Hard to tell from the video but nothing jumped out to me, that said water moccasin. I'm also watching on mobile so zoom is limited.

I think I read on here, body below the water equals water snake.

Not water moccasins. You would see more than just heads.

Saw two blotched water snakes but showed the kids with me instead of pulling out my phone. Both about 3 feet long. Nice thing about our neighborhood is you can almost always find a snake if you know what to look for

I'm ignorant about snakes and learning more about them because of this thread. What would you see if they were moccasins?

Moccasins float on top of the water. In fact, 12f mane or badace correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all vipers float on top of the water. So all venomous snakes in Texas except coral snakes.

All of those are Nerodia aka water snakes. Hard to tell what species based on that video, but they definitely are not cottonmouths. In other words harmless and not venomous.

This is generally true, but actually has more to do with the wider body shape of most vipers. They can and sometimes do swim under the water and younger/thinner specimens don't float as well as the larger, fatter adults.

do alot of snakes that arent nerodia swim on top the water? During the floods, i saw a long and slender reddish snake hydroplaning faster than any snake id ever seen. I assumed it was a coachwhip or type of racer.

Most non Nerodia snakes are not very comfortable in the water and try to stay on top of it if they can. Exceptions are some of the more semiaquatic species like ribbon and garter snakes. They often swim mostly submerged or entirely underwater to escape predators.

Dog got tagged by a copperhead on the back foot this morning. Looks like I missed one.

At least, I hope it was just a copperhead.

How's the pup?

Ok. It swelled up and seeped blood around the bite a while, but the swelling stopped at the hock, and it's almost back to normal now. She's walking on it and not limping. She weathered it much better than when she got bit on the nose.

It just looks that way because her hands are smaller. Or at least that is what my wife tells me.

I caught a little fella in one of MouthBQ98's minnow traps along the side of the house. Rough earth snake?

With that coloration and looking at that tail, I would almost think coachwhip or young racer of some sort. But I am sure the real experts will set me straight.

Coachwhip, just a small one.

He was probably either after the whiptail lizard or regurgitated it.

I didn't even consider that it might be a juvenile coachwhip. He was in the trap with the dead lizard. We have a ton of lizards around the house.

This is Lavaca County by the way. (I realized I failed to meet the posting criteria by not including the location in my original post.)

Coachwhips love to eat whiptail lizards. They'll eat almost anything they can catch, but they seem to prefer eating other reptiles.

I totally thought it was a coachwhip, but am still nervous about my IDing. If I knew how to put in gifs there would totally be a "winning" gif here!

To me, it is always that long slender tip to the tail and the sand color along with the braided appearance to the scales that tips me off. That is what made me think Coachwhip.

Not my picture. Some disagreement in a FB group as to what this is. I think it's a coachwhip. What say you, experts?
