Nice.

If you have any interest in watching this, I highly recommend reading the book upon which it is based.

Obviously there will be CGI in this. I fully expect TA negative reactions to that, but how else would one make a movie like this? So long as they don't have Bf109s performing impossible maneuvers as in Red Tails, or Star Wars-y effects as in the recent version of Midway.

Looks like a good mix of practical sets and effects and some CGI for the larger events. Similar to what they did for the Catch-22 series, which I thought was really underrated.

It'll be interesting to see how this one goes over. How many folks give it a chance, and how it shapes public opinion of bombing campaigns.

Those bombing missions killed a lot of civilians. The suffering in Gaza is a rounding error compared to the axis and allied bombing campaigns of WWII. How they address that in this show could be influential on public opinion if enough folks watch it.
Thanks and gig'em

I think it's predictable what the response will be from certain sectors of our population.

Those people can stick it up their ass for all I care.

Spoiler alert - the Allied bombing campaigns killed lots of people. We did not possess "smart" bombs so what we were actually doing was dropping high explosives encased in iron on enemy populations. It was indiscriminate. It was ugly, but it was necessary.

Yeah the proper response should be "thank God we have the technology to avoid doing this sort of thing in the modern age."

Agreed. I've stopped even considering them.

We should always question the morality of it just so that we remain moral.

at least with BOB they were advancing and crushing the Germans all the time

this is going to be brutal simply watching Americans crash and burn and knock down a few Messerschmitt BF109s or ****e-Wolf 190s

Nazis knew how to build aircraft
So did we!

Nobody cares. Work Harder

Red Tails were in Italy and this series was originally supposed to be about the 8th Air Force B-17s over western Europe

Tuskeegee Airmen flew 1578 combat missions, 1267 for the Twelfth Air Force; 311 for the Fifteenth Air Force

I've seen before that from 1939 to 1945, 1000 people died per hour due to the war. It is really hard to fathom now, but it was the ultimate scale of industrialized warfare.

My assumption is he is talking about the black actors in the trailer.

They showed a fighter painted like those of the Red Tails once in the trailer as well.

Yeah, they did. It looks like they have probably shoehorned the Red Tails into this despite well known facts of where those guys actually operated from (not England). I have nothing but respect for what those guys did, but I hope this does not devolve into a love fest for the Red Tails.

I'm hoping they try to do right by the history and maybe have included some scenes set elsewhere around the theatre to show what else is going on with air warfare. Looks like there's some scenes in POW camps as well.

Well if the characters take a service path at all like my grandfather, there's a good chance they end up in Italy towards the end. (Where the red tails apparently were stationed)

I think we can pump the brakes about worrying the red tails are going to be featured too much.

I've never wanted a show to be as good as I want this to be. The book is a must read, I have no idea how they are going to fit it into a show properly. The stories my grandfather told about flying his P-51 on escort duty were exhilarating and terrifying, moreso when I got older and actually contemplated what death meant. He went down bombing Bremen late 44 and spent the rest of the war in a German camp. He was the softest and kindest man later in life when I knew him, but I bet he was razor sharp buzz saw up there gunning down nazis.

That generation was truly something else. I know I've mentioned it before, but my great Uncle was a sergeant that served out in Alaska in the Aleutian Islands campaign against the Japanese and then was transferred to Europe after that. He ended up captured during the Bulge and spent the final 5 months bouncing around eastern POW camps before the Russians "liberated" them.

Incredibly gentle man, but was hard when he needed to be. I was too young to really appreciate his stories when he was alive.

I think it was on this site several years ago when someone told me rather bluntly that there was never an Army Air Corps, that it was always the Army Air Force. So glad to see someone else who understands this nuance in the history of what would eventually become the USAF.

My granddad flew the P51 in the 359th. Never heard any stories from him but we found some pictures of death camps in his attic, presumably taken after they had landed and found abandoned camps. They were the small Polaroid type and I can understand why he never spoke of his time as a fighter pilot. Stacks of half burned bodies everywhere.

Are there any books about the 359th, or any resources that I can find to see what missions he specifically flew?
