How much do you need?

Option 3

I'm going to make 5 pounds I think. That'd be $40. The raw ingredients are less than $2. Crystalize it hard, and keep it vacuum packed in the freezer.

Thanks for that first source! The gold is hidden within:

Quote:

DAP provides Nitrogen for mailard reactions (non enzymatic browning) to occur. These occur between ~270F and ~320F. Another source of nitrogen is ammonium bicarbonate. It is a leaven used by professional bakers.

As DAP breaks down around ~270F it separates into two molecules of ammonium and dehydrate-phosphoric acid. So it provides both the nitrogen for browning and the acid for inversion.

That's the exact info I needed.

Well then that's definitely worth it.

yep.. lots of smart dudes on that board that like to dissect the nitty gritty of why and how. Always a great resource.

Got everything picked up and the system is in good order. Probably tonight I'll fire it up with water and PBW to clean it and to figure out how much dead space is in it. I ordered about $100 in camlocks and tubing yesterday. His current setup works fine but it involves screwing and unscrewing SS pipe and adding caps on and off. Not a big deal but I figure that pipe will be hot and hard to mess with. Going to run one hose into the pump to move where I need it and can gravity flow into the BK while sparging

Storm rolled in and didn't get it out tonight. It will be a few days before the plumbing shows up.

On another note, I got some amazon gift cards for Christmas. Does anyone have a recommendation for an RO system I can hook to my garden hose?

Found one on amazon for about $55. Probably not the best one but for use every other week for a few hours to make 10 gallons of water it should be fine. Also got a 800GPH fountain pump to do a recirc ice water through the wort chiller and a refractometer.

Plumbing parts should be here Monday. Maybe I can make New Year's Day beer

How many filters does it have? $55 seems cheap for a 3 stage would include a media filter, carbon block and RO unit.

It has 3 filters. Had an option for a 4th but it was a deionizer.

It says that it's a "50 gallon" unit, but 50 gallons of what? Does that mean that for every 50 gallons of water output, you have to replace the filters?

Nevermind, found it. It's a 50 gallon PER DAY unit. That's very sufficient for your use. To get 10 gallons of water, just has to be on for 5 hours.

For home use it's very slow but for this it should be fine. I have some containers I can do a few gallons here and there. Should pay for itself quick. RO water I've been getting is close to $1/gallon

Headed to Home Depot as soon as my wife gets home to get some hose clamps then I'll be off to the races. Got the male ends wrapped and installed. Silicone tubing is nice and easy to work with. This system will flow a lot better too going from a 3/8" to a 1/2" setup

The rest of the stuff should be here tomorrow

Left most hose will be dedicated pump input hose. Middle hose will primarily be pump output hose. Small one on right will pretty much be used for going into the wort chiller. I'll use one of the other hoses for the chiller outport. Fairly simple setup. I'll have to deal with moving hoses around some and having some extra hose length but I think it will work.

Playing with it this morning. Good thing I did a trial run. Turned pressure up too high and popped the end off the sparge arm. That pump can really move some liquid.

Ended up with about 1.25-1.5 gallons of loss.

Holy crap that plate chiller was NASTY!!! I pulled everything off and baked it the other day. Probably should have ran water through it first then baked it. I ran boiling PBW through it for a bit both ways then ran probably 15 gallons of clean cold water both ways until it was as clean as it was going to get. I'll have to make sure to run wort through a screen going into fermenter. Probably no way to guarantee it is 100% clean. Brew day I guess I need to circulate boiling wort through it for a few minutes to make sure it's sanitized then screen the crud out and clean the heck out of it. Or would I be better off circulating sanitizer through it?
Ornlu

Yes, standard way to sanitize plate chiller is to run boiling wort thru it for 5+ mins. In the meantime, fill it full of PBW or strong oxyclean+water. Rince thoroughly before use.

