I understand wear and tear etc. Ive never seen the avg spot price that low. Thera a reason. But it's interesting. And yes. There will be a place for junk silver in a system that evolves at some point. There is nothing new under the sun.

Anyone bought gold at the Dubai souk before? Headed that way in Jan and was thinking of picking up bullions for me and jewelry for the wife. Tips?

Understand your customs obligations/declarations as relates to precious metals. Might be treated like cash or jewelry.

Worn jewelry isn't typically messed with at customs

Traveling with bullion seems like an issue waiting to happen

I'm expecting a bottom no later than early January between $24 and $25 SLV, which equates to about $26-$27 range for spot silver. Then we rise and top sometime next year between $37 and $40 SLV or $39 and $42 spot.

Newbie to this thread - and I'm sure it's been discussed...BUT:
Would a knowledge able poster PLEASE advise, 1.) Typically...the best place to sell Ag. 2.) Is bullion or junk Ag the better investment? I accumulate both. (Junk primarily for its "divisibility" (< 1 oz dime, qtr, half, etc.)

I appreciate reasonable replies and extend my thanks in advance!!!

I'll take a stab at it…

1) I don't sell Ag, I just keep stacking. Avoid selling at a coin shop.

2) Junk silver is 90% Ag (or 40% or even 35% depending on the coin) minus some loss due to wear vs 99.9% for bullion, so bullion is denser with the precious metal (less space to store the same amount of Ag). But, junk silver coins aren't being made any more so their value as collectibles will go up. Honestly, buy whatever is available at the best price - silver is silver. I love Peace Dollars but I also love the different designs I can get with 1oz rounds.

I recently picked up $100 face of 40% Eisenhower dollars from my wife's grandmother. She was basically giving them away to family at Christmas. I traded several family members a 10 dollar bill for their silver Ikes. I already had a bunch of silver-clad Ikes that dad gave to me. They''re not worth much. However, I only had a few of the 40% silver Ikes. Now, I have some and they are pretty nice. I kinda miss the big coin money. I used to get them fairly often when I was a kid mowing yards in the neighborhood.

Not particularly relative but just for info purposes...the best return I ever received selling bulk Au and or Ag was via a "Refiner" in Dallas. They used to pay 92% of current melt value. That was for jewelry I had recovered via metal detecting. Not sure if they are still in business. They would retain Ag/Au coins and would trade or sell them to interested buyers/collectors. If memory serves, I think it was ARA Gold.

ETA - they would remove and return stones from the jewelry.

Last year I asked at our local bank if they had any half dollar rolls of coins. They had one roll of 20 which I bought and by chance it had one silver 1964 highly tarnished, dark coin. I've asked at several local banks we do business at since then but none were in stock until today. The bank had 5 rolls of half dollars and I bought them to check out. The first two rolls were regular 1971 and higher half dollars. The second two rolls were all 1965-1968 40 percent silver coins. In the last roll was a single 1964 silver coin. It's in the middle of the regular coins photo above. I had never found a 40 percent coin before but they are clearly a much lighter edge color than the newer halves. Good find today.

Sweet! I've got about $80 (face value) of 40% half dollars I got from "coin roll hunting". It was a fun activity when the kids were younger. Most banks are pretty wise to the game now so it's harder. A few years ago, I saw a couple old rolls of halves and asked to buy them. The manager came over, took them in back, then brought them back out - he swapped the silver for clad.

What a wild market we are seeing. It's like watching two elephants sitting on opposite ends of a see-saw. At some point, something has gotta give.

Keep stacking!

I got interest in coins in 1959, was in the first grade. There was a tiny store across the street, limited inventory, I bet the place wasn't 20 x 40. One thing he carried was coin collecting supplies such as the Whitman albums. Right after high school, I was working in a plant part time and going to junior college. Every Thursday I would take my check for $44 and go to my bank and cash it, getting four rolls of half dollars and four one dollar bills. I would take them to my apartment, go though the halves, pull out the silver (maybe one or two every two or three weeks, and ones that were part silver. Put the regular half dollars back in the rolls and go deposit them in my account. Accumulated quite a few over the couple of years I did that.

In the "what a coincidence" department, we have just about moved everything out of the old house into the new one. Moving a few odds and ends today and found a box that had about 15 of the Whitman coin albums. Didn't look in any of them but will tonight. My bet is that they are mostly empty. Back when I was filling them, it was an everyday thing to come across silver coins and I would, of course, add any dates/mints that were missing and spend the others. When I ran low on money and needed a comic book or coke, I would take out the most recent dates and spend them, knowing I could replace those at any time.

And speaking of comic books, I found about two dozen, mostly Marvel comics, that my mom had boxed up for me. I did glance through those on the off chance that a certain one was in there. I had a copy of Spider Man #1 that I bought a couple of years after it was issued, found it in a small store in town. Unfortunately, it was not among those in the box. Worth quite a bit more than all the silver coins I collected, lol.

For silver, the 2024 PAMP buffalo rounds are below spot without any rewards. Currently $599.99 for 20-count roll (kitco silver spot is currently $30.61).
