thats what I was thinking as well, let it scurry off instead of mowing it over. maybe it will keep getting the mice and such so the damn neighborhood cats will stop screwing around in my yard.

Schertz, TX

First pic - Couldn't get a good pic, but this was actually about 4 or 5 snakes all together near the golf course pond behind my house. Diamondback Water Snakes I believe (I know not Cottonmouths! LOL).

Second pic - Almost stepped on the little guy sitting in the yard when i went to fill the bird feeder. Checkered Garter.

First capture of 2018 was a monster. This snake was in one of my traps. She (I assume) was BIG for a copperhead in these parts, something around 1.5" across, maybe closer to 2, and well over 2 feet.

Fat snake. You are feeding them a healthy diet.

Good looking copperhead! Likely migrated back to the safety of your habitat from last year

Properly assembled and placed along base of structure walls or fence lines.

Found #2 in the yard. Almost as big, but FAR more bitey. Must have struck at my snake stick 30 times, and bluffed at me any time I leaned in closer for a look.

And we're talking on a roll. #3 found this evening in front of the house. I'm really appreciating my snake stick now. So easy: grab and go.

I can tell you what he DOESNT do, even though he's been begged: he doesn't mark them with adorable little faux Mohawks.

Couple recents.

Found this cottonmouth going for a float.

And a couple speckled kingsnakes. First from Dallas area, second Houston area.

Ok, fine. I'll get a paint pen and start ID'ing them. It'll only last until they shed.

I banish them to the fence line with the neighbor's pasture a good distance from the house. It's a good 250 yards away, which is why I am curious if any find their way back.

I live in Paige, which is Post Oak prairie, prime copperhead habitat.

Simple solution. Tag their ears!

Not to derail, but curious if you know Rody and Kristen Best at Best Retrievers there in Paige. We got our pup from them and they are awesome trainers and people!

I assume that your neighbor is in on this AND HIS home is also well away . 250 yards isn't much for a hungry little critter to slither.

My "neighbor" is 40 acres of pasture with a few longhorn cattle on it. I think he lives in Pflugerville.

Haven't met them yet, but I imagine we both eat at the Roadhouse now and then so I may have seen them. I think they're on the north side of town near the Whoopstop.

Found a small copperhead looking flat and upside down. I couldn't find any evidence of injury and no movement when I moved him to a bench for friends to observe.

Could the cold front drop in temps make him totally dormant? If dead, I can't figure out why.

He was about 15 yards from a garage.

Sure it wasn't a hognose?

Behavior above tells me it was probably a hognose.

Gulf Coast Ribbon Snake. I was taking advantage of the cool weather yesterday to move some plants around and almost chopped this little guy in half before seeing him but just missed with the shovel. He was nestled under some leaves at the base of a large azalea. About 17-18" long. SE Montogomery County

Wow, that's a nice website! Lots of varieties of snakes in California, lots of pictures of each type for those that I clicked on.

Can't figure out how to post a pic but it's definitely a copperhead with the typical markings.
