And one of the bigger ones my brother says he has come across. He estimates 6-7 range. From pics, I would believe around 6 foot.

Nope. I was looking for native snakes at a spot I frequent and walked up to this:

I was able to get the snake to a licensed pro who still has it. It is from a unique locality so there was hope the original owner could be tracked down and brought to light but no luck yet.

I thought it was fake walking up to it until it immediately starting hissing (puffing). Pretty fortunate that it was someone like me to find it and not a curious kid.

What went through your head once you realized it wasn't fake?
"That's a ****ing puff adder!?"

Exactly as I thought. Anyone else read that in Steve Erwin's voice?

Friend just sent me this pic. Says it was taken "at some lake near Houston". It looks like a Great plains rat snake to me, but it is almost too big and that is pretty far east, though right on the edge of their range. Can anybody confirm/dispute? 12f? Only other possibility I can think of is prairie kingsnake but it doesn't look like one to me. I guess it could be an incredibly lightly patterned texas rat snake but doesnt look like that to me either.

It's a Texas ratsnake and not really out of the ordinary, color-wise, in my opinion.

I totally understand that sentiment, but I love seeing snakes in the wild, especially venomous ones. Seeing that big black mamba standing up looking around then REALLY quickly getting up into the tree was one of the highlights of my last trip to Africa for me. I have no interest in handling them, and I'm certainly no 12 f mane, but I love looking at this thread from time to time. I'm glad we have a separate thread for it. Kudos to staff or 12f mane or whomever got it going!

And, seriously, I'll make Hognose have a new home. My mom lives right outside of Kerrville and I'll be visiting her and other family.
ok zoo....let's make contact and work a plan

Post here again and I'll leave some contact info.
sorry for delay, traveling...have not located this guy a second time. Without knowing where he is hanging out he will be tough/impossible to capture. If I can find him I'll send out a bat signal

Kudos to that guy. Not that I ever want to learn these skills, but maybe 12f Mane or someone else could educate this forum on how they learned to handle venomous snakes. I view that job the same way I see proctology, urology, and podiatry - I'm glad someone else is doing it, because if it were left up to me it might not get done.
