I picked up a '02 5.3 with ~45K miles for $500.

Plans include:

-A longggggg ways down the road I may throw some better heads on it that have some work done to them. Still too broke for that though

Finally the reasons of getting rid of the old engine:
-16 year old technology sucks.
-The 350 TBI is a reliable boat anchor.
-I'm tired of 13 MPG even when I'm babying the skinny pedal.
-I've thrown too much money at the 350 and I've only seen minimal gains.
-Looking to surprise some people with this old slow truck.

Right now I'm stocking up on parts, I probably won't get the actual engine in till early summer when I'm out of school.

I'll update this thread as I update the build thread on my truck forum.

I'm on FSC, LS1Truck, and performancetrucks...I don't like GMFS at all. It's a total anarchy...mods don't do jack and I'm not a fan of having the front end of a truck 3" higher than the rear. That seems to be the thing to do on GMFS.

FSC is what I started on...extremely active. I have little over 2,000 posts and been there not quite two years. I'm on LS1Truck and pt.net for the performance aspects...FSC doesn't have many guys that have 10 or 9 second trucks, FSC seems to be about the exterior aspects of the truck. I spend most of my time bs'ing in the whatever section though lmao

You ask why I don't go 6.0...the answer is simple. Money. It costs more to buy and consumes a little bit more gas...this truck is gonna be my daily for a long time. If I ever feel it's not enough power I may throw a turbo on it, I love the sound of a turbo spooling up rool:

I started on FSC and GMFS around the same time, got tired of the bull---- on FSC at the time, this was years ago and have since remained on GMFS.

It seemed there were alot of smartas*** on GMFS to me...now I only reply to threads if the OP hasn't made up his mind on what he's doing, asking a serious question that the search button wouldn't answer easily orrrrrr if a poster is being a total dumba**.

Like yesterday a guy said his cut coils rode better than my Hotchkis coils...I read the thread after I get outta class turns out he called a mod a "fu***** *****" got a ten day ban then emailed another mod cussing him out...so now he's banned for life.

Sometimes I just love trolling :biggrin:

The 350 has been around since the civil war. Are the go fast parts for it not cheap? I would think that parts for the 5.3L are going to be more expensive than a 350.

To build a 350 would be a tad bit cheaper in the short run but in the long run the gas prices would kill me. If I were to build up my 350 I'd have to get new heads cause TBI heads are the worst flowing heads GM ever made...great for real low end torque but nothing else. The cam is extremely small, the fuel injection is basically a fancy carb and isn't efficient at all. To keep it passing inspections I'd have to keep the TBI which means I have to keep the OBDI computer...the closest tuner I've found that could tune my truck is in Oklahoma. So to get real power I'd have to go carbed and say goodbye to any gas mileage I had before.

The TBI 5.7 stock has 210 HP and 300 ft-lb...the 5.3 has 290 HP and 340 ft-lb stock. You start throwing a couple of go fast goodies at a LS engine and they respond much better.

Hahaha its more than just the gas its about teh powa!!! I can't wait to start getting it all together. In the meantime here is a link to my friends build thread doing the same thing and a youtube vid if you don't care about the build just about the end result.

I can think of half a dozen shops in Texas that can tune that setup. I assume you are talking about driving up to take it to Ed Wright in OK?

There's half a dozen shops in Houston alone that could tune it, I'm taking it to Jake Brown at Brownspeed cause I'm getting a $100 discount from him. When I had thoughts of getting a L31 block and swapping the TBI over I would've taken it to Ed. I've talked to him over the phone once and was extremely helpful.

And no Moody Gardens golf course was hiring.

From those pictures it looks like you got it from a salvage yard that had already pulled the engine. Please tell me you didn't fall for the old "this here motor came out of ~10 year old truck/van that done got wrecked after only 45,000 miles" BS.

They said they've had that engine for a while just cause the only time they sell a 5.3 is when someone like me who is doing a swap shows up. I looked at all the 5.3's out of the twenty they had and the one that looked to be in the best condition was this one.

Even if the miles aren't true I'm not that worried about it cause these things run forever.

Little update...I finally started ordering parts.

Motor mounts for the swap are in the mail and later on today I'm ordering a transmission adapter so I can hook my LT style 4L60E to the 5.3.

Go with a 4L80E or a 6L, the 60's through 70's don't hold enough power. Not that you'll make that much with the 5.3, but in the future you evidently want to boost the horses/torque, so, planning ahead = WINNING!

Ditto. I drove 40,000 miles with a malfunctioning torque converter on my 4L80E and while it complained, it kept running.

I know they don't hold as much power but I like the 4L60E better...they rob less power and you get slightly better MPG.

I'm gonna do my best to take it easy on the trans till I get a cam and stall. When I do that I plan on making the trans as tough as possible.

I've also changed my plan for a wiring harness/tune.

I plan on buying a standalone harness and a PCM with EGR and VAT's tuned out from psiconversion.

When I get my exhaust hooked up I'm going to take my truck over to Wheatley and get a wideband tune.

Crappy pic but last weekend I got my headers, fuel line fittings, some AN hose, and a fuel pump that will be able to support 60 PSI instead of my stock fuel pump that puts out a staggering 13 PSI.

Next purchase will be an A/C bracket and some ceramic coating on the headers done by mustang6tee8.

With the 5.3, you need 45-50 psi or it probably won't turn over. 60psi is best.
