I havent played the game yet since I havent owned a playstation since PS2.

Last of Us Part 1 is coming out March 3rd for PC, where I plan to play it.

For fans of the series, should I watch the show first or play the game first and then binge it? I know very little about the game/story.
Either way you will know what happened whether you are playing the game or watching.

So play the game, but only when you are blackout drunk. Then you will only remember what happened if you are blackout drunk again.

I suggest being patient for a couple of months and playing the game first.

I think you'll enjoy it that much more since you don't know the story.

And avoid spoilers. Don't let your curiosity get the best of you.

The season finale is scheduled for March 12. I honestly don't know how anyone would be able to avoid spoilers while waiting for the game to drop, much less complete it, before that day. Best of luck to you, friend.

Lol... that's a strange question to ask. What does being a fan of the series have anything to do with whether you would rather experience the story for the first time through a series or a game? Especially after only 1 episode has been released.

Are you guys saying the Last of Us II is better than the original? I only played the first one, which I did love. Sounds like I may need to download the second game.

For reference, my favorite games of all time are probably Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy 7.

Gameplay is way more fun in the 2nd game. The story depends on who you ask

I would say it's right up there as it's equal, not better. It's darker than the original. The graphics and gameplay all take a step up and the story is fantastic.

That's a tough question to answer, I think it's in the eye of the beholder. The second one is probably the better game of the two, it cranks everything up to 11. It's dark, intense, and emotional, it's more upsetting than the first game for sure. There's a point where the game turns and I pretty much had to stop playing it for about a week. I think the first game might be more enjoyable, I could see the second game turning some people completely off because of some events that go down in it. If you love the first game you should definitely play the second game.

Agree with most of these comments, although I do think it is better than the first. I'm probably in the minority.

The scale is larger (probably 2x the size of the first game), the story is darker, and the violence/gore is even more intense. It is too dark for some.

I think Last of Us 2 is better. Even though I almost broke my controller and tv while playing it. The emotional landscape of the story is better than anything I've seen in a movie in recent memory.

Agreed, for me, TLOU2 is undoubtedly the better game and story, and I had already thought TLOU 1 was one of the greatest video games of all time.

Nevertheless, TLOU 2 is a bit more polarizing, so there will be many that strongly disagree with the opinion that it's better.

TLOU2 is also visually improved imo over TLOU1.

Humblebrag incoming to show how much more I've enjoyed TLOU2 after thoroughly loving the first… I've spent 240 hours in TLOU2, including 5 playthroughs with one of those on grounded mode (no perma death though). I'll play through it another time in 2023.

TLOU1 I've got 165 hours, with 3 playthroughs and a lot of that time on the Factions multiplayer mode when that was live.

I already know I'm going to play way too much of the new multiplayer mode when it comes out.

TLOU2 held a really special in my heart because the game came out as I was in the middle of moving away from Seattle.

Weirdly right after I moved to Seattle 7 years earlier (give or take) was when I played infamous second son. Strange book ends for sure.

I had problems with TLOU2 because of you know what. I felt it was a betrayal of everything they had built with the great story in TLOU. I know I'm not alone. So much emotional investment treated . . . Not as well as they could have.

I actually hated playing one of the characters. You know. When you identify with a 1st person character in a game, you are more invested in keeping them safe. I wanted that character to get what's coming. It was difficult ultimately to ever get past the "thing", and those who've played it know what I'm talking about.

After things went the way they did, I only really enjoyed playing the other character who had earned the way into my heart.

I know that's not an original take, but TLOU ( version 1) trumps TLOU2 based on emotional satisfaction at the end.

Just my take. But I know I'm not alone. Still.

I would suggest adding spoiler tags or just deleting your comment, as there is a lot that can be inferred from your post. If you are going to discuss the games without spoiler tags, it should be kept as vague as possible.

Glad I'm seeing unanimously positive reviews by both gamers and non-gamers. I loved the first episode, and it crushed me as well. The girl who played Sarah was just perfect and had the hardest job in the first episode, make you fall in love with her, and then rip your heart out. The entire sequence in the truck was damn near identical to the game, shockingly close.

For the non-gamers it's not a beat for beat remake, there are changes that were made but they make sense. I thought they amped up the horrific nature of the zombies. A big one is in the game the disease is spread by spores, but the producers didn't want to have gas masks on the actors faces, a good decision.

I thought they did a good job of showing how bleak the world is, being in a city is effectively being imprisoned. Had a very Soviet feel to it, not hard for the show runner of Chernobyl to pull off.

I thought casting was basically perfect, we'll done.

I'm glad they're really reinforcing how rare and impactful music is. Closing the episode with 'Never Let Me Down Again" was so good, one of my favorite Depeche Mode songs. The game is almost devoid of music so when you hear it, you notice it.

There was a question about whether season one will be the whole first game, I don't think so. The game is too big to do that without sacrificing some of the story IMO. I also think they'll need to add to the story of some of the characters we're going to meet. I think they'll cover about 75-80% of the first game.

Off to a great start.

Her name is Nico Parker and she's Thandiwe Newton's daughter in real life. Definitely an HBO family.

Had no idea. This is great to know. I thought the girl who played Sarah was stunningly beautiful (not in the Joe Biden creepy sorta way). When she grows up, she's gonna have 100 suitors. Plus, great talent.

But she nailed playing Sarah. Great job by that young lady. Made us care till the episode ended! Big things ahead for her.

I get that take.

But I guess it's a cost/benefit conundrum.

Do you want to throw out what you built to seem gritty and real?

Or do you want to keep building what you have to keep your enraptured audience connected?

I am not one to always choose predictably safe, but this is something they could have tried 2 games later.

Respect your opinion, though.

Just my opinion, but I'll take revenge-focused, spiteful, hateful Ellie over TLOU1 snarky yet innocent Ellie any day. Makes her combat and kills that much more badass in TLOU2. When she gets her first WLF kills, it's incredible

I was on the no game player thread needed side, but this kind of conversation, even though it's being respectfully vague, that makes me think we do need a separate game player thread. Especially as word of mouth about the show builds.

I can see both ways. Would be nice and safer for non gamers, but also as one that has played the games, it would be annoying to have two threads to check.

DO NOT CLICK BELOW IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED BOTH.

As far as the TLOU2 discussion, I can see people liking the first better and vice versa. They are neck and neck for me.

Personally when it switched who you were playing I thought "Wait, I am picking up items? And I have an inventory? Does this mean I am really playing as her?" Then when it said "Day 1" or "Tuesday" or whatever, implying you will have to play for the same three day arc you just played as Ellie I was pissed and annoyed. However that quickly changed.

TLOU is so amazing because of the emotional/moral conflict. The end is great because it takes someone you love and have agreed with and turns him into someone you don't anymore. TLOU2 would have been too "clean" and boring if it was just a revenge story. Showing you Abby and forcing you to play as her shows you and reminds you that Joel wasn't exactly the good guy at the end of TLOU. If anything you start to feel like Abby has MORE to be sympathetic for. Her dad was just trying to save the world and got killed for it.

In the end I was an emotional mess playing as Abby and hunting down Ellie in that theater. I was literally talking to the TV "No. No. NO! Do NOT make me kill her! No!!!" I was fully invested. Then the lengths Ellie goes to to hunt her back down and get closure is epic. The brutality of the ending is gut wrenching.

I can see people who wanted a straight revenge story, but I loved how it showed both sides and made you conflicted. It stayed true to the original because it put you in the same morel conundrum of not knowing what to feel about the characters actions. The journey was amazing.
