It doesn't look like a coachwhip to me... but without more pics I'm not entirely sure. I would say it is a youngish racer transitioning from juvenile to adult coloration.

However, i'm sure 12f can count scales and give you a definitive answer...

That would be my guess. 12fmane knows a lot more about distribution maps and known ranges, but that's a little east for a Diamondback.

No... I reviewed pics of the short snouted whip snake and that is not the same animal. The whip snake has ridges above the eyes that this snake lacks.

Really need location for a positive ID. 12f probably won't, but he's MIA today.

I wouldn't consider this being stumped... first, this thread is generally for snakes people actually run across in the US and I haven't seen him wrong on anyone of those. Second, this is a partial picture of the head and provides zero info on the location (not hemisphere, continent, country, etc.).

So cheer up 12fmane! You missed one question (which was a BS one) out of several hundreds.

It has too long a head to be a skaapsteker and it's nose isn't rounded off. How is it that no one on the facebook page knows where this pic was obtained. 12f is having trouble because it is a very generic looking snake and we are going off of a slightly blurry head pic.

Everyone is just guessing Africa right now, but that snake could easily be from anywhere. If we had a location, we could probably get an ID in no time flat.
