I had the Misty Mountain song from AUJ come up on my spotify while taking my girls home from school the other day. My Star Wars superfan was interested in what it was about so we've started watching the first Hobbit movie (she's 8) to see if she likes the stories and such before contemplating watching LOTR. We've watched two 30 minute chunks and for all the bashing I've given the Hobbit films, so far it's been a lot of fun to watch it with her. I've read that book enough times to be able to tell her what's going on without giving too much away and if you view it as more of a kids' movie - the dwarves' antics with the plates, Gandalf bonking his head, Bilbo passing out from fright - it's very watchable. I'm interested what she thinks of Gollum, she has never seen any reference to him that I can think of, but she generally likes scary things (loves Jaws and The Meg).

I have been thinking lately about when the best time it would be to begin reading The Hobbit to my son and daughter. They are 6 and soon to be 5 respectively. I was thinking 7 or 8 might be the best age to begin.
