We watched it over Christmas. It's fantastic. It's also scary as hell how much it correlates to what is happening in America right now. Wife and I literally looked at one another multiple times during movie with looks of "that is happening right now!"

Several parallels bud.

Pandemic, totalitarian stuff resulting from it, etc.

I'm sure you can find some stuff to apply to both sides if you want to be balanced.

I agree that we're in unprecedented times (at least according to every commercial voice over for the past year+), on both sides of the isle. But in reality, we're not anywhere close to V for Vendetta territory. That's fever dream hyperbole. I couldn't stand Trump, but even at his worse, in the heart of the pandemic, I didn't think the country was headed down that path. And Biden's bumbling incompetency absolutely warrants all kinds of critique, but again, V for Vendetta this ain't.

That said, all this talk has definitely made me want to watch the movie again, as it's been a while.

In the meantime, Colorado/A&M is about to kick off, so I'll leave everyone with this gem...

I remember that it's one of the movies I can count on one hand that I was thisclose to walking out of, because it was so horrible.

It's an objectively well made movie. Personally, I think it's pretty damn great. I get not being into the subject matter, but regardless, in no reality is it "horrible" or walk-out worthy.

Agreed, it was at the very least well made and an intriguing watch.

Huh. Had no idea they didn't direct V for Vendetta.

Still, I feel like they should get a lion's share of the credit for writing, producing, and for the director having been an AD on The Matrix trilogy.

Agreed. It *feels* like a Wachowskis movie for sure, and it sounds like they were basically on set everyday.

It was for me. One of the few movies that I absolutely loathed. Being a technically "well-made" movie doesn't make up for my dislike of the script or acting.

I won't try and convince anyone who does like it. To each their own. But I hated this movie.

I'm sorry. I have no intention of derailing a thread about the Matrix 4. Not my intention at all. Forget I said anything.

Carry on.....

Hope this gets us back on track:

Rewatched The Matrix. It's been probably 15 years since I last saw it. It's still great.

Nice. Rewatched it a couple nights ago as well. Still so damn good.

I have a question for the thread, though…

WHY did Morpheus believe Neo was the one? This really stood out to me this go-around, and as far as I could tell, it's never really addressed. From the jump, Morpheus is all-in on Neo being the one, but seemingly zero evidence is presented to the audience, pre-Neo's awakening at the end of act one, as to why Morpheus has so much faith in this particular person. And we never really get an explanation in the rest of the movie either. Sure, Neo's really good at downloading fight programs to his mind, his "neurokinetics are off the chart," then he's "the one," and and that's that. But there's no explanation as to what evidence Morpheus saw in Neo that tipped him off to how he knew Neo would be so special. In his search for for the one, when he finally came across Neo, what about this unassuming computer programmer/hacker dude stopped Morpheus in his tracks, to the point where he goes, "THIS is guy!"?

Am I missing something?

Or could the movie have potentially used even a single line explaining what Morpheus initially saw in him?

That's a great point. What struck me about the movie was how basic and how few sets there actually were in the movie.

Today we have so much green screen time building worlds and depth but it's not always a good thing.
TCTTS

Yeah, it's definitely more streamlined and to-the-point than I remember it being.

Honestly, it *almost* made me feel guilty for ragging on Rey for basically being a fully-formed Force-user from the jump and being special just because. Because this viewing had that same general vibe, where Neo's "the one"… just because. Of course, we eventually come to learn *why* in the sequel, when the Architect gives his spiel, but before the events of the first movie, Morpheus obviously doesn't know that yet. So what, exactly, does he see in Neo pre-awakening?

Regardless, the pacing is so good, the world is so interesting, and the overall mystery is so engaging that it doesn't matter nearly as much here. Still, I was just curious if I happened to miss an explanation.

Neo and Rey both were "born" with astonishing natural ability, but I don't think that's most people's issue with Rey.

Star Wars as a franchise had already established that training was necessary to unlock your natural talent. Rey was breaking established rules by essentially showing up with all sorts of crazy nuanced skills.

Neo spent most of the movie training and frequently getting beaten. It wasn't until the very end that he "put it all together". Even as a prophesied messiah, Neo did 20x more (on screen) to earn his ability than Rey did.

An example. Both of them bring someone back to life. Star Wars had pretty much established that you can't do that. Apparently the Sith could "prevent people from dying", although even that was never shown and could easily have been a lie. When Luke asks Yoda, the response is "Strong am I with the force, but not that strong". That is to prevent death in the first place, not to bring someone back.

Neo does it, but his universe had never ruled it out, and the way the universe is constructed it makes sense that someone who can read all the code can also alter all the code.

Anakin is the only human who can even race a pod at all. No one else can even fly one. And he wins the Boonta Eve Race against a collection of the best pod racers on what appears to be a professional tour.

Luke flies a spaceship into a huge combat zone with zero hours on that type of spaceship and presumably never having even flow anything outside of Tatooine's atmosphere. And he uses his natural talent to kill several TIEs, elude Vader and his elite squadron long enough for Han to shoot them off his back, and shoot torpedoes into a tiny target that no one else could hit.

I see that as the force enchanting a skill the Luke or Anakin already have. They knew how to pilot before. Access to the force enchanced their reaction times, senses, intuition, etc to be a better pilot.

But we've been shown that Jedi powers like lifting heavy stuff, light sabers, etc. require training.

I mean, yes and no.

It was more streamlined with fewer locations, but probably 3/4 of that film is green screen.

Piloting seems like a much more instinctive thing than, say, breaking into a trained Smith's mind and reading his thoughts like Rey did to Kylo Ren after precisely 0 minutes of training. Luke had been flying for years and did at least get a bit of training from Ben Kenobi. It's pretty common in the old legends stories that force sensitive people are identified because they have some skill that they are really good because they are unknowingly tapping into their force ability. That's not the same as being able to punk a Sith at multiple things right out of the gate.

I didn't really mean to turn this into "here's what's wrong with the sequel trilogy", my point is actually more that The Matrix did a really good of showing the hero train, get beat up, fail several times, but keep getting back up until he broke through. It was earned, probably more than anything in Star Wars movie canon.

I haven't watched The Matrix in a few years, and really Ive seen it so many times that when I rewatch it Im sure I don't actually pay attention to a third of it since I just 'remember' it already.

Didn't Morpheus' crew kind of joke about him finding "another" The One? For some reason I had the impression that this wasn't the first time they tested someone out.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

The only thing I remember along those lines was when the crew kept saying, "No one makes their first jump." But they could just as easily have been talking about themselves as opposed to other potential "the ones" Morpheus had recruited. Other than that, I don't remember any dialogue that hinted at that, though there very well could have been.
