On the road.
No Mary.
No Jeanette.
A challenge to field a full team.
Lose doubles.
Nicole has a rare off day.
Go down 3-0 quickly.

How do we respond? Epic comeback for a 4-3 win. One of our best ever.

That was a championship mindset and will pay dividends all year long.

Side note: Mary, we love you, but please don't miss another match. The next decade will be full of pro tournaments.

Just saw Daria's matchpoint! Nicole the first to hug her! So thrilled for Daria!

That's the big take away. We were down 3-0. Crazy. Won 4 singles matches in a row. The key was taking care of the match points when we had them. That needed to go our way and it did. Great win by the entire team! Congrats to the coaches!

Must make the 30 minutes to get from the parking garage on MLK Drive back to 35 a lot more sweeter

To debate this further, I'm not sure how Joffe is getting away with his current singles lineup. That will be flagged/debated during the NCAAs. Pursoo should be playing around 3 or 4.

Someone who deserves a massive shoutout is coach Tommy. He did an excellent job with Lulu and Lex today, both competitive matches and swinging back and forth at times. He was really good at recognizing adjustments that need to be made and how to play for those two girls in crucial times. As the 3rd assistant coach he isn't going to get a lot of praise, but 2 out of our 4 points came from his courts.

All our coaches put on a masterclass coaching clinic today. With the cards they were dealt, they out coached Joffee and texas by far.

Love to read this! Lu was down 5-2 in that second set I believe. She kept plugging away and whatever he was telling her was working!

Mark enjoyed this one. Special win today. A little surprised he didn't mention doing it without Mary as well.

Aggies Storm Back for 4-3 Win at Texas

Head coach Mark Weaver
On the team's fight…
"Just incredible heart and fight by our group. That was a story book ending there. I've been doing this a long time, 26 years of coaching, this one is definitely up there at the top. To be down 3-0, to come into Austin and beat one of the best teams in the nation what a team effort. The girls really pulled through.

On the team stepping up to the challenge…
"My big challenge for them today was about how tough can we be. How gritty can we be and how much can we fight today, and that's what it ultimately came down to. I'm so proud of them, they just played like champions today. It was all about playing with your heart today, and this one was truly one for the ages. If you've never seen a college tennis match, you should have seen that one. Just truly some of the most exciting, exhilarating competition you'll ever see in any sport."

Junior Daria Smetannikov
On clinching the match…

"It was unreal, I knew that I was the final match, and it was a surreal feeling. It's my first time ever clinching and to do it against Texas at their home court, it was unreal. I felt the momentum swinging back for sure. When I saw Mia won, Lexington won and Lucciana was coming back, I was like we can do this right now."

no need to rub salt in the wound. i'm sure his disagreement with the decision was communicated, however she's still me one who he has a relationship with and be they both cavalier. Mark is above pettiness or potentially passive aggressive comments. We here can voice our disappointment and it doesn't do anything, however Mark doesn't have that luxury. We are talking about a 21 year old, she's still growing.

I didn't mean in a negative way.

Mary's the GOAT and has earned the right to do whatever she wants. For all we know, they may have made an agreement before she came back for her senior year.

I simply meant acknowledging how impressive it was to do this without the GOAT.

But you make a good point. If there is any chance she takes it in a negative way, avoid it.

That is a very good point. And a little too mature for a texaga post ;-)

But we don't know about what all has been communicated or if there were any agreements in place for pro tournaments to take priority (pure speculation, no inside info)

And the same goes for recruiting. We don't know everything that was in works or what angles were being played after Liv left us hanging. I think Mark has more than earned the benefit of the doubt that he is doing everything humanly possible to continue to build our team to be the best.

He can likely justify it. Based on UTR and he moved her up to #5 against Michigan after she beat Lex in their first loss to us (that was fun to write). She got beaten decisively 4 and 1.

Shout out to superstar trainer Sho Aria. He put Luciana's foot back together after she injured it. Boyer had some great shots in her doubles match. In singles she played against the tu player who beat Reed indoors. Perez not only played 2 tie-breakers, each tie-breaker went extra. Great confidence boost for the whole team.

Good call. Lulu was so clutch. I'm pretty sure she was hooked on a point in that second breaker, but she maintained composure and delivered. It was a big win. Bowers beat Mia in the first match.

I just want to remind everyone on Lex's background: She's a top recruit from Florida. She has played and lulu have probably played the least indoor tennis in the team. She will be so much better outdoors.

