My son almost stepped on this on the golf course yesterday. ID?

Edit - Not sure why image isn't showing up. I've posted pictures before but it's been awhile.

Edit 2 - Realized what I was doing wrong.

Black racer looking through the window this afternoon. Sorry for the blur. Cell phone zoom was a bad camera option.

Edit: location is Fort Myers, FL

Cool. Captured a copperhead and rat snake tonight while patrolling the front yard. Will post pics later.

Man that guy is really channeling some cottonmouth pretty hard. I don't know if I could even fault someone for icing it if they thought it was one.

He's pushing those ribs out hard and flattening that head like a mofo. If he could speak, he would likely be saying "come at me bro".

Quote:

An Oklahoma man was out celebrating his 57th birthday when he came across a rattlesnake on a road and attempted to move it, but was bitten twice and died.

Barry Lester was driving in his pickup truck with his relatives on their way to Walnut Creek on Sunday when he spotted the timber rattlesnake in the middle of the road in Osage County.

Lester pulled over, approached the venomous reptile and grabbed it behind its head, as he had done many times before over the years.

Quote:

The 57-year-old man was a former rodeo calf roper who had experience catching snakes and setting them loose near his property to help control rodent populations, reported Tulsa World.

This time, the young adult snake measuring 42 inches in length twisted its head and plunged its fangs into Lester's left hand.

The man transferred the snake into his right hand, and the critter bit him a second time, according to his widow.

Lester dumped the snake into an empty toolbox in the bed of his pickup truck and was rushed home to meet an ambulance his family had summoned.

Lester was taken to St John Medical Center but passed away a short time later.

Doctors told his widow that Lester died as a result of the rattlesnake bites exacerbated by his pre-existing heart condition.

That was my guess. And yes, the only defense I've got for them is they're pretty old? Bad eyes maybe?

If I have to move a venomous snake off the road, I just used a pair of tongs or hook I keep in the back of my truck

I'd never think of handling a venomous snake with my hands at all.

It's Osage County; I've got loads of relatives in and out that whole area and south of there. That's just what some people do around there. If you question a behavior that seems, well, dangerous, the stock answer is along the lines of "I've been doing this my whole life and never got hurt before..." I've learned to bite my tongue and get out the way.

So my boss killed a snake. Have been told that the image makes the snake appear larger. What is the consensus on ID?

Final count tonight was 1 adult copperhead, 2 juvenile copperheads, 1 2-foot long hognose, and 1 Texas brown snake.

A One-night record.

Yeah, I don't doubt it. I kinda got that vibe. But still, I would be changing my drawers and my pants if that rascal crawled up in my lap like that. Or really, anywhere near my body with me sitting on the ground.

One of my aunts had a close encounter with a large rattler about 20 years ago. She and my uncle were living in Waco and had bought a place on the Brazos near China Spring. It's about 20 acres with a small cabin on it. They worked on weekends clearing enough land for a new home pad site plus areas for lawn and garden, barn type building, etc. They were working one weekend in late spring after a cool front had come through. My aunt was tired and decided to take a nap on a cot inside the cabin. She laid on the cot and covered up with a blanket and promptly fell asleep. When she awoke, she immediately had an eery feeling that something wasn't right. After a few seconds, she felt something moving under the blanket and realized it was a snake. I guess it crawled up there to get warm. She couldn't see it so she just froze and waited. I don't remember how long she had to lay there like that but eventually, my uncle came in to check on her. She quietly told him what was going on and he tried to figure out how to get her out of the situation. He likes to smoke a cigar now and then and just happened to have some in the cabin. He decided to try and smoke out the snake. He lit up a stogie and then lifted up the blanket near her face just enough to blow smoke under it. After a few puffs, the snake crawled out from under the blanket on the foot end of the cot. Once he was away from her, my aunt made her exit and Uncle Herb took care of the snake with a shovel.

If that had happened to my wife, she would now be dead. She would have instantly panicked and tried to get out of the cot, thereby causing the snake to strike. But that wouldn't be what killed her because she would have died from a heart attack once she saw what it was.

Was the snake somehow not dangerous? Fangs removed? Is that even possible?
