Email from our HSE team:

Snake Safety
  • Watch where you place your hands and feet when removing any material from the ground. If possible, don't place your fingers under debris you are moving. Wear heavy gloves.
  • If you see a snake, step back and allow it to proceed.
  • Watch for snakes sunning on boards, pipes, etc.
  • A snake's striking distance is about 1/2 the total length of the snake.
  • If bitten, note the color and shape of the snake's head to help with treatment.
  • If bitten, keep still and calm to slow the spread of venom in case the snake is poisonous, contact the site fire fighter on the fire fighter duty phone.
Alligators
  • Keep a safety distance from all alligators that may be spotted onsite and contact your supervisor and HSE.
Additionally:
  • Do not feed alligators.
  • Keep your distance.
  • Do not attempt to move an alligator.
  • Do not corner an alligator.

Been a dry year so far snake sighting for me in the Memphis area. I usually see a good amount out bank fishing the local lakes/ponds and walking some of the back trails. But only spotted a couple water snakes so far. By this time last year, I had seen several moccasins, a couple copperheads, a speckled king snake and loads of water snakes. This year, nada.

It's a black rat snake. They are common around here as well, but more black/brown.

Strangely quiet at my place. Night temps in the 60's have them more active during the day, but they stay under heavy cover instead of braving the open like they do at night.

You got a problem with TEXAS, rat snake?

I figured it was some kind of water snake or a racer. That dark coloration is different than the rat snakes we've seen here.

I've seen the dark phase rat snakes mostly on North and East Texas. Like I said, they are common here in East Tenn, although we also have corn snakes too.

Seems like those black ones were all over NE Texas while I was growing up. Mom called them chicken snakes due to regularly finding them in barns/coops.

Yep, another common coloquial name of rat snakes. They are great climbers, and love them some bird eggs and birds as well.

At one of the zoos I worked at, had a 5 footer that was consuming starlings until one of our hornbills got ahold of him (like a toucan - sharp beak) - luckily, we stitched him back up, and sent him on his way a couple of weeks later.

Husband killed another copperhead yesterday (he killed 32" one Saturday). Both were in the same area of the pasture/tree line about 250 yards behind the house.

The 5-year old and I were outside this morning and saw 3 different snakes in 15 minutes (2 water snakes in the pond and an Eastern Black Kingsnake in the chicken coop).

I was working in the garden and the boy was running around playing. All of a sudden he screams and comes running! He found the snake in the chicken coop.

I grabbed the snake's tail and made him mad. He puffed up , struck at me and "rattled" his tail. I explained to my boy why he needs to leave snakes alone. I don't think we'll have an issue for a while!

Working in the North Fork Wichita River near Paducah yesterday and my next step would have been on this guy. I backed away and walked around him. Just noticed the lump after I downloaded from camera today. It never rattled.

That was what I thought. Although in the swim area, I talked the in-laws into letting it live.

A buddy's dog found this guy in Florence, TX (Central Texas). Is this a coral or possibly a corn snake? He said it was about 3 foot long. Seems too long for a coral.

The lump in the snake or the one in your shorts?
