Laura Koppe strikes again.

1 dead, another critically injured after shooting during gathering in northeast Houston

Quote:

A 20-year-old man was killed and another man was critically injured in a shooting Wednesday night at what police described as a regular neighborhood domino gathering in northeast Houston.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. in the 4900 block of Laura Koppe Road.

Quote:

According to the Houston Police Department, officers arrived to find a 20-year-old man dead at the scene. A second victim, a 50-year-old man, had been shot in the face while inside a vehicle.

I don't remember any shootings over dominoes at The Chicken back in the day.

Yep...if you are on the major roadways after midnight, it's almost a guaranty that 60-75%+ fellow travelers are inebriated to some degree. And Houston is so damn gigantic and spread out a lot of these drunk drivers are traveling across city or out to the suburbs. I saw some dude in a Camaro just randomly Dale Ernhardt into the left concrete wall going north on 290 just past BW8 and then rocket across all lanes of traffic not long ago around 1am. It was as if he blacked out completely, woke up and then wayyy overcorrected.

I was wondering what the hell was going on about a month ago when I walked over to the Highlight to get lunch. Very weird dressed people. Definitely Canadian.

The issue of not "fitting in" plagues Black nerds and other minority groups because there are few visual representations of them in science fiction, anime and comics. Interpretations of a popular character as an alternative race or gender are often met with hostility at large conventions due to fandoms being protective of the original representation.

I was in the room here one day... watchin' the Mexican channel on TV. I don't know nothin' about Pele. I'm watchin' what this guy can do with a ball and his feet. Next thing I know, he jumps in the air and flips into a somersault and kicks the ball in - upside down and backwards... the dang (sc) goalie never knew what the hell hit him. Pele gets excited and he rips off his jersey and starts running around the stadium waving it around his head. Everybody's screaming in Spanish. I'

Of the 83 cities listed by safety, Houston was 82, surpassing only Memphis, Tennessee. Dallas was also listed among the least safe large cities coming in at 73 on the list.

I think you may be underestimating the percentage of shift workers commuting at off-peak hours in a big ol' damned hurry to get home.

But if I see sporty cars in a hurry, especially a pack of them, I gently slide over to the right and prepare to brake if they wreck.

HOUSTON Two teenage boys were hospitalized after police said they were shot during an attempted armored car robbery in southwest Houston Tuesday afternoon.

The robbery happened around 2:30 p.m. on Bellaire Boulevard near Chimney Rock when two or three suspects approached the driver.

Investigators said the suspects sprayed the driver with bear spray in an apparent attempt to steal the cash. The driver then fired several shots, striking at least two of the suspects.

Quote:

HOUSTON Harris County commissioners are set to discuss a proposed 2026 tax rate increase aimed at preserving early childhood programming, according to items on the agenda for today's Commissioners Court meeting.
The agenda item, requested by the county judge, calls for "discussion and possible action" on a proposed 2026 tax rate for Harris County for the purpose of "maintaining a portion of critical Harris County early childhood programming."
Specific details of what the proposal will include have not yet been released.
The discussion echoes a push made in August 2025, when Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo brought children from a local daycare center to a Commissioners Court meeting to advocate for an early childhood "penny tax" initiative. That proposal ultimately failed to pass.
It remains unclear at this time how the current proposal differs from the previous initiative or exactly which programs would be funded under the new tax rate structure. Further details are expected as the court takes up the item.

I don't think this one is a grift. I think this is her attempt at leaving a legacy. She knows she is getting run out, but if she gets this one thing passed, she can always say she was in it for making things better for the children of harris county and point at this one thing. She will forget about and excuse away all the other stuff and point to this one thing as an example of her intentions and example of the good things she did and wanted to do.

Doesn't mean there isn't a grift baked in, but I don't think that is her intention right now.

You are being pretty naive if you think Lina is going nuts in public and burying her future political career over some vague notion of a legacy. She has somebody who expected to get some money from her and this proposal was a handout intended to reach them. Wouldn't be surprised to find out it is the same consulting "group" (comprised of one person with no experience) that she tried to give the Covid contract to.
