Nico must have inklings that Luka wasnt going to re-sign here. This is the only thing that makes sense at the moment
Kind of wild to think he would just walk away from a 5-year $345 million super-max deal.
Honestly, I think Nico was just being a complete dumbass here...the return makes no sense. They should have gotten way more for Luka.
This feels like a type of deal in fantasy football that one of your buddies texts you about and you are so shocked they'd even propose the idea that you have to try and act like you aren't too excited so they will actually propose it in the app.
I don't think Luka would have walked away, though. I think he would have signed it and just kept half assing his conditioning like he has been. There isn't really a history of European stars forcing their way out like there is with American stars (Kawhi, AD, Durant, Harden, etc)
Yeah, Luka wasn't at risk of leaving in free agency. He'd have been leaving $100 million on the table.
I'm probably coping, but the Mavs were absolutely going to be stuck in a cycle of Luka being perpetually overweight and unhealthy while also always wanting to play in Euro tournaments. Luka loves representing Slovenia and he was never going to be a guy who would take a summer off to recover. He also wasn't going to be a guy who took conditioning or reshaping his body seriously. He may do that now with a new "f you" mentality, but there was no inkling of that changing while he was here.
ETA: He still was a top 3 player with the conditioning and injury issues, so I'm not just ****ting on him. But let's also not act like we hadn't been talking about his weight and his on court antics before the finals run. The finals run made a lot of talking points go away, but we kinda got a glimpse of his capped ceiling against teams that can switch and will make him defend.
Its really weird to watch a "fan" immediately back the dog**** organization. I expect it from a reporter like MacMahaon, his livelihood is dependent on it. But a fan? gtfo
I've been a fan of the mavericks my whole life. Why wouldn't I try to rationalize what my favorite team did?
I'm also aware you were completely blind to Luka's deficiencies and were making excuses for him last year when he was clearly fat and not locked in near enough, especially defensively.
I don't like the deal. But I'm a Mavs fan, so I'm going to keep watching the Mavs and hoping for good things for the Mavs.
fake fan Ive said many times he needs to take a summer off and actually get in shape. But hes still a top 5 player, and likely to be a top 20 player all time. You win champiionships with that player.
This trade is indefensible in every way.
Trading him at all is insane, but COULD be defended with the right trade.
None of the logic tracks when you look at the actual trade, AND we didnt even get a haul of 1sts.
Its indefensible
That's right, true fans stop following when the team does something they don't like.
I did add the rest of this, and y
ea im being hyperbolous with the fake fan insults. you definitely arent fake.
BUT, there is truly no defense of how Nico proceeded. Even if you agree with the decision to trade Luka instead of giving him a supermax deal next offseason...this CANT be your trade return.
and all the logic they gave doesnt apply to the rest of the trade when its AD you are getting.
and I never defended Luka being out of shape or injured, I just disagreed with the notion that it was the problem with the team. He still dominated.
I just truly cant understand seeing this trade occur, and even having ANY instinct to agree with it like you did.
But its probably just how you approach things i guess, you are just immediately trying to find the silver lining to avoid doing what the rest of the fanbase is doing "screw this team!" which I get, it doesnt make sense, but I get it.
I will personally never stop being a mavs fan, but that doesnt mean I will go to any more games this season.
You cant be invested as a fan and NOT be personally offended by the trade. and they have absolutely lost a LARGE percentage of fans from a certain age range with this trade
