Started ****ing with trans swap this morning, I was fighting bellhousing bolts the last time I worked on it.

First, I managed to get the trans dipstick off of the top pass. side bellhousing bolt and proceed to jump out of the engine bay, slicing my thumb in process. No band-aids in the house, so fck it, paper towel wrapped thumb it is #yolo.

Get back on the top pass bellhousing bolt and break it loose, but it doesn't seem to be coming out. Spins easily by hand, well fck, bolt hole is stripped.

Mid pass. bolt breaks over with ease and is taken out by hand.

Take out bottom pass. bolt...threads of hole come out with it. FCK ME RIGHT!?

Check bottom driver bolt hole...it's stripped as well. Well, that explains why there was no bolt.

I then realize I had forgotten a bolt, the top driver side. Have a hard time finding it, but it is found at last. Wrong, I had found a ground. I run my hand along the bellhousing and find where the bolt should be, but there is no bolt.

So overall, there were 3 missing bellhousing bolts and a confirmed 3 stripped bellhousing bolts holes. There may be 5 stripped bolt holes, I didn't check two of the holes that were missing bolts.

A perfect example of why I don't like others working on my ****. The last person to touch these bolts was an employee of a supposedly reputable transmission shop.

Literally read this whole thread tonight and wow! Great job on the swap and I love the detail you gave with the build. Really has me ready for mine now. Which will be an lm7 5.3 with minor upgrades to due a turbo kit. Polished and ported 243's, cam and lifter kit, injectors, fuel pump, double roller timing set.....ya know the necessary's lol. Only question as of now is.....what was the wiring like and what was the biggest pain in the ass so I know ahead of time. Hoping I'm correct, you kept yours smog legal right? Mine wont be due to our very low Okie standards. And yes unfortunately I do realize for the boost ill need a burnt chip or a full megasquirt system. Cant decide if want to keep the 4l60 or not so that's a tossup. From what ive read you built yours twice with no avail so should i save my a$$ and just go to an 80 right from the start?

I thought you had an engine? Did you blow it up? I can't keep up

Since you're going with boost, I wouldn't mess with the cost of porting/polishing a set of 243's, use that money elsewhere in your build.

I'd say wiring is the biggest headache, I was definitely in over my head when I first did the swap and didn't remove too much of the stock harness which left the engine bay messy once you really started to look. However, adding the standalone harness took no time.

Mine wasn't 100% smog legal, but was good enough that it still passed the sniffer. I don't plan on running cats, but if the engine is running well it should still pass the sniffer.

You won't be burning a chip, but you will be flashing the PCM. Should be plenty of guys who can do this in OK.

For N/A builds, a properly built 4L60e will hold. Anything over a 100 shot or any amount of boost, I'd go 4L80e hands down.

I do have an engine, but it's a 5.3. Going 6.0 because...well because #RACETRUCK.

Serious question. Will an LS marry up to a 4spd? I may have an old friend, 85 K20, stumble back into my life - and it just gave up the Target 350 to go in someone else's truck - so I'm spending imaginary $ on an imaginary project at this point.

Yep, it's just a matter of using the correct adapters.
Drewmeister

The LS still uses the SBC bolt pattern, right? No adapter needed then.
Silvy

AG
Very similar pattern but not 100%, the LS has a top center bellhousing bolt hole the SBC doesn't have and the SBC has a bolt hole on the upper passenger side the LS doesn't have.

The proper adapters will be for the crank. In order to run my OE LT 4L60e, I needed a crankshaft spacer, flat flexplate (dished is standard), and longer bolts to compensate for the spacer.

Not shown is the 4L80e

The fun will be starting shortly. Going to disassemble a bit to make sure all is well, order new rings and gap them suitably for nitrous, valvetrain goodies, new gaskets/seals, etc.

Done for the night

Engine is a '02 LQ9 w/ 92k miles out of an Escalade. The LQ9 is identical to the LQ4 that's found in the 2500 trucks, except that it has flat top pistons so a tad higher compression ratio.

I have a set of 243 heads to slap on which will then put me around 11.1:1.

Are you going to dingleberry the cylinders? I have an '05 5.3 (guy said it had 145k on it) sitting in my garage along with a brand new summit 5.3 block and I can't decide what I want to do. I've contemplated selling it all for a running 6.0. An LS of some form or fashion is going into my '91 Silverado Stepside at some point in 2017 as that's my New Year's resolution!

Not going to hone the cylinders at all, I'm just going to gap the stock rings.

I've been in contact with a few companies for cams and all recommended cams larger than I initially planned on running. I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but looks like I'm going to go with a 233/240 @ .050", .627"/.607", 112+2

TC is a 245mm (9.5") 3200-3400 stall, should definitely be at 3400 N/A and I expect a couple hundred more on the squeeze
Silvy

Regarding selling it all for a 6.0, it all depends on your goals. You can definitely make a fun N/A build with a 5.3, but don't fear the stall.

I paid $1,175 delivered for this engine from LKQ Online.

I'm going to tempt fate with the NV3500 5 speed for the initial install. A tremec 6 speed will take its place eventually. Boost (turbo) will come later as well, but I'm not sure how much later, hence my quandry as more cubes is always better for NA.
