Supposedly we were into talks with the Texans about Brandin Cooks but it didn't happen. Would be interesting to see OBJ here.
The deal was shut down prior to both teams agreeing on which draft pick(s) the Cowboys send. Considering he gave up Cooper for a 4th rounder... I'm sure he would be embarrassed handing over more for Cooks.

The NFC East has the most combined wins (23) through week 8 than any other division since 2002 (realignment).
Highest winning percentage for a division halfway into the season since the merger in 1974 is what I heard on the radio this morning.

Might have the year wrong but that is insane considering we were the NFC Least for a while.

The division collectively doesn't have all that difficult of schedules. I still also very much think the Giants are going to stumble. Saquon isn't going to hold up to the workload he's getting

Hill waived. I thought he was finally somewhat playing up to his potential. What a wasted draft pick that was.

Surprising. He will be picked up... he played well enough to be on a roster somewhere.

Only talk I've heard regarding the DTs is Quinn not being happy with how they play their assignments. I had heard this more with regards to Gallimore though. As a summary it's not that these guys aren't making plays, because Hill was definitely showing up on film.... but if they can't be trusted to play their assignment then the coach can't use them.

If we are just looking at his ability as a WR (and ignoring the rumors that Cooper simply wore out his welcome in more ways than one), I wonder if Jerry would like a redo on the Cooper trade?

It sure felt like they targeted Gregory as their re-sign priority and felt Cooper and Collins were expendable to help with the cap. Knowing how the Gregory deal fell apart (which ended up being a good deal for us) I wonder if we hold onto Coop knowing that the cap savings weren't really going to be used for anybody else.

Cooper's contract became pretty middle of the market after Christian Kirk signed his deal. 100 percent if you're Dallas you want that trade back. Typical move for this front office though

Name one or two other similar moves. If anything this was an atypical move for the Cowboys.

If anything we hold on to guys for way to long and then they become a burden. We got rid of Cooper at the right time.

In hindsight it looks like we might have been able to get more for him. Problem was he didn't have a great season last year.

Meanwhile, with Hill being cut Hopefully that is the last of the Merinelli Picks.

I'm saying typical in that they make moves that show they're two steps behind, as evidenced by Kirk's contract basically resetting the market for WRs going forward. You could have just let Cooper walk once his deal is done or get rid of him a couple years from now. Dude is 28. You could get 2-3 more years of good production out of him

I'll say it. I dont think this team is better with Cooper. I agree they could have waited. But I didn't see anyone predicting the WR market to blow up like that.

The reason I would have liked a move for someone like DJ Moore is I'm not a big fan, at this point, of giving CD a huge deal north of $25m per year. I would prefer to let him walk after his 5th year but without a stud, they may be forced to give him that second deal. That makes me really nervous.

I think most would agree with you, that right now giving CD a contract like that would be foolish. But he's still got two years left. The only real issue with that is Dak's contract is also up again in two years…

I'm sorta glad we didn't give up a 2nd + for Cooks. We are drafting too well to give up a 2nd rounder for a 29 year old WR. Cooks has also been traded around so much in his career... outside of his natural talent, how much are you really going to get out of a hired gun? I'm not upset that we passed considering the cost.

I suppose OBJ is still a possibility. We'll see what happens.

Yeah, I'm with you. I don't like Cooks that much.

The only guy would have loved would have been DJ Moore, but that would have been tough to make happen.

Again, I am not keen on giving that big second contract to CD. It worries me that Jerry and Stephen will have another Zeke moment because they will see them not resigning him as some sort of failure of a pick on their part.

I don't think we have to worry about CD. The fact that we own him for 1 more year plus the 5th year option if we choose gives us plenty of time. After that we'll have the franchise tag if we still want to avoid the long term deal. He tries anything funny (like Zeke did) and he will be forfeiting hundreds of thousands per week.

Zeke was a different situation... at that time he was the best RB in the NFL and our offense 100% ran through him. Smart move by him and his agent because we absolutely ran him hard and the tread started coming off those tires soon after.

CD doesn't have near that kind of leverage. He will have to play nice and play by the rules of the CBA. If he wants to avoid the 5th year option and get that long term deal, he'll have to give us a hometown discount.

Based on the Texans thread, sounds like Cooks is throwing a fit over there. Maybe he wanted out and now he's mad that Houston wouldn't be reasonable in the negotiations.

Wouldn't that be something if it soured enough thay they just released him.

Cooks 1000% wanted to be released.

Sounds like it came down to the Cowboys and the Rams in a deal for Cooks. The sticking point was that the Texans would not eat any of the 2023 18m guaranteed salary to facilitate a trade. If the Fisher report is true, and a 2nd plus was on the table, think Houston should have tried to make it work.

Houston won't release him unless they can get out of his salary. Which maybe they can?

Cooks needs to state on social media that he hates Jews. Immediate release! Then state on social media that he meant to type he hates jaws. He finds orca to be a more satisfying movie. And then he can sign with any team he wants and all will be forgiven

Texans did pretty good against Philly considering they were missing their 2 best wide receivers.

They were cruising tonight, but it would be silly to think they can keep up the same pace the second half of the season. But it would be tough for Dallas too. Pretty sure the Giants and Skins have a few more losses in them.

Looking ahead to the 2023 draft this becomes one of most important in recent history.

If the Cowboys can draft lights out they can set themselves up to be an upper echelon team in the NFC for the next 6-8 years. If they have a 2017 type of draft they will most likely continue to be an 8-10 win team.

In the past I've complained that the Cowboys NFC title game drought is almost solely due to the lack of defensive superstars over the past 20 years.
Micah Parsons is the first true superstar the Cowboys have had on defense since DeMarcus Ware. 10 years is too long of a drought to not have a superstar defensive player.

If they are able to draft another defensive player of Trevon Diggs, or Parsons caliber then this team could be set on that side of the ball for the next 5 years. A great defense allows your offense time to rebuild.

What position would you draft in the first 3 rounds if you were the Cowboys front office?

It's almost always a "best player available" approach for me. That's what landed Parsons and CD Lamb. They just need to continue to do a good job evaluating. I do like that with Mcarthy there has been a refocusing on getting bigger and strong in the trenches.

In my experience as a cowboys fan, if you're banking on this team/front office "nailing" a draft, you're going to be pretty disappointed

yeah I've been pretty happy with their draft picks. Taco aside, their 1st rounders have been good. Its the second round guys they tend to miss on more often than not. They usually have several guys contribute from later rounds too.

And they seem to do very well with undrafted free agents. They are all over the roster and start.

Taco was a massive massive miss. Hill And Jaylon smith sucked too. Other than that I'm completely satisfied.
