If he was still in the basket, that would be a great idea. Now he is curled up underneath a basket and it's dark. Looks like he gets to stay the night.

Unless he was rolling around in a bunch of poison ivy or is excreting a bunch of poison from some frogs he ate (all of which are not really possible with a rat snake, to my knowledge), he's not poisonous either.

I haven't posted much on this thread since I haven't seen many snakes this year. It did get me to thinking about a scene I witnessed a few years ago. I was camping at Brazos Bend State Park, and was standing on a trail talking to a buddy of mine. Something out of the corner of my eye caught my attention. There was one of several nest boxes scattered around the park intended to be used by the ducks there. These nest boxes are placed on poles several feet tall in the middle of water with the intent, I assume, to deter predators from reaching them. It didn't seem to phase these rat snakes, apparently. I don't believe there were any eggs in it at the time. I didn't see any bulges as they exited.

I let them go at the fence line and figure there's 50/50 odds they go play with my neighbor's vermin, and all my neighbors have bigger properties than mine. I think I just get a lot because much of my pasture is fallow and largely going back native...better habitat.

Yeah, he was pretty pissed too and buzzing. There was a big log pile nearby so figured that's where he lived and he was just out by the road getting some sun. We were at the in-laws cabin in upstate PA and driving up the shale road to go back to the cabin and we almost ran over him with the truck so he wasn't too happy.

My F-I-L does a wildlife calendar every year with animals he catches on the game cams he places around the property and he's been wanting to get a good pic of a rattler so we stopped and he got his big camera with zoom lens out and snapped some pics while I took some with my phone.

I've seen a few of these "black phase" timber rattlers up there but have yet to see a good "yellow phase" one.
