Honestly the better plan is keeping the kids w a fairly level skill level seperate from the less experienced parents. Kids will progress better w/o parents present.

It's awfully enjoyable to do and fairly easy to learn the basics and ski greens. You're there, with nothing else planned. Try a day of lessons and see.

I'm seeing 8 or so inches forecasted for this Thursday - Saturday at Telluride. Fingers crossed.

I guess you missed the part where I do have things planned for me.

My wife and I didn't have the opportunity to go skiing growning up. We are realistic about what we can and can't do from an active lifestyle due to our knees and general athletic abilities. We have no problem bumming around the resort, hanging out with each other all day, and watching the kids enjoy themselves.

We think it is important to expose our kids to life long activities like skiing. They did 2 days last year and really enjoyed it. This year they are going to do 4 days. Hopefully they enjoy it and want to continue learning.

Cool,,awesome of you to give them the opportunity. For me it is like getting to choose your own custom roller coaster ride every time downhill but in spectacular scenery. It's almost pure joy, and I am glad they are getting that experience. Nice work!

I can respect that, and honestly that's pretty awesome that you're willing to invest the time money and effort so your kids can enjoy a pretty kick ass sport. I thank my folks all the time for starting me young. Skiing has been my life long passion

what you're doing is cool and nobody can disagree with you (without looking like a fool).

I will add this for food for thought. I am now 50. I grew up playing the typical sports and have had minor knee injuries. To the point it's already likely I'll have replacements in the future. I have one kid who is 16. I did not learn to ski until I went to A&M and went with friends for spring break. Doing greens does not require anything very athletic and is easy on the body.

We took my son skiing for the first time about 7 years ago. It was my first time skiing since college!! It was like riding a bike. Did exactly what y'all did with lessons for kiddo. Only on the last half day did I take him up on the mountain with me. Went again 2 years ago, he took one day refresher lesson and then we skied the rest of the time. We are now set to go again in a few weeks and this time its no lessons and just us skiing.

All that said, it's so awesome being on the mountain and then it's 100000x more being up there with your kid. You get to see what they have learned and can do. More importantly they get to SHOW you what they can do and they love it. The memories of that, even if you do it just one time, are priceless!!

Heck now that they are already ahead of you in learning you could do a one day lesson and at the end of it have the kids take you up and have them coach you doing your first green and enjoying that experience with them.

We just booked our spring break to Northstar in the Lake Tahoe area. Seems to be a pretty decent area and less costly than some other areas we were looking at. Anyone been there?

If the current forecast holds, I might be skiing down my driveway on Sunday morning. It's only 40' elevation gain over about 1200' though.

Looks like my trip early next week to Vail might actually work out decently if we can get this storm at the end of the week to produce.

I'll be there with family spring break. I have family from NoCal that have a place there. If you have any questions prior to your trip, feel free to get back to me.

Went out on the boat today and kept up with our 10 year old while the younger two did lessons. Wishing we had more powder in case catch an edge but played it safe, one more day tomorrow. Definitely feel like I'm getting too old to do this!

I've got nothing to add but sunsets on the west coast. We're on the verge of the lowest tide on record for January.

Off to Bend this weekend to let the wife spa and daughter/myself ski.

I skinned to Illumination Rock on Hood last Friday. I do it semi-often at sunset and ski down to T-Line Lodge to meet the fam. I really enjoy it and it's a chance to just let all the **** going on roll off. Nothing but heavy breathing for two hours and the world by head-lamp on the way down. Snapped this with my fancy camera at the bottom. I love the alpine. Everything in life can be solved with some good music pounding in headphones, in a place you love, doing a hard thing. It really is that simple.

6th miscarriage for us in a row. Just damn. No answers in any medical corner. But I'm skiing with my daughter this weekend. Let's go.

Man sorry to hear that, that's rough. My wife had a similar # when trying for a second kid after our oldest. We eventually wound up with perfectly healthy twin boys. But it took us ~ 3 years.

Very sorry to hear that. We dealt with a similar issue - not to that extreme - but it all ended well. Glad you have such a great perspective and beautiful way to deal with it.

Spoke to SP at Vail yesterday about the back bowls and was told the following:

They will open IF we catch the average snowfall through the end of January PLUS two feet. Avg snowfall for January is about 12 inches a week. So, they need about 36 inches to open before Feb. Meaning if they get 12 this weekend, they're still short the 2 ft if that's all that falls before Feb 1. Best base scenario Is 12 this weekend and then a 20-30 inch rollar in early feb. if they arent open by Presidents day, they won't open all season barring a March Miracle as PT patrol contracts start to roll off mid march.

Not setting up that way but lets pray.

I mean, I never buy protection plans on rental equipment and so far so good- knock on wood, but honestly, I was setting you up to explain yourself. What % of customers actually buy it? How often are there actually claims? How many of the claims end up getting denied because the customer damaged or lost equipment for reasons not covered by the policy? Do you recommend all of your customers buy those protection plans or does it depend for example people who cruise on groomers vs people who bomb through the trees, jumps, and barrel through mogul runs? Do these insurance policies end up causing more heartache with customer disputes or the opposite? Big revenue stream for the shop and totally worth it? Do you have underwriters or brokers that actually pay you for replacement equipment instead of the customers and are they even harder to deal with or easier?

Wow that's crazy. When is the last time they didn't open the back bowls?

Selfishly this is the first year in the last 5 I didn't get the Epic Local pass, so timing worked out unfortunately well for me to not have Vail access.

It depends on conditions and how you ski and how well you can absorb the loss. I don't judge because everyone has a different life scenario. Im just glad theyre skiing and when a crash does happen that they don't get hurt.

2018 maybe. Im sure they didn't open BS that year but maybe a limited open on 21 and 5 etc. Total close out? I can't remember one since college.

The last year the back bowls were believed to not open was 76-77 era. There was a lean year in the 80s that they opened in February. Besides that latest opening was around Jan 20 in 18. Records prior to 2000 are scattered.

If there's snow they will open…it's not so much the just the amount but the how and when. If there's 2ft out of the storm this weekend (unlikely)they'll pop. 6" at a time
Between sun doesn't get there. The issues are the mazes and runouts, need snow down low to build ramps, mazes and create egress.
