Depending on what you get, Alma Latina on Shepherd is great and might be a little cheaper. It's somewhere between the upper end and lower end Tex-Mex joints in the area.

Service is top notch.

I haven't been there since before the fire. I need to go back sometime.

Teo is our go to. Great food and people.

While not "tex mex", I have enjoyed Tacos a Go Go's new location. Appreciate that's more casual, but has been solid and drinks are pretty good too.

Damn, that HVAC unit is LOUD.

And it's like that all day and all night, even when they are closed. They spent thousands of dollars planting trees that predictably had zero effect.

HVAC breaker box. Pull leaver down. Problem solved.

How's Tia Maria's holding up? It's been a while for me.

The food isn't particularly good, but it's still cheap and busy every time I occasionally dine there.

I've never had a bad experience at Los Tios, so they're still my #1. They're not fancy enough for some folks, but those aren't my people anyway.

Los Tios is a classic. All their Tex Mex stuff is as good as it ever was and they now have great fajitas as well.

Upstairs bar is a cool spot to kill an hour waiting for the table and the pizza was good as was whatever small dish we got. The whole space is pretty beautiful, and no complaints, but I like Coastline better.

Need to get to Gypsy Poet in the Heights as I liked the one in midtown for a work lunch.

Sorry but if I went to go get pizza and had to valet I'd take my ass somewhere else.

The city gives additional parking "credits" for valet lots, which plays into the restaurant's approved occupant load. To maximize their occupant load (i.e. number of tables), they made both lots valet-only. There is a huge segment of the population who will absolutely not valet their vehicle, even if it's free. The necessary result of that is Lawrence Street being hammered with on-street parking while their back valet lot is only 15-20% full. This is actually an issue I think the city should address by requiring restaurants to provide some minimum number of free, non-valet spaces on-site.

The folks on Lawrence are already working on a resident parking permit zone petition, which will then lead to Alexander doing the same. Being surrounded by permit-only parking will either force them to drop the valet or reduce their business to unsustainable levels.

ETA: COH also gives parking credits for bike racks.

We are in the market for a new "regular" mexican place in Houston. We've been regular at El Tiempo but the price is a tad high.

Is there anything decent that comes at a slightly lower price point? We typically go each Sunday for lunch and live in the Heights, for reference.

La Tapatia. Best salsa in Houston. North of 59 on richmond

This is the correct answer, excellent spot! Teo on Airline is really good too, but I feel like it's not quite what it used to be, just my opinion. La Tapatia is not fancy, but everything is above average to excellent, and great staff. And as mentioned, salsa is awesome.

Went to Lazy Lane this past Saturday.

Great food (had the Cajun Shrimp pasta) and they are doing something cool with their Movie Nights during October, showcasing a different Halloween movie each night. Walked in and Ghostbusters was playing so that was fun. We were sitting in the main dining area, so could faintly hear it, wasn't distracting to dinner at all. Have a bounce house and other things for kiddos as well.

I really like Hando on 11th. I passed Angie's Pizza the first thing I thought of was a bad AC.

Kanpai Bar next door is cool.

Happy hour stuff;

Tried out La Lucha's French dip Friday last week. Pretty solid sammy. Love that place but had to laugh how many people showed up looking for fried chicken and left when they found out lunch is only the French dip until 4:30, their normal hours.

Told the manager to try a French quarter Friday and make a debris po boy! No one in town really makes one…if you know of any, let me know!

We love Hando but we frequent the one in Spring Branch on Long Point

It's not up there with the high-end sushi joints but it's fresh, simple, and always on point. And yes they do a good job on the cocktail menu and the Kanpai Bar.

For quick, casual sushi it's a great option.

Ordered the fried shrimp and roast beef debris po boy from BBs for dinner last night.

They left off the roast debris so it was just a dry ass fried shrimp po boy.

To their credit, they realized they left off the debris and called me to say they were refunding my payment.

That White Oak location is hit or miss on getting things right. The order prior to that, I placed online at 11:04.

I finally got it at 11:50. It was that po boy and two side salads. The order was right but it shouldn't take 45 minutes to get it out.

Agree it's very hit or miss. It also looks dead now every time I go by there for lunch. I know I haven't been in a long time and it used to be pretty regular rotation. He's got lots of irons in the fire though...

We started going to the one in Spring Branch too. Has little to no wait compared to the Heights location, and offers the same service.

There's a great little wine bar called The Library right down the street that makes for a perfect spot for after dinner drinks.

Have you been since they expanded their food menu? We haven't been yet.

Their flatbread pizzas have always been awesome.
I was in the room here one day... watchin' the Mexican channel on TV. I don't know nothin' about Pele. I'm watchin' what this guy can do with a ball and his feet. Next thing I know, he jumps in the air and flips into a somersault and kicks the ball in - upside down and backwards... the dang (sc) goalie never knew what the hell hit him. Pele gets excited and he rips off his jersey and starts running around the stadium waving it around his head. Everybody's screaming in Spanish. I'