I used a cylinder shaped hops screen to add hops to wort so as not to gunk up my plate chiller. after, I just ran water through it backwards and it was fine. I did soak it soapy water from time to time. After brewing for 5 years I've decided that for my 5 gallon batches I just cool the batch in the sink with an ice bath. takes longer - but I'm not in a hurry and I've never had an infected batch. The time and energy to hook up the pump, plate chiller, hoses, etc and then clean it all afterwards is just not worth it to me.

New system worked great. I need to tweak my equipment profile a bit as I had too much water and it messed up my OG. I hit it dead on fine going into the kettle but was low going into the fermenter. Everything went really smooth and recirc plate chiller worked great.

Are you saying you didn't boil off as much liquid as you thought?

Immersion chillers for 5-10 gallons are super easy to use. I have 2 plate chillers I bought used, and have never used them. But I use an immersion chiller every time.

I also have a custom made hop basket that fits inside my immersion chiller coils and is the size of a ball lock keg. I'm still not sure if I like it or not. I just don't think there's enough wort passing through it.

No I guess not. It is a 9 gallon pot and I overestimated how much dead space I'd have so I had 8.1 gallons in it and really had to control the boil for a bit. Plus I accidentally added a little bit more water that I forgot was still inside the plate chiller from cleaning when I started cycling it. Not a big deal. I knew this one would be an experiment. Beer will still be good.

But I have less dead space than I thought I did. I guessed about 1.5 gallons between pump, hoses, chiller, and what was left at the bottom of MT and BK. So I used 10.1 gallons for a 5 gallon batch that really didn't have much grain, OG was supposed to be 1.042. I found out that there's less dead space in the MT and I can tip it and get pretty much everything under the false bottom and can get more than I thought from inside the BK, especially since I'm using a hop screen now and the amount of stuff in the kettle was basically nothing. Hard to get everything out of the chiller so I probably have an extra .1-.2 gallons of dead space which is a lot more manageable

Just all part of the learning process

After my runoff into the kettle, I always fill up a pot with some wort and set aside (I just open valve and let it trickle for a while). If I end up with too little at end of boil, I have my reserve I'll add in.

Intertap faucets?

What's the capacity of that, just 2 kegs?
Moxie
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yes, there are two intertap faucets now. Capacity for four kegs which is why I have 4 holes drilled. I'll fill it out over time.

Sick! Will that fit 4 pin locks? Have you tested the fit? Or do you plan on switching over to ball locks?

2 more on the hump, or is the pic just deceiving? Doesn't look like you could fit 4 on the floor from that angle.

Are you getting foam, those lines look short?

Man I'd really recommend the John Guest fittings, they make it so easy to move lines around for cleaning or adding/reorganizing, adjusting line lengths, etc. Man with 6 kegs, dealing with those worm clamps was such a pain. I did the right angle on the shanks too, so they point straight down. (but they swivel, so lines move easy if need be.)

With the swivel, after shipping you're in $32 to outfit 4 lines, $20 w/o swivel... very much worth it.

One on the hump, one on the floor with the other two. The picture looks deceiving with cans/bottles on the floor and a towel. I have fit 4 in there empty.

The lines are 6ft and I am getting some foam, although haven't played with the lines/pressure yet to try to dial it back (just got it together yesterday afternoon) but appreciate the pointers.

I did look into the fittings but honestly had not idea of what I wanted in the keezer or really how any of the parts came together. The fittings will be on my list of upgrades sooner than later.

Just remember, set your CO2 pressure according to temp and desired volumes of carbonation based on the table
https://www.kegerators.com/carbonation-table/

Then you adjust your line length in order to control foam (not the other way around - don't reduce pressure to reduce foam, your beer won't be properly carbed).

More line length = more resistance. Ideally you want it to be 1psi at the faucet. So find the friction coefficient of your line and divide it into the psi your gauge is set at to calculate line length..

It sounds complicated but it really isn't.

I understand what you are saying. I'll need to make the hoses longer. Thanks.

In the meantime, if y'all come through CS, you're welcome anytime.
