I know it goes against the spirit of this thread (which I have happily adopted) but having a young son who has been swarmed by yellow jackets, all wasps and flying stinging creatures die around here

No, killing wasps is always approved.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Yea only good wasps is a dead one for me. And I'd stop in the road to shoo almost any snake or other critter if it was safe to do so.

i feel like we should start an official wasp thread now cause i really dont understand/nor care about the ecological balance that wasps/hornets/daubers provide.

Just smoked a yellow jacket nest in my garage. Used ant/roach poison. Killed them all.

Good riddance

Have a buddy that swears by brake cleaning fluid for wasps. He claims that they drop dead on contact so its much quicker than the regular spray, but I don't know what's in it chemically speaking or how environmentally friendly brake cleaning fluid is (or isn't)

I've had good luck with carburator cleaner (Acetone/Toluene/Methanol). Kills them on contact, just don't spray any painted surfaces.

Was tagged by 13 yellow jackets in the head as a nine year old. Still waiting for the super powers to be revealed.

When I was doing fieldwork during graduate school, I stepped right on a hornet nest. I ended up getting stung 27 different places. I was out in the middle of nowhere doing a vegetation survey, so I just had to grin and bear it.

That was one of the suckiest days ever!

In my experience a cup of gasoline kills wasps faster than anything. They don't even fly when it hits them. They just drop dead instantly.

I was working on a ranch in South Texas a few weeks back and disturbed an African bee hive, got stung and hauled ass. Later on the same day the ranch owner got too close and got stung over 130 times in his head. Those things are no joke. I ended starting a bonfire, and using an excavator, placing their hive in it.

I'm not scared of spiders, scorpions, the dark, ghosts, etc. Snakes cause a visceral reaction in me. My wife had to pick up a snake and move it to a field. She laughed, I'm a *****.

Eh, it's ok. I'm the same with flying roaches. And I usually like most creepy crawlers.

How could you tell it was an African hive as opposed to regular bees? Just because of how aggressive they were?

Mostly because this happened in area where they are very common and because he was stung so many times hours after the hive was disturbed, pretty far from the hive.

Quote:

Whereas a EHB may send out as few as 10-20 guard bees to respond to a threat within 20 yards (18.3 m) of the hive, AHB may send several hundred with a range of 120 yards (110 m) from the hive.

Quote:

A normal EHB hive will calm back down after around 20 minutes, resuming their normal activities and no longer buzzing with aggression. AHB on the other hand can remain aggressive for hours afterward.

Well, this bit of slightly cooler wetter weather has the copperheads active. Caught three snakes tonight, none from traps. They'd feel the vibrations of me walking up and freeze, but their camo was useless. The pattern is easy to pick out, for me at least.

2 little juveniles and one good sized adult. Pics tomorrow.
