One night I was up late watching college football during winter and it was a very cold night. I got up and walked into the kitchen, all the lights were off except for the tv in the living room, and I saw a man standing in my backyard smiling and staring through a kitchen window. I immediately flipped on the back porch lights to illuminate the backyard and realized he was not standing outside, I was seeing his reflection in the window, he was behind me. You probably don't want to hear the rest.

I've woken up numerous times over the last 5-6 months to noises coming from downstairs around 6-7 AM...at first I try to go back to sleep thinking it was my imagination...but then it just keeps happening...eventually I go downstairs and let Penny outside to use the bathroom

I saw an Indian in full war paint sitting on a horse just off the road on the Devils backbone near canyon lake. It was visible as I drove by. I looked in the rear view mirror and it was gone. Look up the devils backbone if you don't know what happened there. It was definitely a ghost.

Not myself, but 10 something years after it happened my brother told us that he saw our great grandmother standing at the foot of his bed the night she passed away. Still gives me chills thinking about it.

My grandparents lived in a 250 yr old home outside of Boston. It was always weird to be there alone at night or stay up after they went to bed as a kid.

This is too many pages to read, but ghosts aren't real.

They say that demonic/paranormal activity thrives starting a 3 am. Anyone ever had a strain of nights where you wake up at the same time?

I was walking upstairs after hours at Buffalo Billiards which is catty-corner to The Driskill Hotel in Austin (both notorious for being haunted). I stopped for a second because I heard a commotion downstairs. Employees were doing clean up. So I turned back to see what happened. Got downstairs and peered out and it turned out to be nothing. All of a sudden I felt a chill go by me which I split second figured was a draft or something. I leaned down to pick up bar towel on the floor when I saw something out of the corner of my eye. I turned and looked up and saw the back of a man taking a left off the top the stairs on to the second floor. Figuring one of the employees had just past me while staring at the earlier commotion I rolled up stairs to see if they needed any help. I get up there and he was no where to be found. I noticed he was wearing older clothes from a different period. Not dressed up. Just tattered. I ran downstairs to ask if anyone had just been upstairs even though I knew no one could have past me. They said no. It was only 3 employees plus me. They asked if I saw their ghost and I turned white. It's very common to see a gentleman dressed in turn of the century peasant attire. People have seen him for years they said. He's not mean or anything. Just appears to go about his business almost as if he once worked there. It really shook me up for awhile until I gained perspective. Incidentally, there is a picture of 6th st. In the mid to late 1800's and the building that buffalo billiards is in was the only one on the street. If I can find it I will post it.

If a ghost encounter with a non-disruptive entity is that scary... I would hate to experience it with an evil one.

While walking around to the driver side door of dad's pickup, my sister saw a man in a cowboy hat on top of a horse that was in a full gallop towards the pickup truck. Yes, a full f***ing gallop.

OH NO! Not a 'full gallop'!!!!!

Seriously, what did it matter how fast the horse was going? If he was 'trotting', does that mean it was less ghostier??

I have issues of people around me thinking I am talking to them. Damned mimics!!

Seriously it happens. someone else in the house will come up to me and ask what I wanted. They all swear they would hear me normal volume asking for help. Sometimes in a nonchalant way and sometimes almost pleading. I think they are all insane. but there are a lot of incidents....like close to 40 or 50 different people throughout my life. Started when I was a little kid.

Oh and shadow people. they exist.

Maybe it IS me!?!?!

Only read the last few pages, but I've noticed that there are a few posters in particular who are not only deeply offended that some people may believe in ghosts, but are downright angry about it.

Get a f-ing grip.

In the last 2 weeks both TF and I have seen TW walking in the bedroom towards the bathroom. I saw her at about 3 am one night, and TF saw her while sitting in the living room last weekend.

A silhouette - distinctly her. We weren't scared, just sort of "at peace" that she was there.

quote:
Millions of people are interested in ghosts, and a 2005 Gallup poll found that 37 percent of Americans believe in haunted houses and nearly half believe in ghosts.
quote:
While amateur ghost hunters like to imagine themselves on the cutting edge of ghost research, they are really engaging in what folklorists call ostension, or legend tripping. It's basically a form of playacting in which people "act out" a legend, often involving ghosts or supernatural elements. In his book "Aliens, Ghosts, and Cults: Legends We Live" (University Press of Mississippi, 2003) folklorist Bill Ellis points out that ghost hunters themselves often take the search seriously and "venture out to challenge supernatural beings, confront them in consciously dramatized form, then return to safety. ... The stated purpose of such activities is not entertainment but a sincere effort to test and define boundaries of the 'real' world.'"
If ghosts are real, and are some sort of as-yet-unknown energy or entity, then their existence will (like all other scientific discoveries) be verified by scientists through controlled experiments not by weekend ghost hunters wandering around abandoned houses in the dark late at night with cameras and flashlights.
In the end (and despite mountains of ambiguous photos, sounds and videos), the evidence for ghosts is no better today than it was a year ago, a decade ago or a century ago. There are two possible reasons for the failure of ghost hunters to find good evidence. The first is that ghosts don't exist, and that reports of ghosts can be explained by psychology, misperceptions, mistakes and hoaxes. The second option is that ghosts do exist, but that ghost hunters are simply incompetent. Ultimately, ghost hunting is not about the evidence (if it was, the search would have been abandoned long ago). Instead, it's about having fun with friends, telling stories, and the enjoyment of pretending to be searching the edge of the unknown. After all, everyone loves a good ghost story
