I can pretty consistently find a copperhead or two without even looking hard, and often other species. Wait until I get a few chickens, and start getting overrun by rat snakes.

South Africa. Sorry about the pics and my poor computer skills. I was there on a trip with my Dad. These little snakes are so shy, and the guides are loathe to chase them down for you and get them to pose for pics.

I saw this little guy on the road and pointed him out to the driver. He was standing up quite tall. We sped up to check him out, but again he was quite shy and slithered up the tree. And yet again, the guide would not get out of the jeep and get him out of the tree so we could play with him (or her).

First one looks like a gaboon or rhino viper.

Yes, the second one was a black mamba. He was huge, definitely over 10 feet in length. From Kirkman's Camp on the private side of Kruger. As was the unfortunate guy who became lunch (no idea what that snake is).

That would be my guess but I know next to nothing about African venomous species. Rhino has the "rhino" nose and gaboon has more yellow, I think.
I know puff adders are really common in South Africa and after checking range maps (I thought I remembered this right and the maps say I do) the Gabboon and Rhino Vipers ranges are much further north and don't get down into S Africa.
Yeah, I thought both of those were more jungle species.

Raising or keeping venomous snakes is way more common than you think. At least in my sphere of people (course, I worked at 5 different zoos and aquariums).
Not something I'd ever do. I used to have around 50 snakes, but I only have 1 Eastern Hognose, 1 western Hognose, and 2 corn snakes from Florida.

A young man in Temple had a pet cobra. He committed suicide by snake a couple of years ago.
I think my biggest accomplishments in keeping snakes has been getting an Eastern Hognose to eat mice (not an easy thing to do) and having to feed a baby Mexican Hognose a mixture of baby food and reptical (reptile vitamins) because it refused food for 6 months. I kept it alive until it finally began to eat 2 years later.
Puff adder is what the guide told us, yes. It's amazing how different those two snakes look, even being of the same species. Just like people. 
I really regret that I couldn't get a better picture of the mamba, especially when he was standing up. Shy little creatures, aren't they?

Not surprIsng. Again, not something I'd personally do; most of the people I know have been working with venomous 30+ years and generally aren't stupid when it comes to handling.
There are, however, the stupid people. They think they are badasses, and will do unwise things like picking up theirs venomous snakes with their hands, etc.
I can't imagine how dying from Cobra venom would feel.

Yes, members of the same snake species can look radically different. I've personally seen Eastern Hogs in maroon (entire body), Black, albino, orange, and red....... not even accounting for the normal variations of these colors with background patterns.
I should have kept the maroon one, though.

They're in South Africa which averages mid 40s up to mid 60s during the winter. Seems like they could handle Houston winters which aren't much different.
