So sorry for your loss.

Thanks, it was completely unexpected. He had health problems but they were being managed. We think it was a heart attack. My parents made the arrangements and I have been dealing with all things physical and online (acconts, passwords,...) and the AFS.

Do they read everyone's name at Muster on campus or is it a specific list? He lived in San Marcos but I don't think he was active locally.

From what I remember they will call his name if you plan to attend the main muster. If not n you can add him to the list at your local muster.

T&P.

So sorry for your loss Fife...thoughts and prayers for you and the family!

My dad and I are the only ones in the family that went to A&M who are still around - we have a very small family. It's a long time from now so we'll see. I can't remember if he attended for his dad or not since it was over 20 years ago.

Taking care of a few more things for this project has helped out some on my end. It's mostly been simple stuff like door hardware. This is the first time I've installed Emtek. There are a few extra steps to it beyond what's typical but it has a much higher quality feel than what I'm used to.

Sorry for your loss, Fife T&P for you and your family...

Thanks for your response about the door, great stuff!

I'm back in town now and have started to get back to work.

The outside of the front door is finished and I'm going to start working on the inside today after work
I put in the light over the breakfast table and the Big Ass Fan in the family room

Other than that I'm mostly working odds and ends so I can wrap up this project already.

It's the medium sized one in white/caramel with Sense Me and a light kit. In the background is the PH5 lamp.

Second on the picture of the big ass fan.... I've been lobbying my wife for getting one of those and she kept vetoing it...

How you liking it so far? Quiet/Noisy? Move a lot of air? The darker colors and the shape look like something my fiance would love.
The Fife
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's completely silent and moves a ton of air. The materials feel much better quality than the other fans I've put up and taken down. The blades for one are made from actual wood (bamboo) instead of the pressboard stuff that gets droopy after a few years.

Of course, now it's winter so the fan probably won't be used a lot until it warms up again. I'm hoping Sense Me will be able to have it turn on automatically when we're here so I might be able to up the thermostat by a couple of degrees in summer. Putting in the dehumidifier last year already let us set the thermostat at 75 in summer and still be comfortable because it took the humidity down from 65%+ to 50%.

That looks great. I've never seen one with the bamboo blades and light kit before. Not sure I could ever convince myself to spend that on a fan, but it sure looks better than most other options available.

in general, your kitchen is too modern for my desires but that fan is a complete no way...looks like it was swiped off an old airplane's nose!

Ours are a little different but a house fan made from 787 fan blades would be awesome! It would probably be better used outdoors due to size though.

Rolls Royce! I have toured the factories that make those and many other fan blades as well as some of the propellers they make for nautical applications and it is truly awesome how minute the details are that go into those things.

Fife, tad just a tad bit of overkill!

The new front door is almost complete. The fun part where I trim it and mortise in the hinges is done though, so all that's left is putting in the actual trim that I will use around the windows and drilling/installing the doorknob. This has been a crazy amount of work and I'm glad to see it finally leave the dining room and go where it belongs. The old door really stood out as not working well with the exterior of the house or anything else at all. The "carpenter" that installed it also made a real mess out of everything so it was really drafty.

Looks great! We have eerily similar tastes. I put up the all white in my house in Dallas. That house is now sold and it's Fort Worth apartment life for me. Great choice on the PH5 lamp, bubble lamp and Haiku fan.

I'll probably never make my own thread so I'll just sporadically post pictures on yours. Here's one of my favorite professional photos taken for the listing.

Those are some fine choices for basically everything! The sliding doors are exactly what I want to do with our ground level room. I hope someday to have the house have that architecture inside and out, but it will take time and hard work + cash for things I can't do to make it happen.

At this point I am doing more odds and ends before I order veneer for the beam and pull the old frame and sidelight window. Stil waiting on the pantry doors too. This is the nearly finished door from the outside. Gotta stain and finish the window trim to match. The thing around the doorknob is more prominent in person than in the picture.

I also put a starburst escutcheon around my entry door knob. What's your plan for ditching the shutters? Or as some may call them, shudders.
The Fife

They'll probably go when I do the big outside modifications. The background is, the roof and HVAC will both probably "expire" around the same point in time. This is the ideal time to do what I really want to do - change the orientation of the entire roof of the original section of the house. It was built as a traditional ranch with the slope of the roof facing the street. The plans are to redo this so that the peak faces the street with the lower sloped side to the left running for 2/3 the width of the house and the higher sloped side to the right for the remaining 1/3.

Hopefully this will help simplify the roof design since it has been modified three times by additions and a chimney being put in 45 years ago and a lot of the areas where things join together have leaked in the past and present. It'll take a lot of playing around in Sketchup to really get a feel for how the changes would look from different angles. Of course I would get an actual architect involved instead of trying to sort it all out on my own. I'll try and get a picture or two that help explain it.

I can't take any credit for the architectural design of my home. It was built this way in 1954. I just got lucky enough to live there while I did.

The architect was featured in this year's AIA Dallas Home Tour pamphlet, though. https://www.aiadallas.org/v/columns-detail/Profile-David-Braden-FAIA/gt/

This architect made the house locally significant and helped make the home more valuable to buyers looking for MCM in Dallas.

I'm interested to see what you've got drawn up. Will you also lower the slope of the roof if possible?

Been lurking this thread for a while. Just wanted to say sorry for your loss Fife. I'm class of '09. Too young.

The house is looking great!
The Fife

Sort of... I'll have to photoshop/PPT up a few pictures I took of the house during lunch and host them today.

Yesterday I was a little distracted because I took a vacation day to stay around at home because Habitat came by and took a TON of old materials I have. We nearly filled their 14' box truck. It was all in the den, which used to look like a huge disaster. Now it's merely embarrassing.

I like your built in hair cutter.

Seriously. I think if I were to come over, I would wack my neck on that fan. Unless those are 10' ceilings...

The ceiling is over 10' where the fan is installed. It's OK.

I plan on breaking the far wall out (right of the fireplace) and replacing it with windows and sliding glass doors. This will lead to the back yard and a patio + pool. The fireplace will be replaced with a gas one and rebuilt to match the style of the house and look like it's always been there. It's in pretty bad shape anyway. The floor will be terrazzo. This is roughly a 2016 thing.

With the roof, the gameplan is to do something with it to move away from a traditional ranch. At the same time I would like to enlarge the windows to the full size of the opening in the brick. At this point it's unclear whether this type of roof or a butterfly roof would work out better but tying into the existing roof structures will be an issue that needs to be addressed. It's really hard to get a decent idea of it from my PPT photoshop job...

Please excuse the world's worst fence. The structure to the left is part of the 2002 addition.

The garage was added in 1979 and not tied in well to the existing structure either. Water intrusion has been an issue in the past.
