Our lights are 48" apart on the same row, rows are 4.5' apart. The pattern starts about 2.5' from the dining room and more or less above the edge of the cabinets on the peninsula. The row near the wall cabinets starts maybe a couple of feet from those. Lights are on a dimmer but are not overbearing when fully bright. Your spacing will probably be greater because you're using 6" instead of 4" cans.

Hope this helps space your pattern out some. If you have a basic kitchen and lighting layout I would recommend posting it on garden web because there are a couple of real experts there.

Cabinets show up on Monday. I hate waiting around, but we've at least been able to clean up some of the furniture and move it back in to the living and family rooms. There will be a massive cleanup when this project is finished - there's dust everywhere.

2 days left until cabinets... I have countertop samples but haven't been able to figure out much. The Viatera reminds me a bit much of corian. The Hanstone has a bit of a blue shade, and the Siltstone looks too busy. I need the cabinets in to really make a good decision.

I figured out doors and baseboards. I would like to find solid core, slab, birch doors but they aren't something carried in stock anywhere... This will be a fun one.

All the kitchen sink stuff came in late in the week. Fun to look at but not useful for much besides countertop templates yet.

First load of cabinets dropped off, second one will be here soon. Our room isn't blue, it's the morning sun.

In B/CS there is a lumberyard in Bryan that will custom make doors. Call a few near you and you will probably find out that will build you a spec door.

Ours was an odd size, plus were were trying to match existing doors in a 1960's house.

I'll have to ask around - the cabinet guys (now working for the new place since their old one went under) also do doors.

We plan on using finger pulls, except for the dishwasher and warming drawer where we will use handles by Miele. I've read that their newest dishwasher can open when you knock on the door which is cool, but since we will have a handle for the warming drawer the current model is ok.

MOAR pictures!

No flooring protection?!?

They're protected - you should see how carefully everything is being set down. Things not installed yet are on furniture pads. The satin finish shows no marks, we're cool.

The peninsula has been a bit of a struggle. It straddles both sides of what was the sill so there's a lot of leveling to do. Since the end of the peninsula will be a waterfall countertop that also has to be very precise.

still moar!

The peninsula is done and now the other side is in work. I'm not sure if they will finish today or tomorrow.

There are a couple of things that are small oversights here. One is that on the oven water stub out I didn't take into account the thickness of the vent in the cabinet above, and the pipe isn't long enough to for into the cabinet space. I'll put in a longer one in the morning.

Also, the refrigerator space was designed for a Subzero but we still have a regular sized LG. It had about six months on the clock when the project started and it's nice, so I couldn't justify getting something else. The space is there so we'll be ready for the next one.

Love the cabinets. I kept the cabinets in my house but upgraded the countertops and took the bar down to counter level. I also removed a "beam" that housed the sink vent and light switches. Counters are Caesarstone in nougat. Sink is a kohler whitehaven with a kohler faucet. I had a large tree fall on the house the day they started demo on the kitchen.

Awesome! That's a huge improvement. Very jealous of the architecture. We've gone to great pains to bring it back to our place but there's still a long way to go.

It's helpful to see the turquoise on the sink - I'm leaning towards using that color for the backsplash because it's age appropriate and after I removed the cabinets from the previous remodel we discovered that it's the color that the kitchen was originally painted.

They're having all kinds of fun getting the cabinets in so pictures would look about the same as yesterday at this point. I'm glad they're doing this and not me.

Thanks. I really love this house. It's one of a kind from a Dallas architect named David Braden. Lots of glass which is at the behind the photographer in each photo. That entire side of the house is five sliding glass doors back-to-back. Everything I've done to the house was with the original design in mind and takes into account modern materials with mid-century modern appearance.

I used an Ann Sacks tile for the back-splash. I originally wanted something in an elongated hex, but ultimately it was cost prohibitive. The shipping from California or Oregon was more than the cost of the tile. I was looking at Heath and Clayhaus Ceramics. Turquoise was in the mix for sure, but I figured with the sink it would be over the top. My first house in Fort Worth had a cool, original turquoise sink so I wanted to bring that back into this house.

The tile was from the savoy line.

Mid day update...
Doors are now going on. In the meantime I've been chasing down air leaks from the attic to living space. I've closed off two old HVAC returns that were abandoned, and the old attic exhaust fan (think: pre-A/C) that was also letting in a ton of air from up above. Hopefully this will help out energy efficiency a lot, the size of it all adds up to about the same as a large window being left open all the time.

Digging the chandelier in the other room.

So how are you going to know you are in the room if you don't see/taste/feel sawdust/dirt/construction debris now that the kitchen is almost done?

Your wife (or you) liking the fact you might be able to cook again?

We've been generally ok about keeping things clean, except for the dining room since the table saw was near the doorway for a while and it was used to store appliances/things that used to be inside cabinets/furniture. That room is a disaster.

Cooking will have to wait for just a while longer. Miele releases the 6000 series ovens on July 7th in the US so the tall cabinet is being set up for something that's not for sale yet. Can't have a cooktop until the countertops are in so.... yeah. I think I can rig up the dishwasher though and we've missed it more than anything else. She's tired of eating out all the time, and living with a microwave and toaster oven like I did in the dorm is getting a little old.

The chandler probably made more sense before the previous owners raised the floor 1' in there. The wife can't wait to make it go away. The dining room will be midcentury modern instead of today modern and should be a pretty quick and easy room to do.

Aaaand the end results. The cabinets are done, minus putting the panel on the dishwasher. They're prewired for the undercabinet lighting, which is mortised into the bottom of the cabinet. The diffuser is the only thing visible.

Today I'm going to try and get the fridge put where it belongs, order the finger pulls, and general cleanup.

Tomorrow I need to bring the countertop samples back, and take the sink and other stuff along with me. Templating happens on Thursday. The countertop will be Zodiaq (DuPont) in Cloud White. In the meantime I need to get the accessory lighting going and figure out the interior doors already.

What is the cost of the Zodiaq product versus Caesarstone?
The Fife
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not sure - they didn't have any samples from that brand that looked like what we were looking for. FWIW the prices for Silestone, Viatera, and Zodiaq were the same. Hanstone would have been about $500 more. The countertops are around 73 sq ft so about $6.85 more.

They were surprised that pricing for Zodiaq was the same - the person in sales called the distributor while I was standing there but mentioned beforehand that it would probably be higher because DuPont thinks highly of themselves.

We're actually in the Toyota truck and Mazda owner club, dubi. If you owned a Ferd too we'd be sthuper duper exclusive. Although I don't technically own the Ferd, I just drive it every day and let someone else pay for it.

And yes, I like both of your kitchens. Since the PO gutted his rent house before he sold it to us, I, as a tight wad, cannot justify ripping out new cabinets and granite to go with something as nice as y'all have.

Ferd F-100 owner/caretaker here.

Templating is done now and I have the rest of the day off. I need to pay a few people, run to the lumber place, and HD for some supplies for the LED strips. Today should be at least somewhat productive.

Slow going... I've spent a lot of time chasing down why the dehumidifier runs all the time, sealing up places where hot air is coming into the living space and whatnot and the cause was... a setting on the thermostat that caused the dehumidifier to run when it was supposed to be off and not run when it was supposed to be on. Brilliant. I did notice a problem with the main HVAC drain while up there troubleshooting so maybe it's a blessing in disguise.

I'm having a lot of trouble finding interior doors locally. I'll need to have them built, or buy them from somewhere in Ohio for $200 or so each. It's simple... solid core, flat panel, birch. I'll probably have to go with a local place to have the front door / jamb made too.

Other than that we're still moving in and I'm doing odds and ends until more materials come in.
