I think I'd prefer to believe Nico traded Luka because he's racist rather than being that dumb.

The Brunson narrative has gotten out of control in the past month also.

He was borderline unplayable in the Clippers series in 21 and he was all but headed to his dad in NY by the middle of that offseason. It would have taken $20 million+ to get him to sign the extension and the Mavs would have been crazy to agree to that after how he played in the playoffs.

People have let their emotions completely get ahold of them.
If I recall correctly, they had a chance to sign Brunson midway through the 21-22 season as well and by that point, there was more data that pointed toward him being better than the guy we saw in the Clippers series, no?

They did. Donnie Nelson (the actual GM at the time) didn't offer the $55m offer that JB would have accepted prior to the trade deadline because it would have made him trade INELIGIBLE. Donnie wanted to dangle him as a trade asset and thought worst case scenario Brunson would sign the deal in the summer.

Then the dad stuff happened and he blew up in the playoffs. But all of this was on record at the time that Brunson wanted to sign an extension with Dallas prior to the trade deadline.

And many many many people would have paid JB the max offer. I myself said we had to sign him to the max (which wasn't actually that much, it was like $30m/yr) because we couldn't afford to lose him for nothing. A $30m cap slot is easy to work with if you want to move on and there's no way JB is turning that offer down in January before the summer he went to NY.

Why not both?

Gonna post this here and looking forward to more analysis in the media as it's scary how much this already parallels the late 80s Mavs sudden decline. What's the 2020s equivalent of losing Roy Tarpley to cocaine?

The similarities are striking:

1988 - Western Conf Finals

1989 - they trade a 29 year old Mark Aguirre for a washed 34 year old Adrian Dantley, mainly for off the court reasons because they are tired of Aguirre's act (sound familiar?)

1989 - James Donaldson, starting center and key cog, blows out his knee. Sound familiar?

1990 - they trade 2 #1 picks (including the #9) for 29 year old Fat Lever whose knee is kaput and he plays 35 total games over the next 3 seasons. When they made this trade, the idea was pairing him with a 31 year old Ro Blackmon and 29 year old Derek Harper. In those days, a 30ish year old 3 guard rotation is pretty dang old. Relying on aging key players sound familiar?

1991 - blow the 6th pick on Doug Smith

1992-94 - draft Jimmy Jackson but get cheap, so he holds out almost his entire rookie year. 1993-94 - #2 overall picks both years, and draft Kidd and Mashburn. But a love triangle and owner idiocy ultimately messes this all up. Current owner idiocy has already blown this by shipping those picks off before they ever make them

Mid-90s. Ross Perot Jr group buys the team and their main goal is a new stadium to drive the Victory development, not building a winning team. Sound familiar?

That franchise had a stretch of being unlucky in the lottery and stepping on its dick with its picks after bad seasons. This franchise just cut to the chase by making sure it won't have any picks to begin with

Yeah the Brunson side kept saying they'd sign because they didn't want it to appear like obvious tampering. It was obvious at the time that he wasn't coming back before the 21-22 season even started.

And it would have been absolutely ridiculous to pay him the max before 21-22. He was just unplayable in a playoff series. Your backcourt would have been two ball dominant guards who are minus defenders. It just wasn't going to be a great basketball fit.

And Brunson didn't want to be in Luka's shadow. He always wanted to run a show himself. He just didn't really want to be here with Luka.

This year's Mavs team is better on paper with everyone healthy. Why can't you admit that??

You're being so obtuse. This whole new schtick you've created was built on a tweet than you posted of one play in a game where Luka was playing terribly in a game where they lost to one of the worst teams in the league. You showed you didn't know anything about basketball with that post and you were called on it.

Now you're going to do a whole bit on a Lakers play that nobody is asking for.

Lakers players? He was our guy, our dirk 2.0. He's not just a "lakers player." His trading away is likely the difference between the promised land and a decade of oblivion.

I'll do what I want, actually :-) I think more people are on board with me than whatever your fake optimism is. Sorry I'm not over this dumbass franchise dumping a generational talent for no reason and building a core surrounding a bunch of old injury prone guys.

My next post will be about Kai Jones though, just for you!

Yeah, but AD gives us the best front court in the league! Defensive juggernaut! Win now! The team is better without Luka and with AD! Unfortunately, we're without Luka and without AD!

Genuinely wonder why it triggers you so much? Especially when Kyrie is done for, AD might not come back, a number of other guys are hurt, this season is ****ed…the foreseeable future is ****ed. Like you're really gonna be mad that I'm not breaking down the current state of the team when it's a dumpster fire? It's going to be 10-15 years until this can be rectified.

This is not the time for your dumbass fake optimism. No one wants to hear it.

Our franchise is tanked for 10+ years when we had a 10+ year championship window. We all deserve a pity party.

F *ck off with that. Just because YOU don't think this Mavericks thread should be about the fact that this guy was our future and thrown aside because of one dumb MFers decision, doesn't mean it won't be about that for a long long f *cking time.

That's the reality.

The general *****ing about the Mavs is whatever, but posting specific plays and Luka stats on a nightly basis just makes this the Luka/Lakers thread.

How is that not obvious?

The dude still wows me on a nightly basis and I would assume most Mavs fans feel the same way. I enjoy seeing his highlights and at the same time, they make me sad.

Hopefully, Caleb Martin can start putting together some nice tape.

You're the only one whining about it. You'll be okay.

It's weird you're more annoyed with anyone posting about the trade than the trade itself lmao

The state of this team leads always back to what that guy. OUR GUY, is now doing for someone else. And that it didn't need to happen.

Just imagine the last four weeks with Luka coming back from the injury. Grimes is still here. We DONT know if Gafford gets hurt. We DONT know if PJ gets hurt. Exum comes back. We DONT know if Kyrie gets hurt.

So yeah, every Luka game will be in all our minds. Maybe forever.

I already made that exact point very early on. Again, the general *****ing that yall who have never posted on the thread before want to do is whatever. At least it's Mavs related.

Posting Luka stat lines or tweets of Luka highlights from Lakers accounts is not Mavs related. When you get specific to Luka on the Lakers, you are not doing Mavs content, and it shouldn't be on this thread. There is another Luka thread for you.

Nice comeback win tonight for the Suns…gap closes to 3 games. Too bad the Hawks couldn't pull off the upset of the Bucks. Maybe we get lucky tomorrow and Portland pulls off a win in Boston.

This feels like we are back in the pre-Cuban Mavs era.

NBA let Nico gut the franchise.

We aren't there yet.

I'm sure I'll get called out for being too positive, but it's just true. The window is extremely short, and we'll probably be in the wilderness soon and for a long time. But we aren't there yet.

This season got hosed by injuries, plagues, and stupid front offices, but the window actually is still open.

As far as ownership goes, we absolutely are in the Perot/Zaccanelli days where the goal of development tied into a new arena is the priority over the team

The window is open*

*if a group of old, oft injured players (one of whom will be lucky to be back by the next AS break) can hold it together long enough to string some incredible luck together.

It is not open at all right now. And whether it will open at all is still a huge question. This was a 2 year window a month ago. Now it's either 0 or 1
