Couple of snakes I've saved from being in the school / from the road.

Thoughts? Water snake? I'm not as familiar with TN snakes.

Corn Snake tonight.

I think the top one is a baby northern water snake and the second one is a brown snake.

Cool. Like I said, not as familiar with TN snakes. I don't get to get out as part of my job now (teacher) as I used to (working at nature centers, national park, preserve, etc.), although hopefully that will change soon, as I've applied for a couple of local extension agent positions.

Well I'm not 100% on the first one being a northern, could be yellow bellied or something else we don't see in Texas, but it is a baby water snake for sure.

Here's a couple of old ones from the phone that I hadn't posted yet. Back from working at the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve and random other snakes I've saved.

And here are my Eastern Hognose and one of my corn snakes.

Thanks. The cottonmouth looked extremely light colored.

Nah, fun times. Stepped over numerous rattlesnakes while giving hikes much to the dismay of the fellow hikers.

Not sure if I ever told you about it, but that time I got your transfer permit for Balcones, I shot at (and missed) a doe at probably 175 yards right at the end of shooting light. On the walk out to where she was, I stepped within about 3 feet of a rattlesnake and was made well aware of it. No way I would have ever seen the damn thing curled up in a cactus, but it let me know I was too close.

LOL at that Hognose. Thing looks like it got run over.

The earlier story from another poster about being a fool for snakes when you were a kid got me to thinking about a time when me and my brothers (all about 7-9 years old) went around the neighborhood in Memphis looking in all the water meters at each house. We found a rough earth snake in about every other one and had a bucket that we probably put 50 snakes in. Brought them home to my step-mom and she flipped her lid. So we put the bucket out in the carport and sometime during the night a cat or other critter tipped the bucket over. We were finding rough earth snakes for weeks around the yard and in the house after that. Mom was livid.

Yeah, "Severis" (the hog nose snake - my wife loves Harry Potter and named him) loves to spread out his entire body. Most Eastern Hognoses I find in the wild will only do that on their neck. He's the first who does his entire body. It's pretty cool - he doesn't do it often. He never does the "act like he's dead" act.

This picture got me thinking...are there any snakes with the vertical lines around the mouth that are venomous or are they all safe?

As a general rule for snakes you can find in Brazos County, could you say that if it has round non-elliptical eyes and ISN'T a coral snake, it's probably non-venomous?

I'm genuinely asking...not sure if it's correct!

Domestically I don't believe so, but that's more of a 12fmane question.
Badace52

Actually that's generally correct, but if you are close enough to differentiate slit-like pupils on a cottonmouth, you are probably too close.

I can't think of any venomous snakes in the U.S. that have prominent vertical lines along the jawline off the top of my head.

Question for the experts...is there much of a difference between the northern timber rattlers and what we call cane break rattlers down south? Or are they the same species? From my little bit of googling "people" claim that the canebrakes get much larger.

Well, snakes of the same species do come in different colorations or "morphs" depending on locality. Some also have slightly different patterning.

Same species... different names in different parts of its range.

I've seen some real close patterned/colored moccasins and watersnakes.

In almost all instances the watersnakes have had the "nastier temperament" despite what people say about moccasins being bad tempered.

In my opinion the darker variations of PBWS or YBWS tend to get confused with moccasins the most. A close second would have to be the broad banded water snake. Those guys are the nastiest of the bunch in my opinion... they don't always bite but they sure do sell "I'm venomous" hard.

It's good I saw that pic bc I would just be looking for cottonmouths to be black or gray.

Maybe by looks, but by size, it is immediately recognizeable as much bigger than a YBWS.
