Sorry guys, it appears the footage was altered. I will leave it up and accept my shame for not checking more thoroughly.

If you read the comments below the video, Snopes de-bunked this. The video was manipulated to make the snake look bigger. It's actually only about 6'-7' feet in length. Not like that's a small anaconda, but not the big monster that we're led to believe.

Llano County Hunting Cabin Snake. I think non-venomous but would like the knowledge and wisdom of OB to confirm.

About 3/4" in diameter - the folding table leg makes a perfect reference.

The head is hidden in the pic but didn't look like a rattler head to me.

No visible button or rattler segments on the tail, hidden by the chair leg in the pic.

Ok to let my son-in-law sleep here Friday night? Should I tell him about the snake?

Does it matter that he is doing me a favor by hunting hogs?

RAT SNAKE? Don't take my ID Hondo, I hate snakes but I'm trying to learn from this board and I have. Did I get it right?

Side note: Yes, tell SIL. I'm deathly afraid of snakes and if my FIL didn't tell me until after the fact, I'd probably hit him.

ETA: Vander and Dbill answered while I was typing, but I was correct. YAY!

Thanks everyone for your help. Like Prog, I am trying to learn. What is the distinguishing characteristic(s) that said rat snake?

For example, this pic is from Your Friend's post at the top of Page 6. To my untrained eye, the markings look very similar to my rat snake. What's the diff?

Head shape, pattern, rattley tail, venom long fangs, scale texture, girth.

To me, the easisest way to tell between a rat and a WDB is the scales.

Rattlesnakes have a very rough scale pattern that overlap, While rat snakes look more like a skin to me.

You're much better off figuring out the distinguishing features of the venomous snakes first and then the non-venomous.

1.) start with Coral Snakes (red touch yellow - kill a fellow)
2.) work on copperheads (should be the second easiest to identify based on pattern (some may confuse hognose snakes or a few others but that's it)
3.) rattle snakes ... does it have a rattle? Lot of variation in patterns for Texas but the major species (Diamondback and Timber) are relatively consistent and easy to spot. Just need to see more.

4.) Cottonmouth is about as tough to distinguish as it gets. Mainly because every water snake out there has a color and/or pattern that resembles it and the differentiating characteristics are harder for beginners. Things like scale orientation on head, presence of "eye liner", how it swims, and other things.

Good luck!

I thought I read somewhere they just remove their venom glands.

Usually just their venom glands.

Venomoids are snakes where the venom glands have been removed.

Saw this guy this morning right on the deck outside my back door. I have a 7, 5, and 3 year old, so i felt like i needed to make his short life over.

Not sure if this is the same one or if we have a litter of copperheads under our deck, but my wife took this picture yesterday afternoon. He slithered between the boards before she could get to him.

Haven't seen a copperhead in our yard in about a year and potentially see 2 in less than 24 hours. I guess it could be the same one though.

That's what I told my wife anyways. She is ready to rip up the deck and replace it with concrete.
