Just did and my batteries were dead. Replaced and up and running now.

I figured they just needed replacing.
Ok, so you're saying that the snake is not poisonous?

Definitely poisonous

Definitely not poisonous. Highly venomous though.

You're better than this...

You must not know me very well.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Yeah, he was pretty pissed too and buzzing. There was a big log pile nearby so figured that's where he lived and he was just out by the road getting some sun. We were at the in-laws cabin in upstate PA and driving up the shale road to go back to the cabin and we almost ran over him with the truck so he wasn't too happy.

My F-I-L does a wildlife calendar every year with animals he catches on the game cams he places around the property and he's been wanting to get a good pic of a rattler so we stopped and he got his big camera with zoom lens out and snapped some pics while I took some with my phone.

I've seen a few of these "black phase" timber rattlers up there but have yet to see a good "yellow phase" one.
I think they get darker with age.

I'd really like a pair of timber ratt boots, but they aren't as common as diamondback. Hell even Mexican pointy head-on rattler boots are more common than timber.

Well, there are a bunch of these timber rattlers up there on my in-laws mountain in PA. (I think they might be protected species though). A surveyor from a gas company was on the property a couple years ago looking at sites for a gas well and he said it was the "snaky-ist" mountain up there he'd ever been on. Its a minor miracle with all the yahoo in-laws up there running around that they've never had anyone get bit.

It's really not. A rattlesnake's first instinct is not to bite; it is to remain still or get away. Biting is usually a last resort.

Or, at least in my experience with rattlers.

Yeah, but there are a lot of "hey, hold my beer" types in my wife's family up there.

My experience has been the same as your's with most venemous (and non-venemous) snakes. And I read somewhere that timber rattlers are actually even more docile than most rattlers and are less prone to striking and biting.

LOL, I was told by the lead t-sip Herpetologist that most people get bitten in situations like that. I don't think it's far from the truth.

The VAST majority of people who present to the ER with a venomous snake bite are intoxicated. They either stumble into the bushes drunk and step on one (usually on the way to relieve themselves) or purposefully mess with a snake while drunk.

Edit: Also worth noting that the male to female ratio on snake bite victims is about 9:1 and most of those men are relatively young (<30).

A work friend of mine just returned to work after being bitten on the hand by a copperhead that was camped out inside some plastic water bottles inside his house. He had previously poked a hole in the plastic wrapping, was getting out a bottle near dusk and got tagged in the hand. I've got photos of his hand in various states of swelling and eventual skin slough after four vials of antivenom, and the snake that got him. He's just been back to work for a couple of weeks but still has skin loss and nerve damage in his middle finger. He's a CRNA, won't affect his work long term. Just a freak thing, the copperhead must have crawled in when he had the water stored in his garage.
Edit: he's a big outdoorsman, and he's been stung by wasps and hornets and scorpions but he said this one was much more painful. He said the snake was a "teenager". Pics in a separate thread below because I'm old and just figured out how to post from iPhone

Just click on the actual picture in the imgur album and then right click to copy the picture itself and not the album link...

On android, it is the same except you have to copy the image using the share image icon

onto the clipboard and then paste into the snake ID thread on TexAgs. I don't know how iphone works.

Can't figure out how to make that symbol smaller

Thanks again. That is actually what I did with my iPhone but it just posted the link. Is this an unusual color phase for the king snake? It was beautifully colored
Badace52

They have a broad array of color patterns, but that one is particularly boldly patterned. I couldn't tell you if that is a normal color pattern for the area, 12fmane would be the right guy to answer that question.

Where was this?

North Georgia. The water bottles were inside his house at the top of his stairs when he got tagged. He says he usually punches a hole in the plastic so he can easily retrieve a water bottle when he wants one. This time he reached in during the dark. He got to the hospital pretty quickly and got 4 units of antivenom , but circulation to extremities is always tenuous. And, yes, he said it hurt like hell.

Yikes. I've got water stored the same way in my garage. Afraid more of brown recluse or black widow never thought about a copperhead chilling out in there. That thing looks like Smaug the Dragon waiting in there.

Maybe, but the shape looks wrong to me, a picture from the side would really help. That is the other possibility and why I said probably in the first comment.

Edit: It also looks to have some patterning around the mouth you see in common kingsnakes. However, I don't know that I've ever seen one that boldly patterned in Texas. Further west definitely, but not sure about in Texas. I would have to defer to the real expert 12f...

Was there any red/orange on the side of the snake or lighter patches on the side within the black stripes?
