the fall when rates are cheaper.

This is what they got me from StarTex in Houston.

1000 kWh:
$0.059
2000 kWh: $0.065

Seven---how's life in Victoria? I was born and raised there and loved it growing up... but got the hell out after high school. Sometimes I have thoughts of going back...

I just looked up the rates on the startex site and the lowest they offer is over $0.09. What a racket. Another example for the folks that say they can just shop their own and we are wasting our money....

They signed me up with Green mountain in DFW. The rates I got are about $0.02 less than the same named plan on the green mountain website.

We love it here. Seems to be a great place to raise a family. Been here for 4 years

If you go to the Powertochoose.org website, you will find a six month contract from Startex for $.052 cents (assuming 1,000 kwh). The company websites don't always list their best promotional offers that can be found on some of these third party websites. Ogre Energy recognizes this and can potentially find better offers as a result. But an individual can find them as well as long as you do a bit of searching...

A lot of times you can't find the rate on any of those power to choose type sites. This has been discussed. It's not always just a matter of doing the research yourself- in some cases energy ogre finds a better rate than an individual can find on their own.
PetroAg87

When they can find a better rate then I can, I'll consider them. But so far that hasn't been the case. And I was able to find a deal that slightly beats what Ogre found for you also.

Seems like the advantage to this service isn't the "hidden" deals, but rather it is their daily monitoring to ensure that you continue to receive the best rates.

That and the time savings. If it saves me an hour or two every other month and saves me money then it is easily worth $10/month. Gross savings of $90, $80 net, the first month has already almost paid for the entire year.

You didn't find a rate than what was available in Dfw about a month ago. I don't care if you use it- just letting you know they can find rates that are lower than power to choose.

I didn't look a month ago. But I looked just now in the DFW area and found a PUBLISHED rate that, at $.05 per kwh (@ 1,000 kw) is cheaper than this company found for you, right?

It is that claim that there are hidden rates which I am questioning.

THIS is what I believe is the potential advantage of a company like this. They do the research and legwork that some people would prefer not to do. For those people, this plan is probably a good idea.

You are an engineer, aren't you?

So obnoxious. Let me break it down for you. I'm capable of searching on power to choose. I did so. I couldn't find a great rate. Energy ogre found a lower rate. This was my individual situation. It's apparently different for you. Congrats.

I don't know the owners. I have 0 connection with the company. If they can't save you money- I don't care. They did for me- and a few others on this site (that also couldn't find the rate they found).

Obnoxious because I point out that I have seen no evidence that this company can do something that an idividual can't also do with just a bit of research?

quote:
For example - power to choose claims about 8 cents is the cheapest in my area energy ogre signed me up for a plan that is 6 cents.
Obnoxious for pointing out that power to choose actually shows a Startex plan for 5 cents in your area?

quote:
I can't really find that deal anywhere online.
Obnoxious for pointing out that you CAN find even a slightly better deal online?

If they can't save you money- I don't care. They did for me-
Whether they did or not, they certainly save people some time so I can see why it would be an advantage to some groups. So congrats on that.

Wait - are you the same petro that posts on the politics board? It all makes sense....

Same one. In addition to talking politics, I also am a homeowner just like so many other Ags...
Nomad
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I didn't know the home improvement board was this serious.

Some ags have saved money. I was able to save money- others have as well.

No need to argue. Move on. I'm sorry it couldn't save you money. I have no attachment to the company.
PetroAg87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't think it is a matter of this board being too serious. Its just a discussion and a potential difference of opinion as to what this company can offer as a benefit. We both agree that it can save time. But we apparently have had different experiences with their ability to find plans that are better than we ourselves can find.
Nomad
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I didn't just get my plan. A month or two ago- I checked the compare sites and energy ogre found a cheaper rate available at that time. Several others experienced the same... What is there to argue?

We're in the process of buying our first home and moving out of a 1br apartment. Would this service be useful if I don't really have any idea what my monthly energy usage will be? It looks like it finds good rates regardless just looking for opinions.

Absolutely! You can sign up online and then tell them the date you want the service to start and they will set you up.
PetroAg87

I'm arguing your claims that "A lot of times you can't find the rate on any of those power to choose type sites," or that "If you are using powertochoose to compare or a site like that- you are likely over paying." There are several people who have looked into this and discovered that Ogre had no rates cheaper than the individual had already found.

Now is it possible that they found a rate for you just prior to it being published on powertochoose or similar websites? Possibly. Is it also possible that the rate was there and you possibly missed it? Sure. Especially given that a slightly lower rate than your's is currently listed and has been listed here in the Houston area for at least a month.

I'm also arguing your claim that "I can't really find that deal anywhere online." As previously pointed out, I HAVE found, not just that deal, but actually one just a bit better than Ogre found.

Give it up petro. We all get it you don't like the idea.
PetroAg87

Actually, as I already stated, I think the program is a good idea and could benefit people who don't want to spend the time monitoring the most current plans out there.

Saved another $60 this cycle. I expect this month and next it will be close to what my average bill was with Reliant. Also I never got charged an ETF for canceling early. Just keeps looking better.

I'll let you know if there are any hangups, but we signed up late June for switch over at the beginning of July followed up with a move mid-July (this week) and they handled it all for me in stride so far (so to clarify, they changed our current home's plan when the old one expired at the end of June, but then 2 weeks later I have them setting up a plan for our new home and then ending service at the current home with a bit of an overlap).

I just signed up. I was on a month to month market rate plan so there was no contract to break. Ogre connected me with a 6 month plan for $.053 per 1000 and $.05 per 2000. I do not see this specific plan advertised anywhere so it must be a promo plan. My MTM plan was about $.10 per kwh with TXU. I will save a ton of money on this deal.
