Yes but the quiet bore kits come without drilled baffles, unlike some of the other "solvent kits", and are perfectly legal unless you have proceeded to manufacture/drill without a stamp, no? That was my understanding and I am not trying to do anything improperly.
That is a fair question. Interpretations and enforcement seems to vary. I do not recommend having a kit or parts on had until you have a stamp.

I did a ton of research for mine. To build what I wanted it ended up being just as much as a commercial can. The only benefit was the 2 week at the time approval. I was not saving any money. Last 2 cans have been 5 months. IMO that is worth waiting for a better can. If I had a mill it might be worth it but most the commercial cans perform better. That was for a 22lr can. A .30 cal. would have been different.

It's a budget thing for me.

I'd like a can compatible for my 300 win mag and .300blk as those 2 are currently my home defense and long range / hunting rifles. They're also the only 2 I have threaded.

Budget would need to be under $500 before tax stamp. The analytical part of me says that means a heavy can or lesser performance on sound reduction that I'll regret spending the money on.

Closest I can find with my limited knowledge is Gemtech Tracker or YHM Resonator. Both are over budget.

So anyone have a suggestion for a cheaper alternative than what I posted above?

That would seem to rule out a form 1.
No, it wouldn't. You would, however, have to be at the machine shop in person with your stamp in hand while any work was done on manufacturing parts for your suppressor.

So hiring someone else to fabricate parts is the same as manufacturing it yourself?
Again - you have to be on the premises with your stamp in hand prior to any part being fabricated.

But yes, with a Form 1 you can have parts made no problem by anybody. No different than buying a Quiet Bore kit - they did the machine work for you already, even if you are finishing it up by drilling a hole in a baffle and end cap.
If the QB kits have the whole drilled they are considered suppressor parts. You cannot manufacture suppressor parts with out the proper license or Form 1 stamp. QB will no longer ship the "kit" until you have the stamp (last I checked).

So if you are on premises with stamp and they are helping, yes, but they cannot make the baffles with out you there. You can also not be in possession of completed baffles. There are also mixed interpretations on "spare parts." You are not allowed R&D under a Form 1 either.

I am honestly not sure what you are arguing here.

It is cut and dried, there is no legal debate - if you have your Form 1 stamp in hand, you can waltz into Joe Schmoe's machine shop and watch them machine the parts for your Form 1 can.

If QB wont ship a solvent trap without a Form 1 in hand, that is their choice. But as it stands right now, a solvent trap is perfectly legal to own so long as you dont finish the manufacturing process.

Yes but it is a moving target. Solvent traps are legal until determined to be suppressor parts. Some of the manufacturers have pushed the line and been eased by the ATF. Now I know the NFA is BS and if we see the tax go up, people will stop caring about going through the process.

i ordered 2 in late Jan last year. check cashed in mid feb and stamps arrived mid july. a buddy ordered about the same time as me and was about a month or two behind, but i think that was mainly because the can he ordered wasn't in stock at the time.

i ordered another one back in mid oct...hoping for the same result.

OK. I have my trust set up. Is my only option to fill out a regular form 1 to turn my pistol into a SBR and snail mail? Looks like the SilencerCo Kiosks don't do form 1s anymore.

What is the best way to do the finger prints and passport photo?

Efile when the ATF website is backup (shutdown Wednesdays).

Order fingerprint cards here:
https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/form/fingerprint-card-instructions-and-example-fd-258

Have a local PD do them for you or order the stuff to do it yourself (YouTube and stuff below):
Identicator Fingerprint Cardholder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050AM5US/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_1HhcGbEC31HVC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Lee Inkless FingerPrint Pad (S03027) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001HA4PJ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_eIhcGbD650D8J?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Run to a CVS and ask for passport photos and scan them as a jpeg

Once you have all of that, follow instructions for form 1 SBR (bunch of resources online) and submit. Once received and/or initially reviewed, you'll get an email from ATF asking for fingerprint cards (check junk mail) to be mailed to them WITH A COPY OF THEIR CONTROL DOCUMENT (ask me how I know). Then you just wait and hope it's only a few weeks.

FYI - I'm eating lunch and have only done a few SBRs so I'm sure I left something off. Plenty of knowledgeable people on this thread to correct me or clarify.

What TTHA posted is essentially the process, I have never filed a Form 1 with a trust as i have always done it as an individual.

FYI: I called about my current Form 4s. The oldest went pending about a month after I expected. The agent told me they are running 7-11 months right now. For what that is worth.

  • Buy your forms from Amazon or some other site. They are the exact same if you buy the FD 258 ones. You need 2 completed cards per form 1 you plan to send. If they plan to charge you a lot, you can print yourself using a fingerprint stamper from Amazon (Did my 4 cards myself without issue)
  • That is the pack i used (Needed 4 so 10 gave me 6 screw up practice attempts to get cards I was happy with)
  • Do not buy a "passport photo" for the $10-$15 they outrageously charge. Download any of the number of passport photo selfie apps. They take a photo of you and explain what background to use and frame your face as needed (very easy to follow). Then it puts that 6 times onto a 4"x6" digital photo if you even need to physically print it else it gives you the digital 2"x2" you need already digital.
When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth!

Did not know about the passport photo apps. That is way easier!

I order my fingerprint cards from the ATF because they're free and a few years ago I was told that it is one less thing you have to worry about if you're using the cards they send you. That being said, I did order some from amazon and had no issues with them on a form 4.

I hope that is the case but I think I found a small error in my original form that may have caused additional scrutiny. I added the document on eforms but who knows if that will address anything. I cannot get them on the phone without waiting less than 20 mins.

Got a disapproval notice this morning. It was my first Efile since 41f, I messed it up. Resubmitted today for my Scorpion EVO. It got all the blanks filled in they said I missed. What a pain! I have to resubmit fingerprints too.
