Pretty much.

They actually only are producing the base from the effluent, which is a smart workaround. There are a whole lot more regulations when the public comes in contact with reuse effluent so it was likely a way to save on permitting.

Gear question: looking for a value or affordable set of ski goggles that works reasonably well in most or all conditions. Swappable is a plus but one lens that gets undone well in most conditions is fine. I seem to recall on my last trip in overcast conditions on the shade I was struggling with seeing the terrain

I love my smith 4D mags but I also get them 1/2 off. Never worn them but have heard great reviews of glades as well.

I like Smith. Any of the models that you can swap lenses on will come with 2 different lenses. The best Lena I've had for overcast was a yellow tint with no mirror.

I also get Smith stuff at discount so may not be as affordable as what you're looking for.

I got these two seasons ago. During the summer the band basically melted onto my helmet over the summer. I talked to smith and they sent me a brand new pair. Great customer service. And my goggles are in doors this summer.

We usually don't ski during Christmas break, haven't done so since I was a little kid, but will be up in the Blackhawk/Central City/Rollinsville area from 26th-4th hosting my wife's family for a getaway.

Y'all think it's even worth me, wife, 10yo and 7yo skiing? We have season passes at Loveland and were thinking 31, 1, 2, and 3rd just to get out of the cabin and stretch our legs.

I always remembered 26th-31st was a madhouse.

Thoughts?

For any of you guys that do your own waxing, what would you recommend for a general, all-around wax, and also suggestions on what I should have on hand for my daughter's race skis?

Those days are a madhouse as well. At least it is in Park City. That said. I'd rather be on a packed mountain than stuck inside.

Maybe avoid the early rush and hit the mountain about 1pm?

Mountain at 1pm only works on Christmas from 12/24 - first weekend of January.

Lifts will grow from 8:30 -12:00 drop from 12:00 - 1:00 and pick back up if not worse after lunch for the after lunch apres crowd.

We never ski a 70 mountain on blackout days.

Purple Purl wax is best for all weather.

Then mix in some graphite wax (black). I usually do like 80/20 purple to black.

Keep a little blue on hand for the COLD COLD Days.

For racing wax it really depends on the conditions and ski level.

For goggles you really want a good chromatic set of lenses. You want a low LTV every day - such as the Smith green everyday mirror with an LTV range somewhere from like 15-25% Then you want another lens that's like a rose plum or rose storm that's a high LTV with range something like a 55-65%

Another option is a photochromatic which carries across an LTV Range - I've been Sporting the Photo Pro Blue Mirror and its great. It's a 15-55% and really steps up and parties. It's Not My Everyday set of goggles but if I only was buying one lens it would be my stash spot.

Single lens you're probs best w something photochromatic

Set of lenses do a chromapop high and low LTV

The Stash XL black Everyday green mirror comes w the rose storm. Thats a solid set for like $160 no pro deal.

If you don't ski sub 5 degrees you don't need the green.

Freeship code for no shipping on 75+

Buy a brick of each and you're good for the season and maybe next depending on how often you wax.

We usually use about 15g/ski set/board so a brick is 30 Clean straight. If you're mixing 80/20 then you'll get 38 out of the base purple/graphite combo and then as many Blue or green day combos w graphite as you need to cover. For $90 for the season or 2, se vale la pena.

You'll save alot more buying the 16oz vs. 2.4oz. 16 oz is $30 and the 2.4 oz is $12.

I skied Breck 12/31/23 and 1/1/25 and both days were surprisingly uncrowded

Found some lower/mid range price smith goggles on steep and cheap with swappable lenses, they come with two different ones in the box to start, I figure I can get any others I need to get a good spread over the conditions.

Smith has a whole gambit of range.

You DONT want the 2x lenses if they arent Smith Chromapop.

If the lenses are Chromapop then yeah snag it.

I've got pro deals on Swix and Toko. I'll have to play around and see what I'm able to get the best deal on.

I may grab the Purl universal and then some smaller bricks of race wax from one of the others.

Squad XL are some of my favs. Reg Squad if you don't want the larger lens.

