Not a snake, but I always thought legless lizards were cool. Unfortunately, they have a very difficult time on asphalt or concrete. If they get caught on the street, they're almost immobile.

Hopefully this works better.

Why did you kill it?

ETA: I believe that's a legless lizard.

That was my picture. I didn't kill it. I found it while on a walk. I assume it was hit by a car. As I said, legless lizards can't move well on asphalt so they're very vulnerable when they get on a road. In fact, I'd venture to say some folks go out of their way to run them over thinking they're snakes sadly.

I'm not sure I'll ever figure these snakes out because I see no difference between the above and one of the cotton mouths that have the darker pigmentation.

Look at the lower jaw.

You can clearly see stripes? It's a non venomous water snake/

As mentioned, I refer to the vertical bars/stripes as 'lip stitches.' That's a dead give away that it's a water snake. In addition, the mouth was not 'cotton white' when it was striking at us.

Head shape not a good method to ID venomous/non venomous as most snakes can make themselves appear venomous/triangular.

Also look at the shape of the tails. Notice that the water snake's tail is long and slowly tapers from the body, where the water moccasin has a fatter body that quickly tapers into a skinny tail.

On the jobsite in College Station this morning. The workers killed it before I had a chance to intervene.

Dog got tagged by a copperhead on the back foot this morning. Looks like I missed one.

At least, I hope it was just a copperhead.

Yeah I was pretty bummed about it. I've seen a few specks around here but never one of these.

On orders of AgMom, was cleaning up our pump room (room off of boat barn that has our water well pump and pressure tank and area for our mower) last week and started moving stuff around, heard some movement and saw a large blackish tail disappear under our pressure tank.

In an effort to "leave and let live" I made a lot of noise banging on things for a few minutes, went up to the house for a glass of water and came back in about 10 minutes. I again made a lot of noise and poked around the pressure tank with a shovel and nothing moved, have not seen the visitor again and hope not to.

90% + or - sure that it was a water snake but am not one to take chances, hope it stays away.

If you have an ankle biter, send it inside first. If it comes back out, no snake. If it doesn't, then at least you have solved one problem.

Is blotched the same as plain bellied? That's what everyone calls them in the FB snake ID group.

Mandeville, LA (Northshore Lake Pontchartrain). We have ditches throughout the neighborhood. They're fairly common, but somewhat difficult to see in cover. I've unfortunately found most of them with a weedeater after the damage has been done.

Blotched, yellow bellied, plain bellied, red bellied, and copper bellied water snakes are all Nerodia erythrogaster. Just different subspecies. However, I would argue the distinction between yellow bellied and blotched throughout most of Texas has more to to with age of the snake than anythng else. Young yellow bellied water snakes in the Eastern part of their range look like blotched water snakes when young. As you move further west (especially in the hill country) the blotched water snake adults tend to keep their blotching rather than turning black like they do in the east.

Can I respond to two different post with one response, if not, Stive this is for you also:

When I go down this evening I will take Fen and Daisy with me, one way or the other I will know if it is still in the pump room -

Come to think of it, I better let the girls check AgMom's paddle boat while I am down at the water!

Took this a while ago while canoeing the lower Colorado. I was trying to get a new hat band but he said no.
Most of the cottonmouths I've seen over the years are darkened or don't really show the patterns that clearly (except for a few juveniles I've come across).
Yeah he was real pretty, would have made a nice hat band.

The open white mouth with fangs also helps with ID!

Someone help me out. Is this a Plain Bellied Water Snake? A friend spotted today at the Austin Greenbelt. She said it had rat feet sticking out of its mouth when they found it.
