Turns out my garage will have enough space for my big chest freezer. Stripped it of its kegerator parts. I've got 6 Micromatic 4 1/8" SS shanks for sale. They retail for $32.75. I'm asking $25/ea. They have a new black flange on them and the locking washer. No beer nut or tailpeice or faucet. These are in Houston.

Hello all - I'm fairly new to homebrewing (one of those Christmas gift types) and am about to start my fifth batch. (I have a coffee milk stout in the fridge, a belgian strong ale in the brite tank, and starting a Amer. Wheat Ale this weekend). I've been doing extract brewing up till now, but am planning on doing a BIAB partial mash for the wheat ale.

Just wanted to say whatsup to this crowd. I'll probably be hanging around here a bit.

Welcome! I just finished my fifth batch a couple weeks ago.

I jumped in to all grain right away so I'm just thrashing about with batch mashing.

Was that a result of bravery, ignorance, or experience with friends?

The first 2, i think. I don't have any brew buddies.

I can't have a hobby without going all in, so I started kegging with batch #2. By batch #3 I had a separate temp controlled fermenter and keezer.

Wifey loves it. ha

Welcome! Can't say enough about the people on this thread. I would have a lot more stupid questions right now if they hadn't helped me along the way!

Btw, all grain isn't very difficult. I started doing 3 gallon all grain BIAB with my 5 gallon extract kit, plus a bag from wilserbrewer. It just takes more time. If you're doing partial mash, you can do all grain.

I'd be the same, but the life of a broke-ass grad student doesn't support such opulent western behavior

Welcome to the hobby, and the thread!

Any other DFWers doing Martin House's Riverside Shootout next Sunday (4/24)? I know WorkBoots08 and myself with both be out there. I think he's got a 10am start time. I'm at 11am.

I'll be brewing a full batch of the Rye Belgain IPA I did a 1 gallon "test" batch of a couple of months ago. The test batch ended up being one of the best beers I've made, IMO, so I'm excited to do a full batch. Here's the final recipe that I'll be brewing:

Mash @ 149F
6.5lbs 2-Row
6.5lbs Pilsner
3.5lbs Rye
1/4lb Carapils

1oz Cascade (8.5% AA) and 1/2oz Falconer's Flight (10.5% AA) @ 60
2oz Cascade @ 20
2oz Cascade and 1oz FF @ 10
1oz Cascade and 1oz FF @ 1
1oz Cascade and 1oz FF dry-hopped for 10 days

I'll use Martin House's custom saison blend yeast. I used WLP590 in the test batch. Hopefully they have a similar flavor profile. Hopefully they'll share some fermentation temp tips for it, as well. They say I can expect 90% attenuation. I got over 90% apparent with the WLP590.

The plan for fermentation is to pitch around 68F and keep it there for 5 days or so, then let it rise up to the mid-to-high 70s, for another 5 or 6 days, then drop it back down to the low 70s for dry-hopping.

How do y'all hear about these competitions? I've been considering entering one but never have a beer ready in time.

Join a homebrew club, more eyes and ears to keep members notified. Theres also this: http://bjcp.org/apps/comp_schedule/competition_schedule.php

Some breweries have more free form competitions. Where they are mostly best of show type stuff. And join the mailing lists for your favorite breweries near and far.

Good article. Unless my math is wrong, there is a small miscalculation (or maybe a typo) on the number of bottles on 10 corny kegs. I generally get about 48-50 bottles from a 5 gallon batch, so it should be about 500 bottles, not 200. Your last part about the timing needed to brew for a larger gathering like that should give some people an excuse to upgrade and expand their capabilities. I mean, I sure wouldn't want to let someone down if they asked me to brew a certain amount and I had to tell them it wouldn't be possible.

Do you have any way to provide a download link for the Excel file that lays out the timeline needed on different beers?

Yeah, that should be 500. I'll send them a note to correct it.

I can upload it to Google Docs. It's a work in progress, I find errors in it and fix them as I find them. I'll post a link when I get it uploaded.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cipV6Lq-fKll3UmQB5J3CMQKpMIo_Qj1EVVp0eEZR4Q

Go to File, and Download as .xlsx.

Keep in mind, this is a work in progress, so some stuff may not work correctly. I haven't tested it with more than what's in there right now.

To use it, go to the Entry sheet and enter your info. On the Calendar sheet, you can select the month and year.

The kegs used part is something I put in recently just playing around with it. It shows how many kegs are in use just for stuff that's on the calendar. Once the last date is past, a beer falls off the calendar and is removed from the kegs used tally.

I'm open to any and all comments and/or suggestions for improvements. If you have questions, let me know.

So tomorrow I will have the opportunity to get experience working in a small brewery!

Mainly just cellar work, but I'm looking to get my feet wet to see what it's like, so I will take every opportunity I can get.

Very cool! I had the opportunity a few years ago to brew up at Franconia. I won a Ticket contest from liking something on Facebook during North Texas Beer Week. Spent the day up there with Cam, their head brewer, and brewed a batch of their Kolsch. Pretty cool experience.

Hopefully your day at Tupps is going well!

Yesterday was a lot of fun! Very eye opening. Got to take a hydrometer sample of their wheat beer, Texas Shade, and transferred a different batch of Shade to brite, among other things.

I'll be brewing tomorrow as well - 9am slot. If you see an Ag and a Bear, that's us. We did a mini competition to determine what recipe we'd brew; my rosemary plum roggenbier won out.

I'm going to be in Dallas this weekend and will need to pick up brew supplies for a Monday brew. What LBHS should I visit? North Dallas or Irving area preferred.

These guys on Coit near Arapaho are great. Ground floor of the nearly-abandoned strip center in front of the nearly-abandoned office tower.

So I've got a beer brewed last 4th of July that's been sitting in the primary at 50F since then. Worth the trouble to bottle?

Pull a sample. That's a long time to be sitting on yeast.
