Depending on what you get, Alma Latina on Shepherd is great and might be a little cheaper. It's somewhere between the upper end and lower end Tex-Mex joints in the area.
Service is top notch.

Damn, that HVAC unit is LOUD.
And it's like that all day and all night, even when they are closed. They spent thousands of dollars planting trees that predictably had zero effect.

We are in the market for a new "regular" mexican place in Houston. We've been regular at El Tiempo but the price is a tad high.
Is there anything decent that comes at a slightly lower price point? We typically go each Sunday for lunch and live in the Heights, for reference.
La Tapatia. Best salsa in Houston. North of 59 on richmond

This is the correct answer, excellent spot! Teo on Airline is really good too, but I feel like it's not quite what it used to be, just my opinion. La Tapatia is not fancy, but everything is above average to excellent, and great staff. And as mentioned, salsa is awesome.

Tried out La Lucha's French dip Friday last week. Pretty solid sammy. Love that place but had to laugh how many people showed up looking for fried chicken and left when they found out lunch is only the French dip until 4:30, their normal hours.
Told the manager to try a French quarter Friday and make a debris po boy! No one in town really makes one…if you know of any, let me know!

Agree it's very hit or miss. It also looks dead now every time I go by there for lunch. I know I haven't been in a long time and it used to be pretty regular rotation. He's got lots of irons in the fire though...

We love Hando but we frequent the one in Spring Branch on Long Point
It's not up there with the high-end sushi joints but it's fresh, simple, and always on point. And yes they do a good job on the cocktail menu and the Kanpai Bar.
For quick, casual sushi it's a great option.

There's a great little wine bar called The Library right down the street that makes for a perfect spot for after dinner drinks.
Hando and The Library has become our go-to date night

📍Captain Tom’s - Houston, Texas
Driven by this place a dozen times but never stopped. Got the fried catfish plate and enjoyed it - fresh, flaky, and not overly battered. House made tartar sauce was sensational.

Would've given a 10 if he had a couple of micheladas.
