Exactly. It doesn't have that glossy black look I usually think of with an indigo. And the vertical stripes along the side of the underside of the neck hint like a water snake. Just looking casually, the size didn't really occur to me looking at the snake itself; but when compared to the 4 wheeler, it is obviously a big snake.OnlyForNow said:

Did the same to a black tail rattler out near big bend this past weekend. He was laid out in a gravel road getting some morning sun and I straddled him. He wasn't happy about being nearly run over or then nudged off the road with a walking stick. No camera or phone was handy.
Couple of friends were floating the Buffalo River this last weekend and had company while taking a break
Pretty funny, but that has to be staged. They targeted all young men (no women) and in every scene they conveniently ran into stuff that would fall over comically or willingly jumped into water. It was too ridiculous.Prognightmare said:

It was a combination of the presence of the rattle, the banding, and the dark tail. The only other rattler that somewhat resembles that (in coloration/banding), to my knowledge, would be a rock rattlesnake and he's way too big for that.

Just getting back to the thread since I posted those cottonmouth pics above. The snake made the threat display but never once tried to strike out despite me nearly running him over and taking a long stick and shuffling him off the gravel road.

I've nudged one repeatedly with a steel toed boot and he kept displaying like that, but never struck once. He liked to posture like he was a big threat, coiled up with mouth open.
Coachwhip decided to camp out in my snake traps for a while. I let him out on a cool evening, so he hung around for some pictures as long as I didn't get too close.
