Yep, I'm still here. I did find myself rooting for them tonight, but it's extremely conflicting. I disagree with the trade with every fiber of my being. I'll soon be rooting for them again I'm sure and AD is and has always been a high character guy and he'll be easy to root for. It's cool that he gets to pair up with another UK guy in PJ because that wildcat NBA fraternity is a real one and I'm sure they were good friends already.

Not only did they kick you in the dick over the weekend, but every time Luka goes off for 50, or gets a highlight play, or wins a playoff series, or if he wins a championship you're going to have a whisper in your head that says "coulda been my team." 10 years of punishment ahead of you and it's all acceptable. Not only that, but as currently constructed he's going to be doing those things while the Mavs are struggling to win 30 in 3-4 years and Nico is off at some other team or shoe company.

I don't expect to start following this franchise again until 2031 when they regain their draft picks. The fastest way for me to care again before that is to get a Top 10 pick this year, fire Nico, sell off AD and everyone else except Lively, and get a Top 5 pick next year. So yeah, I hope they lose every game and I'm glad they lost to the Sixers.

It's the biggest sports trade in history and we got ****ed. People are going to talk about it. This isn't a game thread where we only talk about games. People aren't just talking about the trade. They are saying they are glad the Mavs lost to the 76ers in a game they really needed.

I dunno man -- it's being touted as one of the worst trades in sports history, and if it doesn't end up being one of the worst, still easily one of the most impactful. I think anything is in bounds for a good while here.
We traded what was IMO a comparable probability at a title over a 10-12 yr window to just a 2-3 yr window and leveraged our future for at best slightly better chances of winning a ring. Stripping all the Luka love out of it, I just still don't see the biz case for it.

Agreed, but that's yet another element of insanity to it. Because of Luka, this team had attracted a new population of casuals not seen since the peak of the Dirk days, and more. Hell, my mom was watching Mavs games again for the first time since 2011. These owners from a biz sense are ******s. And that's just the US fans. Stack on the international casuals that jumped on….Jesus. Then add to it that we just voluntarily gave the keys to the castle back to an iconic brand that was a shell of themselves….we made the Lakers the Lakers again.

I'm sure people feel like I do, and I'll try not to over dramatize it. I went to games as a kid with the 20 win teams that evolved into following the team religiously for 30 years now. This is my number 1 team along the with the Aggies and more so than the other DFW teams by quite a bit. And I feel like those 30 years are gone in one night, and I don't even know how to process it. This thread is somewhat cathartic to know that I'm not the only one.
I might come around. I'd like to talk roster moves and future, but I can understand completely how that is difficult right now for people

Hey guys, the Thread Police wants us to stop pointing out that the GM ripped the soul out of this franchise and fanbase with arguably the worst trade in sports history. Let's all just accept that and move on. Definitely keep watching the games and rooting for the team that just gave you an emphatic middle finger. Agreed, seeing all the emotion in this thread (and not just on crazier unhinged places like reddit/X/IG) is helping me process better. The Rangers are still a huge part of my life, but baseball relevance and especially success is so hit or miss and so far between stretches. The cowboys are such a broken organization with Jerry getting dumber every year…they'll always be my NFL team, but they're annoying af. I love the Stars, but hockey is just such a distant 4th place behind football, basketball and baseball for me. I too was in the seats in the 90s, mostly just for games where other teams' big stars were in town like Jordan or Penny, Shawn Kemp, etc, but the Mavs were still my team. They've been such a class organization for the whole 21st century until the other night. I'm sure we'll all soon get to where shack is at, but I'm not there yet. It's been 4 days

You have this naive sense that because the team is wearing a jersey you have rooted for years for that the team you're rooting for is still the same entity. You've lost your owner that cares, you have lost the truest killer in the league, you have a GM and owner willing to do that, and you're trying to pretend it's business as usual.
The Mavs literally have the only GM and the only ownership group that would make this trade. Not only did they make the trade, but the GM sat in front of a mic and said he knew you'd be absolutely pissed about it so he made sure no one knew and did it any way. In other words it's not a mutual relationship where they try to win a championship AND respect what you want from the franchise. It's just pure short term self interest on the part of the GM. Near guaranteed rebuild in 4 years. Says he probably won't even be here by then. Toss a grenade into the museum and hopes he can grab the art before it goes off so he can buy a beach house in Miami when Riley retires.
Sports gods gave the Mavericks 20 years of Dirk and in his last year in the league granted them this generations Kobe/Jordan/Bird. It is now a clunky roster with too many resources committed to center (AD, Lively, Gafford). Ironically they keep giving minutes to someone named "Kyler Kelly" because their centers can't stay healthy. If they ever do become healthy and attempt to play a double big lineup then the spacing will be horrendous since no one is a stretch 5.
Speaking of shooting, across the board this isn't a great shooting team. Kyrie is the only shooter over 39% (Klay is close at 38.9%). Otherwise it is average to below average shooting across the board. Not to mention that Kyrie is now the only good shot creator on the whole roster. Dinwiddie is the next closest which tells everyone how bleak things are.
Defensively they might be good around the paint and on the boards, but will struggle on the perimeter. Their best point of attack defender is now probably a trade throw in.
To summarize: Team is over-committed to an injured group of centers who can't shoot, team doesn't have any shooters or playmakers aside from Kyrie, team is a below average from 3-point range, team will be a sieve defending on the perimeter. They are also old and it will only get worse from here. It is 50/50 if they even make the play-in, and that is assuming Kyrie stays healthy.
The fact that some of y'all are taking this as personal as someone banging your wife says more about y'all than it does about me. You aren't the first to use that analogy and won't be the last, I'm sure.
It's just really strange, because it isn't like that at all.
As far as the "entity" changing... I have never cared who owns the Mavs. I don't even care who is on the team really. I'm a Mavs fan because I lived in Dallas the entirety of my sports-conscious life until recently. My loyalty is to the team in Dallas.
