Usually the yellowtail is a dead giveaway but I can't tell if he has one or not.

Question for the board: Is it ok to kill venomous snakes? Don't attack me, I used to kill all snakes but I'm learning from this board and do not do that anymore. Keep in mind, I have a toddler son.

I have kids, so I really don't care what anyone has to say. If there's a poisonous snake on my property where my kids play, it's dying.

If it's on the back half by the barn, I'll leave it be

I am of the opinion that if the venomous snakes are in a yard that has small children or in close proximity to a child or pet it is o.k. Otherwise, let them alone and they won't mess with you. Small children and pets are unable to let anything alone so sometimes the snake has to die.

I wouldn't hesitate to kill one if it I found it in our backyard since we have three kiddos.

I don't think any rational person would blame anyone for killing a venomous snake with small children.

Not something I'd personally do (I'd relocate them).

I can't relocate a grass snake, I just shoosh them away now.

Brooms and square trash cans are great for this.

I'm not scared of spiders, scorpions, the dark, ghosts, etc. Snakes cause a visceral reaction in me. My wife had to pick up a snake and move it to a field. She laughed, I'm a *****.

Eh, it's ok. I'm the same with flying roaches. And I usually like most creepy crawlers.

My kids were actually pretty close to the copperhead in the "let's play find the snake" post from above and it slithered away unscathed. I figured I was on his turf and he had a pretty good exit path.

The cement fragments in the pic are the ones it slithered off into and the bench is at.the base of the same tree it was found under.

I thought the yellow tail giveaway was for the juvenile copperhead?

edit...research shows yellow tail on both.

Yep, they both have the yellow tail as a young juvenile. They lose it as an older juvenile often before cottonmouths get adult coloration.

Just saw a gorgeous speckled king snake in the yard but took my eye off him for a minute to grab a stick to ease him out from under the kids slide and I lost him in some leaves and grass.

Pissed because I wanted a picture of him and to give the kids an ID lesson.

Daaang. If I walked up on that snake, I'd think he was a venomous life stealer!!! Pretty, but scary!!!

Wow... rare to see one of those things on dry land. Apparently I need to visit Mandeville so I can check off some more species from my life list.

Edit: just saw you pulled it out of a ditch. Makes more sense. Still awesome though.

Same. I own tarantulas and used to have scorpions but I will come un****ingglued if a flying cockroach gets near me.

This place is rotten with snakes! I really don't see that many venomous snakes though. Water snakes are everywhere. We see quite a few Mississippi greens when we kayak the bayous. This mud snake almost got weed whacked. I try to weed the ditch carefully, but occasionally hit a snake or legless lizard. The mud snakes are very docile and just lay quietly and still. Here we're returning him to his lair. My daughter goes to Fountainebleu.

Not a phobia but I give a very healthy respect and lots of room to wasps. They can be nasty suckers

I know it goes against the spirit of this thread (which I have happily adopted) but having a young son who has been swarmed by yellow jackets, all wasps and flying stinging creatures die around here