If Mark decides to go with Jeanette when/if she gets fully healthy then we roll with that.
i feel vindicated today

Agree but winning the NCAA final indoors and then making the ITA finals isn't too shabby!

On the Daria front: her game is going to fall when she plays lesser competition, it's just what happens. But when we play elite teams that are deep in the 5 spot, her true level is going to shine. I think we are in a position where we should win matches with doubles and any other singles combination that takes pressure off daria, but when we really need the 5 spot, when the level rises on the other side of the net she will come through.
and here

I didn't realize that Lulu was hurt. Makes it even more impressive. It was hard to tell on the live stream, but there were a couple of questionable calls that were upheld by the ref, and one that was overturned.

Luciana hurt her right foot at the start of Set 2. The announcer on the Cracked Racquets stream was wondering if she would be able to continue, and I was worried too. The announcer talked about a medical timeout and I was wondering if there was a time limit on that. Luciana was back in 5 minutes.

I'm not sure Mary even played today in Spring (or hasn't played as of 10 pm CT) at this W50.

After 2 or 3 days off for weather with no indoor option, today they had good weather but apparently the surface was only playable on one court and they didn't get that ready until late, late afternoon.

A few comments on tennis forums:

Quote:

it's now 53 degrees with no precipitation. There is no excuse for not playing today

Quote:

WTF is going on? This is the biggest disaster of an ITF I've seen in a long time

Quote:

I can't believe we are reaching the end of a sunday, what should be the day of the final, with not even R2 completed and they still want to continue this tourney like i've never seen anything quite like it
Quote:

Omg it still hasn't started, what time does it get dark in Texas at this time of year?

Quote:

So they are finally playing but why only one match

Quote:

Then why the hell are they not playing Make it make sense...

The Day After

Lots of great comments above and thanks to those who posted tweets! I do not do any of the 'social networking' stuff so only way I get them.

Still amazed at all that happened yesterday. Needing four points won the first set in four of the singles matches. Hey, we can do it. It will be tough but we really CAN do it! As mentioned above, I think Lulu was down 2-5 in the second set but she was playing tough - she can do it, she can really win the second set, too, I thought. By this time it was Lulu and Daria so having only two screens to watch made it easier. Both were really battling it out. This is some great tennis, I was thinking, some really great tennis! Each point won made me think 'we CAN do this, we CAN pull it out' - and they did. They actually did it! Still pinching myself this morning.

Coaches doing their coaching stuff, staff taking care of Lulu, Aggie fans there cheering them on, the 'finished' players cheering each other on, what an amazing match! If anyone has a link to the match, say on Cracked Racquets, please post it. Would love to watch it again.

Oh, I put the video of Daria closing it out on 1/4 speed. Stopped it when the ball hit the ground. Looks like it hit about 1" out. I could not tell from the on court camera when I was watching live but I knew it was ruled out by their reaction! As fans we were all excited but imagine their thoughts and feelings at that time. Excitement, shock, surprise, happiness, joy, etc. And it showed!

And the very clear pic of the team showing horns down in front of the easily readable sip scoreboard - priceless!

Of note, Georgia defeats South Carolina 6-1. Dasha lost to Hamner at line 1. Auburn defeats Florida 5-2, losing lines 1 and 2 in singles.

The replay of the SEC Crosscourt Cast is on SEC Network +. They had video and commentary on a bunch of SEC matches yesterday and the video is normally up for at least a few days. I watched the winning shot in all 4 of our singles wins last night. It sounded like they had a summary show also but did not see it.
We have a treasure in Mark Weaver. He hired 2 new assistants and you can see they seem to have great relationships with the players and Mark trusts them to coach.

From all accounts, Texas was heavily favored and should have won this match with Mary electing to play a pro event, Jeanette's injury and Texas playing a home match. The conversations here would have been far more entertaining and nasty towards what transpired if the team had lost. Hoping that another miracle doesn't have to happen to beat a Texas, Georgia or just about everyone in the SEC this season.

What do you mean nasty? Lol

The usuals here love Aggie tennis, but there is no denying that this team is short a scholarship player. Boyer did her job and contributed, but would have to think it could have been more competitive if we didn't have to play a walkon

Agree. Passionate fans help the program.

We want the best for the players, coaches, and the fans. Even hall of fame coaches make mistakes . Doesn't mean we don't support them 100%.

  • Frustrated that Mark didn't fill the scholarship? Yes. Change my opinion of him? No.
  • Frustrated that Mary wasn't there? Yes. Change my opinion of her? No.
  • Even more proud of the team for overcoming those challenges yesterday with a historic win? Yes.
