To StephenvilleAg77--Uvalde HS won football state championship in 1972--Vann McElroy graduated from UHS in 1978--was a great high school quarterback, played for John Ferrara at UHS his last two years, starting varsity qb at UHS his sophomore, junior and senior years. John Ferrara was head coach at S.A. Lee, won state championship in 1971 with Tommy Kramer, Richard Osborne--an awesome and legendary coach. Vann was also all-state baseball player his junior and senior year, and UHS won state baseball championship in 1977, Vann was a starting pitcher in1977 (threw 90 mph fastball) on that team, was cleanup hitter, played 3rd base when not pitching...was highly recruited for SWC baseball also....great all-around athlete.

per Wikipedia: He became the first player in NCAA history to rush and pass for over 1,000 yards in a season twice. He broke the NCAA single season rushing record for a quarterback, along with being only the second player in NCAA history to run and pass for 3,000 yards in a career.

His brother Blane was also a decent QB at Air Force.

Before Talbert brothers, there was L G (Long Gone) Dupree. Baylor, then Baltimore Colts (played in same backfield with Johnny Unitas and Alan Ameche when they beat the N Y Giants for the NFL championship). After that, one of first running backs with the Dallas Cowboys.

Santa Fe High School. Don't think we've ever had anyone play D1.

Justin Douglas also walked on to A&M after riding the pine on a 2-8 4A school. It became a big joke at our school about how no one with speed would start and the program was trapped in the 40s.
CJ Cavness was a walk on LB at UH a few years ago.

The best athlete was probably Joe Wylie from the late '60's. Did everything in High School and was the top football recruit in Texas his senior year. Played college ball at Oklahoma, then the Jets and Raiders in the NFL.