I'm a relative amateur but I got a decent for purpose iron and wax and tune kit and watched a ton of YouTube videos and figured it out. It takes some practice to drip enough wax to get a smooth even and not wasteful wax coat that is ready to be scraped. Then scraping and brushing adequately. I also taught myself to use a ptex drip stick to fix a couple of gouges, kind of fun. I think it would take some practice before the application and brushing is done so well that the exact brand of wax is noticeable but I imagine if you don't get the best thing for the conditions you would start to notice the difference after some practice.

I do find tuning an enjoyable thing to spend a little time on, but it would get to be a bit of drudgery in a shop environment until you get really good at if and can hammer it out fast and right the first time every time.

I'm mostly just trying to protect the bases as keep my skis in good condition as my budget is limited.

First : HELLA props on diving into the ski game head first. I love when people have pride in their gear and putting themselves in a space to have an amazing ski experience. Honestly, that's awesome and makes me hella stoked.

Wait that said, I personally would never advise a novie or intermediate or even most expert skiers to tune their own skis. Tuning is the only place you can accidently give your skis a abortion.

You put the wrong edge on a ski and your ski is trashed for ever. It's not a fixable problem. You can get away with a bad pattern or base because You can grind it out if you have enough base, but if you angle your edge wrong. Skis toast.

I tell most people that unless you have the experience, your best bet is to get a diamond bevel and NEVER try to set the edge. Just use the diamond bevel and extra soft gummy to remove any burs and remove the oxidization around the toes.

Also wear gloves or you'll give you're self a nice gash that needs stiches or cut off a finger entierly.

Love me some black out drunk PTEX Work.

You know you're a ski nerd when start buying colored PTEX to track your lines haha. We have green blue clear black and gold jaja. Key to PTEX is letting it cool to the point it holds (usually a little less clean gash holds the PTEX better) but not soo long that you can't remove the excess material. It's a delicate balance.

Get a good dedicated bass turd file and file card to go with your tuning kit for knocking ptex repairs flat, and sharpen your scraper between each tune. A freshly sharpened scraper makes scraping go so much faster. (I mostly use my edge guide for sharpening scrapers lol)
MouthBQ98
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, haven't messed with the bevel on the edges yet. Probably leave that to a shop. Unfortunately I haven't been able to ski enough to even get much edge wear on my two sets, so there hasn't been the need. All I've done with edges is gently file down a couple of small burrs to even and use a one of those soft stones to buff off a few rust spots at the end of the season. I am pretty crafty and mechanically inclined but I also know these are relatively thin bases and metal edges snd once you take it off, you can't put it back.

Has anyone used a Sena Snowtalk2? I'm looking at getting sometime for Bluetooth listening, but if I can pay extra and have a viable comm service for my wife or kid, I might be inclined to go that route instead.
Bayou City

We have the Cardo PackTalk and Love them. They're a little pricer than the Talk 2. The cardo has a little better audio for music and features like crash alert. Overall the Talk 2 Work great and have the same range (~1 mile clear). The ONLY place we don't get full coverage is the back bowls to the front bowls in Vail. If everyone is front side they work great, if everyone is back bowls they work great. If people are split up, they're patchy,

Oddly enough… just bought a pair of the Snowtalk 2s for $180. Supposed to be delivered tomorrow.

I'd rather have the Cardo, but they're more than twice the price. I think the Cardos are supposed to have better audio and better range. I'm not really interested in using them for music/bluetooth pairing since I generally just use my AirPods for that. These are basically just (hopefully) a good way for my daughter and I to talk while skiing together.

I'll run some tests on them this weekend and let you know my thoughts.

Looks like Breck Ski Patrol and Vail are going at it. Hopefully it doesn't turn into Park City.

Read Here

Quote:

The Breckenridge ski patrol union is hopeful that an agreement will be reached between them and Vail Resorts by the end of November.
Patrollers at Breckenridge voted to unionize back in May 2021. As is common in any unionization effort, a vote was held with the union winning by a single vote, 43-42. By December of 2021, the union ratified its very first contract with Vail Resorts.
The first contract had a heavy focus on wage increases, employee housing, parking for patrollers, education and training requirements. The first contract lasted for two years before the union and Vail Resorts agreed upon a second contract in December of 2023.
